Hawthorn hosts Essendon at the MCG in Sunday afternoon AFL action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEDT).

Round 1 has thrown up a draw, plenty of surprises and some seriously entertaining football to start the 2023 season. The Hawks and Dons will look to add to what has been a brilliant opening weekend, as they re-ignite one of the fiercest historical rivalries in the competition.

Both would like to be entering the season as serious contenders for the flag, yet that is difficult to imagine considering the rebuild that both have undertaken in recent seasons.

After showing some promise in 2021, Essendon were unconvincing last season and went back to the drawing board after a 15th-placed finish and just seven wins. Hawthorn, despite moments of real quality and a growing view that Sam Mitchell does have the squad heading in the right direction in terms of personnel and playing style, did little better, finishing four wins outside of the top eight and unable to close out games in which they appeared to be in a position to triumph.

That recent form sees two teams with great history and success now determined to stop the rot and move into a new era of glory. The winner today will have made the perfect start to that quest.

Team news sees the Hawks select four new players on the list: Cam Mackenzie, Lloyd Meek, Fergus Greene and Karl Amon will all make their debuts for the club, while Mitchell has omitted Jack Scrimshaw and Connor Nash, despite their contributions in 2022.

Peter Wright is unavailable for the Dons, with Harry Jones and Sam Weideman set to take the responsibility up forward. Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti could make his long-awaited return to AFL football as the sub, and the centre-line three of Dyson Heppell, Will Setterfield and Dylan Shiel will be determined to begin the season in dominant fashion.

If a Round 1 match ever loomed as a brutal and spiteful contest, this is the one. The long history between the two clubs will see both determined to begin the season with a win against one of the teams they will feel confident of matching in 2023.

In order to scrape into the eight, Hawthorn and Essendon will need to be near perfect against the teams around and below them and a loss in the opening round will reopen recent wounds that their supporters would have been hoping were not to be.

It looks like a Hawks win to me and a more promising season ahead for them than the likely mediocrity the Bombers will experience for a second year running.
