Completely agree

Promotion of our drinking culture must be restricted

Personally I felt the media’s portrayal of the Australian celebrations was sensationalist and unnecessary. The focus on hangovers and the length of their celebrations really didn’t need to be maintained for public interest; they earned their right to celebrate and should have been able to do so without being harassed. However the comments of Warne were being broadcast to a global audience consisting of an extremely wide age demographic. That is the type of behaviour that should not be justified.

Never did I mention nor elude to a total ban on alcoholic advertisement, nor the fantastical notion that sport is a sacred practice. All I am demanding is that in light of the progress of government agencies, which you detailed in part 1, there still exists a damaging drinking culture and Sport should not be exacerbating it.

A 2011 government survey found that 40% of 12-17 year olds have had a full serve of alcohol, and from personal experience in recent years this accurately portrays a culture that is still thriving amongst those underage. Surely we shouldn’t be providing such a statistic with a platform to build upon?

Throughout the modern sports broadcast the sheer frequency of alcohol advertising is sickening and unavoidable for viewers. Even if few young viewers are suddenly propelled into binge drinking by what they see, the frequency of advertising, and consequent reach is what enables personalities like Warne to attempt to justify their answers.

As already mentioned I think it’s a touch unfair to localise the issue to Newcastle alone, because it certainly is no revolutionary tactic. All the way through last season, especially in the origin games, late tackles on kickers were prevalent. Obviously the blatantly late tackles should be punished, and are already being punished, but banning all late contact is just unfair towards the defensive side.

Newcastle's tactics a case of halves and halve nots

It certainly is still a scary side. Only change I’d make would be playing Maxwell at 5 over Marsh, as I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable with Marsh coming in that early. The batting depth of the side continued to amaze me throughout the world cup.

Australia's ODI team will only get better

Entirely agree with the article, channel 9 need to really lift their game. The commentating ought to be of the standard of cricket played and with the likes of James Brayshaw doing the honours that obviously won’t be the case. My problem with the ABC however is that their commentary only really works if you are watching the television broadcast. If merely listening it becomes incredibly difficult to follow play as ball by ball commentary and score updates are quite rare, as the commentators often revert to conversing about some long lost memory. Certainly the channel 9 commentators are guilty also of such a crime, but the screen broadcast at least means the cricket can be watched.

Channel Nine commentating team needs variety

To answer your question, the Championship is considered a part of ‘the football league’, but regardless I’d have to agree with you still that the move made by the FA is certainly beneficial to Australia and its players, with some either returning to the A League or playing in leagues offering better development. The comparatively low number of players currently in the English system, when compared with other nations and also stats of Australians in England 5-10 years ago, and this is most likely testament to that low capability for development that the English system offers.

Despite this, I’m also not sure of how much benefit this will prove to be to the FA. Surely there is a reason why the lower leagues contain quite a large number of foreign players, this being that local players, who it must be noted do not involve the hassle of visa management, are not of the desired quality. The removal of these players will surely reduce the quality of these leagues, in particular the Championship, thus creating an environment in which the plethora of English players will still fail to develop technically.

Under the proposed changes, the Premier League will still however maintain its quality, this being only due to the marquee players, who assumedly as they must attract a large sum of money, have probably completed most of their technical development. The league itself, even with more english players occupying the ranks of mid table clubs, will therefore fail to develop and may potentially become even more unbalanced, however the extent of this will most likely be reduced due to the presence of European players.

FA tells young Aussies to piss off

Australia definitely are capable of beating South Africa, its just I’m not as confident as everyone else because our batting line up was so very fragile during the ashes. Surely Brad Haddin can’t be relied upon to save every innings against an attack as strong as South Africa’s. But should Australia defeat South Africa, their confidence will grown enormously and this will swell throughout the next summer with matches away against Pakistan, back in Australia against the unhappy travellers India and then a trip to the Carribean to play the struggling West Indies. My worry is that Australia could go this whole period leading into the Ashes without losing a test and should England sort themselves out over the next year and a half the built up confidence could backfire.

Australia on the up - but world domination is another matter

Agree with you on that but Siddle has played a holding role in the attack all summer where he maintains the momentum created by the attacking bowlers, Johnson and Harris. Even if this role isn’t fit for playing South Africa he sure can come on first change and take big wickets, just look back to the England Ashes for examples. I’d love to see Patto back in the side at a stage but surely he’s too big of a risk, with the addition of the match fitness cloud, to play in the first test.

Drop Peter Siddle for James Pattinson

Surely the FFA has to draw the line at that. You can’t get a foundation club like Sydney to suddenly change their colours.

Heart find their place in the City

I wouldn’t put it like that. In quite a few games this season Moyes has made tactical errors, most notably the horrible lineup he put up against Sunderland in the first leg of the league cup semi. It is taking Moyes a bit of time to adjust to selecting the best squad of the players who have not been affected by injury and decisions, such as that to move Kagawa to centre midfield in place of Januzaj who moved to the wing, show that he is learning. Give him time.

Give Moyes time and he'll succeed

After he knocked out poor old bedsy last week channel 9 must have been screaming down the video refs line to not put him on report.

Once again it looks like you can’t win in this grand final unless you’re teams in it.

Liking the description above of Abbott being a “rugby union” man which sure sums up the style that’s made Manly the most hated of the NRL in past years.

Looking ahead to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup

The hypocritical Telegraph suddenly decides that Newcastle can get a double page spread when previously being lucky to get a paragraph. Then channel 9 starts doing interviews with our players! Only problem is that now most people think that Newcastle are only where they are because of coaching. Wish the media would give the players some credit, especially some of the young guys.
