Footy returns to the top end as Port Adelaide take on a Clayton Oliver-less Melbourne knowing that nothing short of a win can keep their finals hopes alive. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 3:20pm (AEST).

2021 flag winners Melbourne head north to TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs, looking to shake off the poor form that has seem them lose four of their last six matches and thus release the stranglehold they appeared to have a top two position.

Recent form has been far from what we have expected from the Dees and up against a desperate and worthy opponent today in the steamy conditions likely up north, this will be yet another test they must pass should people begin to believe in them again as the number one seed heading into September action.

Port will be without coach Ken Hinkley for the trip due to health and safety protocols, yet enter the fixture with three wins from their last four and are still hanging on to hopes of an appearance in the finals this season.

Today could be something of a last chance, with a loss making the run home one where perfection may be required if they are to sneak into eighth spot on the ladder.

Team news sees the nominal home side enter the match with a strong 22 and the loss of Clayton Oliver the most significant. Port Adelaide will be playing with pretty much a full deck, with the midfield stars they possess all available and recent form suggesting that a win against Melbourne is definitely possible.

Prediction

Weather could be key in Alice Springs for this fixture, with humidity and a somewhat slippery ball possible should the conditions prove similar to past matches held at Traeger Park.

The key for Melbourne is always rediscovering the chaotic intensity that marked their 2021 season. When it appears, they are near impossible to beat; when it is absent, they are more than gettable. Port produced similar effort against Sydney a few weeks back and will need to bring more of the same should they be able to topple the champs today and potentially move closer to securing a top eight spot.

Melbourne by 21 points.
