Symonds and Watson are/were excellent ODI players but I would stop well short of calling either of them ‘all-time greats’.

Glenn Maxwell could be the greatest ODI player of all

Adam Goodes played pretty well last year considering his long term injury and lack of a pre-season. He is the type of player every team needs for his leadership and his experience. If a champion player like Goodes is willing to back himself for another year then he should get %100 support.

Will the Swans sink or swim after their 2014 grand final humiliation?

Olivia I hope your last paragraph was in reference to the players who played against Brisbane last week and not a comment on the Swans list as a whole.

Will the Swans sink or swim after their 2014 grand final humiliation?

6) Was tried a few years back with Rd1 Games on Wed,Thu,Fri,Sat,Sun,Mon. It didn’t work too well and I doubt it will be tried again.
7) Time on needs to be reviewed
8) Channels 9 & 10 joined forces a few years ago to televise AFL. 10 was good but 9 had the NRL and coverage of AFL went backwards.
9) Can’t lock anything in for that long. TV money will ensure that we get a night grand final sometime soon.
10) Don’t kill fantasy football but take those stats out of the coverage. While we’re at it get rid of the gambling odds.

Random ideas to improve the AFL (part II)

Canada and USA could be included in tours to West Indies. PNG could be included in tours to AUS. A couple of games against each of those countries as part of the tour.

What is the cricketing future of the associate nations?

Tim in your initial recipe you forgot to include one key ingredient.
Girls or Sex.

Sick of the ratbags? Here's the Rugby League Repute XVII

The $2 Billion figure is what the ICC sold the broadcast rights for the 201WC for.
For comparison the 2011 WC rights were worth $1.1 Billion and the ICC made $321 Million from the tournament and an annual surplus in 2011 of $230 Million approximately. In 2013 the ICC made a surplus of US$67 Million. (If I have the correct figures

If we assumed the ICC will make a surplus of $300 Million this year (being a World Cup Year) that seems to indicate a large amount of money able to be re-invested into the development of the Associate countries.

What is the cricketing future of the associate nations?

$2 Billion doesn’t sound right at all WCR

Giving assistant coaches the role of coaching the team in pre-season games is nothing new, many clubs have been doing it for years. In the AFL season proper it is rarer thought there have been plenty of one off instances of a senior coach being sick or otherwise unavailable for a game or two. I seem to remember Wayne Brittain was the match day coach for Carlton for basically a whole season while David Parkin was senior coach.

Why every AFL coach should take a back seat during the NAB Challenge

1) Base it on percentage. There are two way to improve your percentage, attack better or defend better. Encourages a more balanced team & strategy development.
2) Reduce the father/son qualification but not down to one game. The father needs to have been a long servant or star player for the legacy to have any meaning.
3) Some VIC clubs (Hello Eddie) have it too good, so some minimum travel requirements would be a good idea.
4) Thursday night game in Sydney last year got 44k attendance. Should be a winner if game starts earlier, i.e. 6pm & 1hr delayed telecast.
5) Launching entirely in Melbourne would alienate the other states.

Watson will be back.

The Liebke Ratings: Australia vs Afghanistan World Cup group game

David Lord trying to grab a cheap headline! Surely you jest.

Time to shine Michael Clarke

It was White and Gold

There's something about Shane

Do they play enough games really Josh?
What stats do you have to back up that statement?

A 10-team World Cup wouldn't be all that bad

Wow,

A great bit of news for the affordability of taking a family to the football comes out and the first three comments are negative.
Yes you can eat before the game if you like but kids will always want a pie and chips as part of their day at the football.
Gill McLachlan said he would make football more affordable and family friendly and he is delivering exactly that. Well done Gill.

MCG slash prices on pies and chips

The perfect place for a central stadium would be Barangaroo.
Walking distance to the city & Wynyard station.
Next door to the King St Wharf and Darling Harbour precincts.
Friday night games would get huge crowds.

Improved stadia a focus for NRL: Smith

For me there were two lessons from this game.
1. Australia tried to bully their little brother.
2. Little Brother stood up.

I see positives for the mental attitudes of both teams. Australia will learn that they still have to back up their aggressive style with solid disciplined play. A good wake up call.
New Zealand will gain the confidence that they are good enough to match it with the big boys skill wise and strong enough to hold their ground. A huge confidence booster.

Great to watch, but Australia just had a World Cup disaster

Dan, your idea is a good one but scheduling of matches for the associate countries must extend to regular matches played in all years,, not just a once in every four years qualifying tournament. This is the bigger problem as well as finances for the associate countries.

FIFA-style qualification for the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

I think the club would have made appropriate use of medical expertise to try and deal with Cousins’ problem as best it could and I’m not suggesting they did anything wrong. However the Illicit Drugs Policy that was being followed was obviously (and with hindsight) not effective. I think the harm to Cousins, the Club and the AFL was greater than it may have been if it had been made public earlier. Whilst the welfare of the player should come first if the intervention at the ‘first strike’ stage is not effective then the second stage intervention should be much greater and more public for the good of all.

Drug scandal no surprise: Brown

Dalgety, I believe John Worsfold (WCE Coach at the time) has spoken of the difficulties he faced with trying to deal with Ben Cousins issues.

Drug scandal no surprise: Brown

Ben Cousins’ issues with drugs were known about within the football club and probably within the AFL too. His issues were being managed under the AFL’s Illicit Drugs Policy and I question whether this management strategy worked in anyones best interests. Maybe it would have been better and caused less damage if he had been ‘outed’ first up.
Andrew Johns’ drug use was also known about within football circles. Tom Radounikis (NSW Blues trainer) stated that he was not surprised when Johns was ‘outed’ as he had known about it for a long time. Presumably his issues were being managed internally and privately and again I question whether it would have been better for all involved if he had been ‘outed’ straight away.

Drug scandal no surprise: Brown

Franko, I wouldn’t go quite that far but I think the Illicit Drugs Policies of various sports do allow too many issues/problems to be kept quiet and I question whether that is in the best interests of those sports, people involved and the general public.

Drug scandal no surprise: Brown

I wonder how much of the current cocaine scandal was foreshadowed by the AFP’s ‘Darkest day in Australian Sport’. That report was quickly forgotten by most people and dismissed as being a political stunt and a scare tactic. Seems to me that chickens may be coming home to roost.
Brown’s comments make me wonder just how much is being swept under the carpet.

Drug scandal no surprise: Brown

The relaxed interpretation of holding the ball and prior opportunity was, IMO, designed to reduce congestion, reduce stoppages and allow the game to flow more freely. There’s no doubt that congestion and increased numbers around stoppages had become a problem. making the game slower and less attractive. But the relaxed interpretation we saw last year probably went too far so tightening it up a little is probably a good thing, lets wait and see.

The blocking and the hands in the back interpretations of recent time are, IMO an attempt to swing the balance in the favour of the forwards. Higher scoring games can be more exciting and these changes will give forwards more opportunity. Again lets wait and see the effects

AFL's missed opportunity on rule changes

Fair enough on the FIFA world cup numbers Chris, my point was that cricket doesn’t have anywhere near the numbers to play a qualifying tournament format.

Cricket scheduling has many challenges, especially with the growth of T20 cricket. It’s much harder to schedule games now than even 5 years ago. Financial constraints also limit the smaller nations from playing more international matches and this is what needs to be addressed.

Why this World Cup has shown that we need associate nations
