I remember Hayden shouldering arms in a boxing day test against South Africa. Some media commentators said he would never play for Australia again, he was subsequently dropped and was averaging 60 at first class level when he returned several years later.
Australia's most unlucky Test cricketer
Cameron Boyce is ‘the one’ and how he is managed could determine whether Australia again has a test attack reguarly capable of getting 20 wickets. Glad that Trevor Hohns is involved in Queensland cricket and no doubt he will have an impact on Boyce’s development, though it was disappointing that recently Boyce was dropped for a game at the WACA. Yes the WACA is a spinners graveyard but Boyce needs all the first class bowling he can get and given conditions in Qld often favour seamers there have been times in the past 18 months that he has hardly be used as opposing teams have struggled to make 200 at the Gabba.
Trust in spinners will help them out of Warnie's shadow
Not sure that she will stay the 2500m as horses that reguarly come with withering bursts over 1200m-1600m rarely can stay. Good filly who should still win the Wakeful but not sure about the Oaks, Dowager Queen looks the Oaks filly for mine.
Taking Atlantic Jewel to the Oaks is a mistake
It’s also worth remembering that McGrath played One Day International Cricket before his test debut. At one stage Australia used One Day cricket to blood young bowlers and give them a taste of playing in front of big crowds and media scruinty, Damien Fleming and Paul Reiffel are two others who come to mind who followed this route.
I’d like to see Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and Pattinson etc rotated in the one day side before they are thrown to the wolves at test level.
Cummins bolts into Test team for South Africa tour
Yes missing Lynn was an oversight. Though he hasn’t had a good start to year missing first shield game with injury.
The Sheffield Shield 2011-12 preview
Suspect we won’t see alot happen over next couple of days then a few clubs will go mad on Friday. Setanta O’Hailpin may end up at Collingwood as a pinch hit forward/ruckman given the retirement of Leigh Brown.
GWS starting to sign and trade in earnest
Might have bothered to feign some interest had of the event been shown on ONE.
I suspect the Big Bash will attract reasonable crowds but without free to air coverage, fans will just switch off once their side is eliminated from the tournament. I really can’t see how they expect to make money from the extended format.
Mumbai wins CLT20 but nobody cares
Going back to 2006 after many years of non victorian clubs winning AFL premierships, many Victorian AFL supporters were encouraged to think that the VFL was a poor standard in comparison to the SANFL and WAFL, clearly this wasn’t the case and only in the past few years are we starting to see the VFL being acknowledged as a high standard of second tier football.
Since the demise of the AFL reserves, the AFL premiers have had several different 2nd tier models associated with their club, so nobody can clearly identify that one model is better than the other. Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast Eagles have all won premierships without reserves teams St Kilda have had a shaky alignment with Sandringham but can anybody really say that they would have been premiers with their own VFL side, i think not. Only essendon has grounds to really look at its VFL alignment as a hinderance as the arrangement with Bendigo has been farsical and doesn’t benefit both anybody.
Now that the Crows and Power are struggling they are looking to deflect the analysis away from their own clubs and looking for an easy target. Looks like the ‘downward envy’ has crossed the border.
VFL model not right for the SANFL
Bevan had alot of trouble with short pitched bowling but he was unlucky and with an opportunity could have been a solid number six test batsman. Unlike Hayden, Steve Waugh, Martyn etc he had his papers stamped.
