Suspect it’s survivorship bias. The old ones still kicking around are the ones who haven’t had a lot of injuries.

Sam Talakai? Jake Gordon? Dylan Pietsch? This must be a wind up.

I disagree with you about both those calls. The Creighton high tackle, he was actually going for the ball on the bounce, and it turned into a tackle when the crusader beat him there. Foul play? -actually doubtful, could easily have been ruled accidental contact. High degree of danger? – no, minimal head contact. Mitigation? – yes, awkward bounce and no time to readjust. Therefore penalty only, if that. Team warning – the referee has a lot of discretion here, and it’s fairly common to ‘reset’ the warning if significant time has elapsed

There’s an insolvent trading claim against the directors personally for around $16m that could cover most of the debt. It’s the reason why ATO and RA voted against the DOCA

Historical viability and success. Last in, first out. Pragmatism. Save the mothership.

Is any of this conjecture actually relevant though? The Rebels aren’t a franchise or a business of RA. They are a private company that holds a licence to participate in a competition that RA is involved in administering, through SANZAAR. It seems the Rebels did not produce reports and probably did not have their accounts audited. They also failed to make solvency declarations which apparently were a requirement under the licence conditions. No doubt someone like Andy Marinos would have been very concerned by this, and would have tried to find out what was going on. But if the Rebels current attitude is anything to go by, they probably told RA to rack off and mind their own business. Distressed businesses are not generally known for their openness and transparency. RA seemed genuinely shocked by the Rebels’ financial situation when everything unfolded at the start of the year. So I think the assumptions being made about what RA “must have known”, or RA having some “moral” responsibility for the serious financial mismanagement that clearly occurred at the Rebels, have a tenuous relationship to the facts. The most that could be said is that RA probably could have exercised its rights to terminate the Rebels’ licence earlier. But how would that have gone down with the same people who are now demanding that the Rebels be saved in the face of all financial logic?

Rebels are doing great this year (comparative to their typical ladder position) and the crowds are nowhere to be seen

“preposterous” -contrary to reason or common sense; utterly absurd or ridiculous. It’s preposterous to suggest that cutting the Rebels is preposterous. What is actually preposterous is the idea that RA, an entity that itself would be insolvent but for an $80m loan, should save a club that has been insolvent for at least 5 years, with no viable business model, that will require an additional support package of $5m per year, every year just to stay afloat

Trying to present it as the Rebels or the death of Victorian rugby is manipulative.

We just need to accelerate our existing plan – sign Kiwis who are eligible on residency. Half the country lives here anyway.
The insurmountable problem facing Australian rugby in a doomed rivalry with New Zealand
Yes the time before lineouts is an even bigger bugbear for me. The period from penalty being awarded to the lineout being thrown in should be a continuous period of players actually doing stuff. Kicker lines up and kicks, players go straight into the lineout, make the call, throw. The milling around, huddling, hanging back, talking to the backs is absolutely maddening.

I don’t think you’ve actually made a point though. Players will respect someone being paid more than them if they can see the other person is better than them at rugby. It doesn’t have anything to do with them being an NRL player or not. And in fact signing an NRL convert on big dollars is more likely to mean that the player is overpaid relative to their rugby ability, because that ability hasn’t been tested, so they are being paid on an educated guess about their ability.

RA is dead broke. They need to let some other country’s club system pay his salary and take the benefit come wallabies time. That’s what SA do and they are laughing all the way to 4 world cups

The reds are already carrying too many 10s in the squad and they need to focus recruitment on front row and probably the centres. If CG wants 700k then he needs to go overseas

RA don’t have the money to top up every player with potential. If we want to keep all these players in the game, they need to be allowed to earn euros, pounds or yen and still be wallabies eligible.

It would be preferable that he go to Japan or France. RA have to wake up the reality that they need to pick overseas players for the Wallabies. They are broke and don’t have a large enough pool of experienced players to be competitive. Letting players go overseas when their salary expectations are excessive helps both those issues.

Yes I have it on good authority that the Crusaders are planning to start Owen Franks on Ryan’s wing next week because they watched the match tape and identified that Ryan lacks pace. Meanwhile Nick Frost’s contract has been terminated because he isn’t tall enough to play second row and the Reds have given Fraser McReight one final chance to up his work rate.

Schmidt is not silly enough to think that the past predicts the future or to blindly copy another country’s style. Having said that I agree that without a Nonu or Aki type 12, Schmidt may be more inclined to pick a bigger 13 over Flook

Reds don’t even play at Ballymore so what’s your point? It’s not like owning Marvel Stadium. They still cop hire fees for Suncorp and pay for O&M of Ballymore. For many years Ballymore was actually a financial noose around their necks from the upkeep costs and no real revenue. Qld is now in a good spot because they have been building engagement from the grassroots up to super and exercised financial restraint, particularly around recruitment. And yes the investment in Ballymore from the govt helped too.
