Two of the league’s in-form teams duke it out at the MCG, as the Geelong Cats take on the Essendon Bombers. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 3:20pm AEST.

After a slow start to 2019, Essendon have caught fire. A four-point margin against last year’s Grand Finallists was all that separated them from four consecutive wins.

But they get another chance to take a big scalp this week, up against the ladder-leading Cats.

Geelong would have surely preferred to have played this game at their traditional home at Kardinia Park, but they can take no small amount of confidence from their unbeaten record this season at the MCG – two from two.

Even more than that, they have been hugely impressive in most of their contests this year, no more so than last week in their dominant win over the reigning premiers.

Patrick Dangerfield, Gary Ablett and Mitch Duncan are all consistently putting out high-quality games, while the likes of Gary Rohan, Gryan Miers and Rhys Stanley have been more unexpected contributors.

However, the ‘home’ team have been somewhat weakened by the absence through injury of Joel Selwood and the impressive youngster Charlie Constable, replaced by Brandan Parfitt and Jordan Clark.

The Bombers lose Mitch Brown along with the omitted David Myers, but welcome back Aaron Francis and more importantly the dangerous Orazio Fantasia.

Fantasia adds to what is becoming an impressive forward line, with Joe Daniher, Jake Stringer and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti all finding form.

It’s in the centre of the ground where the problems might be for Essendon. While they’re getting the ball readily enough, the quality of disposal hasn’t been the best this season. New recruit Dylan Shiel has been particularly under the microscope in this regard.

Prediction
While it would be tempting to forget Essendon’s start to the season and back them to come out firing after last week’s close loss, the reality is that Geelong’s form has been better and more sustained.

Plus the Cats’ midfield appears a level ahead of the Bombers at the moment.

Geelong by 10 points.
