Broad has pretty much become the modern version of McGrath.

That is my chuckle for the week. Broad can perform on home tracks but not same on tracks abroad. His best figures in Australia are 6-91 @34, India an embarrassing @61 while McGraths best in England is 8-34 @19.4, India @21 They both have similar Test wickets but Broad’s have come from almost 40 more matches. There is also more than 6 points difference in career averages. Broad doesnt walk in McGraths shadow.

Broadside: Stuart’s playing bizarre mind games with Aussies claiming last Ashes didn’t count - ‘a void series’

I do. Being formally acknowledged as the premier Test playing nation is a huge deal imho. The one off match will give us a chance to wage some revenge against those Indians.

Ashes squad announced: Marsh gets surprise recall, Warner avoids axe but two openers picked as cover, Morris out

Think we are missing the point here. CA regards runs on English tracks as a priority when selecting Ashes squads…period.

“Div 2 county cricket… is about the same standard as Sydney, Melbourne and Perth first grade”
More resembling our Second X1 I’d say. Means the top Division Two sides are knocking on the door of a level similar to our Shield and due to the County promotion and relegation system are rewarded for good form by promotion to Division One..

Tele scribe got the wrond end of the pineapple as now they are saying that Warner will only be given the WTC final to prove he deserves an Ashes crack.

Neser is the bridesmaid of Australian cricket. Still a chance for him to come in at some stage given he is in England already and there are six Tests in all.

No sorry to say, as they have already penciled him in for the first two Ashes Tests too according to the Tele.

Aaron Hardie had my vote as a Green back up. CA has gone back to the past in a bewildering decision on Marsh. Only possible reason has to be his white ball record if the ECB prepares bazball decks.

A good call. CA took a look at each of their County records and Renshaw wins by a country mile. Harris over Bancroft for the same reason.

but the last 2 weeks they’ve lost on goal-kicking.</em. ———–
Now now cant blame Lomax goal kicking for those losses. Last week Dragons went to sleep with the game all but won when they failed to gather the short kick off, while again yesterday they clocked off early allowing Hudson Young to run most of the field to score the winner, whether or not the ref ruled correctly.

Good article Paul. Like you, I believe this ECB/Stokes conjured ‘bazball’ track policy could well backfire, for the reasons you have outlined. I dont agree that Warner should be kept alive to simply bludgeon the Pom quicks as we have other, more consistent batsmen that can do that now. Travis Head, Marnus Labuchagne, Cameron Green, Alex Carey all have an effective second gear to attack the bowling while Steven Smith plays the anchor.

Ben stokes Ashes flames with pacy pitch talk but Bazball wickets could backfire by suiting Australia

He’d certainly be able to bring some structure to our attack, being a bloody good one himself. Be a good boost to Junior Amone who shows promise as a play maker.

To be fair the others were in the line waiting on the pill from Musgrove. Only the ref and Hudson Young reckoned he had not been sufficiently held.

Why isn’t Ben Woolf being mentioned in the discussion. Coached in England I believe and with some success, or was that his brother?

Would help his game no end if someone would give him clean ball in space. Every time he gets the leather he has two/three players to beat. Agree his goal kicking has fallen off a cliff this season. Reflects how badly the team is traveling.

Is it. The prime job of a head coach is to instil confidence in his players to bring out the best in them. Griffin does not do that.

We are on the same page on bowling too Pierro, mostly anyway. As we will be having an extended squad to cover six Tests they will pick a few bowlers that otherwise may have been better off debuting next summer as you say. I have added Johnson as a like for like lefty to Starc who like all the quicks will be rotated as some stage. Will CA think the same way as I on Johnson?
Lineup: Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc, Green, Morris, Boland Neser/Johnson, Lyon, Murphy. The skipper, Hazlewood, Green and Boland will be the ideal attack if we have a typical green moist Pommie deck while the added speed of Morris, Starc and Johnson will be for the fast flat tracks Stokes wants. Neser can fit into both categories, but doubt he will get any more than a single match.

Timing is everything: Renshaw mounts late Ashes bid as pressure mounts on selectors to make call on Warner

We sure do have better options, Hasler or Flanagan. Or say, someone that bleeds red and white like Jason Ryles, Dean Young or Nathan Brown for instance.

Can not agree with that. Be nice to a coach that plays favorites with players that he coached back in the Broncos junior setup, is a poor mentor to our juniors, ignores his assistants. Need I go on.

Sounds like us and Anthony Griffin, arguably the Dragons worst ever coach.

Sloan oozes skill. Imagine how he’d go in a team with a good attacking structure and a go ahead pack. He and Zac Lomax.

Agree. He was treated shabbily by his coach last year. Still a kid then, he needed to be encouraged.

We are on the same page Pierro. Yes Warner, Harris, Khawaja all had shockers in 2019, with Head at least posting a 50. Reckon tho, Ussie has been the biggest improver on all surfaces since and will take his chances this time, regardless of the type of track. I like Ussie/Renshaw, Marnus, Smith, Green, Head if the ECB is bluffing about their ‘bazball’ decks. If not Marnus and Head to open with Ussie and Renners down the order. With the World Test Champs final also to be played prior to the Ashes, CA will cover all bases by picking an extended batting and bowling attack. So who do you have in the full squad other than Handscomb, Harris and Bancroft all of whom will be considered specially if they can pile on county runs in the next two months. As for the attack I’d like to see Spencer Johnson added to the squad after all CA has already fast tracked him so they rate him. I think express man and the standing Bradman Young Cricketer, Lance Morris will be in the squad too.

I think the Ashes landscape has changed with the bombshell by Ben Stokes that we wants all five Ashes tracks made for his so called ‘bazball’. Personally this is a corruption of Test cricket but then again I am a purist, growing up only with Test cricket until Packer’s World Series Cricket came along. I digress.

CA will now want to pick an Ashes squad with a view to countering ‘bazball’, so I dont see time batters opening, rather hitters to take an early shine off the Dukes to make it easier for our middle order. If the case then we may stick with Warner at opener as the little slugger has built a career reputation of not hanging around when there are runs to be scored. I now see Travis head as his partner who has turned his moderate Test career on its head with his aggressive approach.

Australia may have already lost Ashes if they stick with Warner as Renshaw, Harris hit tons to turn up heat on veteran

Yes in Australian domestic cricket. We are talking about Test cricket in England. Chalk and cheese.
