I hope this allows Essendon to move in step with most teams and adopt a clash/away guernseys.

The club won’t dissolve just because the players aren’t wearing black with a red sash.

I hope Richmond also adopt a clash guernsey because they’re fooling no one by adding a touch of yellow down the sides.

Essendon clash strip doesn't tear at tradition

Yeah its all theoretical. It’s just a good way to see how far the game has come in the northern states.

I predict that in 5 – 10 years the QLD and NSW/ACT zones will be twice as strong thanks to the NEAFL and academy systems of the Suns, Lions, Swans and Giants.

Dreaming up AFL State of Origin teams

ah thanks for the heads up, did not know Mohr was Taswegian. Thought he was from Melbourne, being a scorpions product, but hes originally from the isle. I would say he would be in for sure.

To further illustrate the gains made in QLD and NSW and to a lesser extent highlight the AFL’s continual ignorance of Tasmania I will post my Tasmanian State Squad.

How does it defeat the purpose?

Are you saying that WA would not select Nic Nat or Glass?

Dreaming up AFL State of Origin teams

Are you seriously claiming that 75% of Australians have Irish heritage ?

I agree that the sport does nothing for either code, its a waste of time and poor excuse for rep football.

Did anyone else read the article today in Adelaide Advertiser ?

Perhaps the A-League will lock in the current 10 teams but look to add an 8 team B-League in the future.

That would allow West Sydney, Canberra, W’Gong, Tassie, NQ Fury, Geelong, Darwin and Auckland to enter without the pressure of needing massive crowds, competing financially with the established A-League clubs and competing on-field with the established A-League clubs.

Derby culture strengthens the A-League's image

Sometimes a sensible and safe decision is the best decision.

I doubt that Newcastle would’ve attracted a massively high profile coach and due to the season already underway could not take the time to conduct a lengthy interview process.

Dutchy knows the city and the club very well, he will immediately command the respect of the players and the club can look forward to some stability after a horrible week prior to round 1.

But things could be worse at least Tinkler did not go for a Theodorakopolous and Jardel coach/marquee team.

Newcastle's superclub safety dance

Poor form on Sydneys behalf.

I have devised a little table reflecting how well each club is engaging their respective population base.

Using each cities 2009 population and dividing it by last seasons A-League crowd figures the following scores can be produced

population/crowd

Adelaide United —- 102.7
Brisbane Roar —- 215.7
Central Coast —- 39.1
Gold Coast —- 150.2
Melbourne Heart* —- 240.3
Melbourne Victory* —- 132.6
Newcastle Jets —- 64.1
Perth Glory —- 195.4
Sydney FC —- 562.07
Wellington —- 49.7

*Melbourne is divided by 2 as two teams share the same population base.

Belief in A-League will convey success

It’s a shame that the Mazda ARC died.

I feel the main reason that rugby is being held back in Australia is the lack of a Currie Cup, ITM Cup style domestic league.

If a feasible Australian domestic competition could be launched it would be great for rugby in Australia.

The ARC incurred losses of 4.7 million in its one and only season so I would imagine that the ARU would be skeptical about doing it again.

What's really holding rugby union back?

My word what a crazy idea.

As long as they don’t start tinkering with Test cricket I don’t really care.

I’d would like to see a game played in this format before I could pass any judgment.

At least this shows that people still care enough about cricket to want to change it and or preserve it’s hold over our summer.

Oh boy, 5ives cricket sounds a dumb idea to me

I agree with Rellum on this one.

Why cram them into one round when their could be a derby most weeks (AU v MV, MV v SFC, MV v MH, BR v GCU, CCM v NJ, SFC v CCM)

Roma v Lazio is the definition of a derby, it is a truly amazing experience.

Derby culture strengthens the A-League's image

cheers Ian. i totally agree

Let second tier rugby nations play Plate Final

I agree that Test cricket won’t die, but will fade unless something more is done by the ICC.

I like quadrennial compeitions, the timeframe only allows for most players to be involved in one or two over a career and only the very best will experience more.

I like your idea, engaging the younger cricketing nations is very important also. And allowing for T20 breaks so players can be paid is essential.

I recommend everyone reads this http://idlesummers.com/images/cricket/testchampionship.png

Zeppelins, cassette tapes and Test cricket

I’d like to think the A-League is behind the depth coming through the Socceroos in what is now becoming a post-‘Golden Generation’ era.

Lots of players coming into the national team that have come through our domestic competition.

And I can’t forget Holger Osieck for actually recognising the A-League, unlike some other previous coach.

A look at the steady rise of the Socceroos

Great piece, funny and factual.

‘The die-hards and their goats will always have an interest in the tournament’

So true.

Mumbai wins CLT20 but nobody cares

Hahaha I agree.

No club/fans would be happy with a player getting injured playing rep footy.

I could see Eddie McGuire bringing the petrol.

And on a side note, if this mythical competition were to take place i think Vic Country would win.

It's time to bring back AFL State of Origin

In my dream concept of State of Origin it would be played every 4 years as a ‘World Cup Carnival’.

I doubt that a quadrennial competition would detract from the corporate dollar that the AFL Clubs rely on.

It could also help the clubs by possibly generating more money from TV rights etc that would filter down to clubs.

It's time to bring back AFL State of Origin

@ The Cattery,

Would Vic Country v Vic Metro played at Kardinia Park be a borefest?

Pendlbury, Thomas, Maxwell, the Selwoods, Jonathon Brown, Gary Ablett, Bartel, Dal Santo, Scarlett all playing for the pride of the coutry Victoria against the city-slickers.

(I’m not being sarcastic I’m genuinely asking the question as I presume your a Cats fan)

It's time to bring back AFL State of Origin

Great summary, Tommy. I totally agree about the Jets.

I think it will be good for the A-League for Perth to be a force again.

I know it is early days but they dominated Adelaide United, a team many tip to be champion/premier.

The atmosphere at the Melb v Sydney game was awesome, both ends exchanging chants.

I brought a friend from Switzerland to the game and he said it felt like most stadiums in Europe, cept for the roof.

Domestic delight for A-League start

The term your after is fair weather fans.

People in Melbourne and Adelaide will turn up every week, regardless.

Adelaide United came bottom the season before last and still averaged 10k plus.

For a city of just 1 million that is admirable, Brisbane is twice the size and yet only average 12,748 over the last 6 seasons.

But no one is more guilty of this than Sydneysiders, 4.5 million people and an all-time average crowd of just 13,228 since 2005.

Domestic delight for A-League start

I would love to see State of Origin in a World Cup format every four years in Australia.

Played at the end of the season so the players will actually go hard.

Every State would need to be represented with the exception of NSW/ACT being the only compromise.

I would kind of like to see Vic split into Metro and Country as a united Victoria would dominate to a point where every other state would not be interested and WA and SA would not play any of their star players.

This would leave 8 teams, Vic Met, Vic Country, SA, WA, QLD, NT, Tas, NSW/ACT.

But having a divided Victoria undermines the intergrity of STATE of Origin.

Therefore there this is all just a pipe dream.

It's time to bring back AFL State of Origin

I’m a crows fan but I think the way Port has been treated by the VFL is disgusting. Established in 1870 and won 35 premierships and yet were forced to wear their all teal training guernsey against collingwood a few years ago.

AFL clubs choosing tradition in aesthetics
