The Hawthorn Hawks and the Melbourne Demons meet at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to determine which club wil earn a spot in a Preliminary Final. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEST).

There are no second prizes or chances from this point on in the AFL race for 2018. The time to put up or shut up has come and it presents an interesting scenario for both clubs in action tonight.

After twelve years in finals’ wilderness, the Demons come in with significant momentum after a resounding win against the Cats and a growing feeling in the football community that this team could pose a real threat to the Tigers.

Hawthorn were humbled by Richmond last weekend after competing well for much of the first and second quarters; only to see the famous Tiger pressure take the match away from them the longer the contest went.

It looks set up as a battle between the outstanding speed and aggression of the Melbourne midfielders; desperate to win the tight ball in the clinches and overrun the Hawks, and Hawthorn’s more structured and poised use of the ball on the outside.

If the Demons do dominate through the centre, the Hawks will be no match and they must be prepared to put their head over the ball from the first bounce, if they are to have any chance against the ramaging Melbourne.

The loss of Jaeger O’Meara is significant for the Hawks. Tom Mitchell has lost his right-hand man in the centre of the field and alone, the Demons may be able to negate the Brownlow Medal favourite.

Melbourne’s weather has certainly come to the party with a balmy 22-degree day that should see a firm and fast track at the home of football. That is just what the Demons want and the speed of the game in their favour could be the determining factor.

Prediction
Personally, I think this will be a walk in the park for the Demons. Alastair Clarkson isn’t a miracle worker and the Dees are in top form, rolling and match up well against the Hawks across the field.

Hawthorn will have their moments but the Demons will eventually get on top and convert pressure and manic ball movement into a convincing victory.

Demons by 32 points.
