Agree with you that RBB has had problems in years gone by but they seem to have been relatively trouble free in last 2 or 3 seasons which is why the walkout surprised me. But as I also say above I don’t know what happened and nobody seems to really know what happened so its hard to land on a position re who may be at fault etc.
When you say “some in the active supporters ARE trying to replicate the bad parts of active support” what actual actions do you mean?

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

I saw first hand the RBB walkout on sat night, but what caused the walkout last night in Brisbane?
I’ve historically thought the RBB had a bit of a victim mentality and not taking responsibility for own actions- but in recent couple of seasons they seem to have been pretty good so it was a surprise (and disappointing) when the walkout occurred on sat night.
It still seems to be very muddy as to what happened. I’ve heard police stopped and refused entry to about 20 or 30 RBB members who were bringing back the tifo – if so that’s nanny state over policing and unnecessary. I also heard the walkout was due to one “senior leader” being removed and/or arrested. If so that’s a bit of an over reaction on rbb part even if that ejection was warranted/unwarranted.
Anyway – Rudan might be the only one pleased with the walkout because it deflects attention from his team’s abomination of a performance.

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

Rudan is a poor poor man’s Mourinho with chips on both of his shoulders. For a guy who says he will take blame for last night he sure seemed to spend a lot of time talking about players lack of effort….
The wanderers performance was one of the worst I’ve seen from any a-league team in recent years.

'I take full responsibility': Rudan can't blame refs this time after Wanderers embarrassed in derby demolition

First ten minutes was sublime to the ridiculous.

Two goals in a blistering 6-7 minute period was heaven for us Sydney FC fans.

Then on about 10 mins the ridiculous of the RBB walking out. Both sides will no doubt point fingers at each other (with the truth probably somewhere in between) but there was a bit of a weird vibe in the stadium.

Ufuk Talay is fast creating a few man-crushes in the Sydney fanbase with his results and performances.

Ruthless performance in first half with no mercy shown. Great to see. Haven’t seen anything of the tie but interesting to see Japan only winning by 2-1 over two legs against North Korea.

With only 12 teams in the tournament, getting a medal is not out of the question. That would be an amazing legacy on the field to go with everything they’ve done off the field in so capturing the Australian public’s attention.

I think there was vision to support there may have been contact (albeit minimal). That said, it wasn’t clear and obvious (ie definitive) to warrant such a decision – give the benefit of the doubt in that instance to the defender.
And as for statements on here of Kuol diving, I think the contact (assuming the contact occurred) was minimal but even if its minimal, it doesn’t take much for a player running full tilt to go crashing to the ground.

The Central Coast Mariners are a reminder of what's good about the A-League Men

Was out at Allianz on saturday – highly entertaining match with two fantastic goals. Sydney FC bias aside I think City were lucky to get the draw. Uffie is doing a very good job with a squad that he inherited – looking forward to seeing what he can do with players of his choosing. Most excited I’ve been as a Sydney fan for a long time. Great atmosphere as well from the 15,000 in attendance.

Yeah that was terrible. That he couldn’t on his left foot pass the ball into a virtually unguarded net reflects poorly on him.

The “clear and obvious” criteria of VAR seems to have been replaced with “grey and highly subjective”.

Not entirely related to this article, but how good is Adam Taggart going this season?

Great talent who has unfortunately been blighted by injuries. But when injury-free has shown what he can do.

Perth Glory's long-suffering fans deserve their change of fortune

“hes been very frugal so far on the playing group with catania ” – well it is 3rd division Italian football, so I wouldn’t expect there to be big Euros spent at that level…..

Perth Glory's long-suffering fans deserve their change of fortune

Sense a bit of resentment there TSS!

Can’t comment on the Adelaide links, but he’s done well with Catania since taking over – granted they aren’t looking like going up this season, but this is only their first season in Serie C after coming up from regional Serie D last year. Baby steps etc etc. The potential is there – a famous club that (like many others in Italy) fell into disrepair with financial mismanagement. They draw very good crowds for a third tier league – close to 20,000 for some games so the potential is definitely there and not sure if your ‘little old’ reference is entirely appropriate.

Holidayed in Sicily near Catania last October and went into Catania for a day. Saw a lot of Catania shirts on my walks.

Two questions:

1) Who was the club last year?
2) “no drugs, no alcohol, no ciminal/gang ties.” – how common are one or more of these vices in young players?

Actually one more question – how long is his contract?

How good were CCM on saturday? Outstanding.

Hope Phoenix get a big crowd for today’s match against CCM being a public holiday and all. Should be a cracking match.

Wanderers play victims again as Rudan launches childish, Trump-like conspiracy theories

Rudan is a (very) poor man’s version of Jose Mourinho.

Thanks – was a very poor tournament when you also factor in the loss to Iraq. I remember Tulio – Brazilian born and raised from memory which might explain why he is a bit more ‘colourful’ in his comments as opposed to other Japanese commentators.
I also heard about the criticism the Japanese GK got during the tournament, some of which apparently crossed over into racism given his mixed heritage.

@MikeTuckerman – thanks for reply and agree with you.

Somewhat related to us, do you know what the reaction has been like in Japan after they also conceded last minute goal to lose to Iran in defensive keystone cops fashion. I know you generally have an interest in what is going on in Japan. Much gnashing of teeth and wishing to remove he coach? I recall their coach had similar journey to Arnie in that he was derided prior to World Cup but they like us them had a successful tournament.

Slightly off topic, but sports betting has only just started in USA in last few years and the rate of abuse coming out in the USA towards athletes is insane. Combine this with a rabid gun culture, its only a matter of time before some poor athlete in the USA becomes a victim a la Escobar.

Are we a mature enough football nation to honestly discuss the Socceroos?

Wasn’t aware of that stuff you were talking about – ie the death threats. Disgraceful.

Good points and hard to disagree. I got excited for the Socceroos the other day about Ajdin Hrustic finally getting a new club. He’s barely played at club level in 2 years yet in my view he’s the type of player with technique, vision and creativity we missed at the Asian Cup because clearly our broader playing pool on display at this tournament didn’t show this.

Are we a mature enough football nation to honestly discuss the Socceroos?

I think there is a strong degree of truth in your last 2 paragraphs. That and a combination of whether or not some – not all – players really have the heart and desire to stick it out and make it now they can come back to the comforts of the A-League. Not dissing the A-League in any was as the onfield product is very stong, but I don’t think there is the ruthlessness in the A-League with management of players that exists in Europe.

Are we a mature enough football nation to honestly discuss the Socceroos?

Agree with what you write especially with our overal quality of player being at an all time low. There are some promising young guys coming through but they are still a few years away from being the finished product.

'Devastating', 'painful', 'punished': Socceroos OUT of Asian Cup after Miller's moments of madness

My point isn’t we were a minute away from qualifying. My point is that we were the better team in regulation time last night against an on paper superior team. Korea were largely ineffective – until it was gifted to them. Anyway it is what it is.

'Devastating', 'painful', 'punished': Socceroos OUT of Asian Cup after Miller's moments of madness

Strange quirk but I think last night is only the 3rd time we’ve played them competitively since joining Asia almost 20 years ago. And we still haven’t played Iran either. Japan though….

'Devastating', 'painful', 'punished': Socceroos OUT of Asian Cup after Miller's moments of madness

Separately I wish Korea and in particular Son Heung min the best and hope they win. A guy like Son who besides being an incredible player seems to be a pretty decent person too deserves to have a big title like this.

A Korea v Japan final could well be one for the ages.
