Bombers tragic and feral Storm supporter. Between these two champion clubs, I have seen them win 10 flags, even if I was a bit young for two of them. Pretty good haul for any sports lover! Favourite quote: "No-one ever says it's only a game when you win" - Dermott Brereton

Plenty of talented girls in FNQ where I live that live and breathe League, but feel that it’s not a viable career due to lack of opportunity and low pay. More teams and better pay and they’ll be spending their early teenage years with an eye on an NRL career, just like the boys around here do

I understand the trepidation around too-rapid growth and falling product quality, but the competition needs to expand as rapidly as possible as the NRL are well behind other Australian sports in their “W” offerings. There is far more opportunity to play AFLW, Big Bash W, soccer, or traditionally strong female sporting codes like Netball and tennis at the moment, and if athletic teenage girls feel that NRLW list spots are too competitive, they will turn to other sports. More roster spots means more opportunity and that can only be a good thing. The sooner every NRL club has an affiliated NRLW club, the better. I love supporting my AFLW team as well as my AFL team – I can’t wait to get behind the Storm’s W team! The biggest thing that will grow product quality is players being paid full time to train and play. Have a look at what NRL games looked like before they were fully professional if you need a reminder of the difference full professionalism makes to athletes.

I’m not convinced about the conditioning or mental toughness. It’s easy to run hard when things are going your way, but to keep up the pace in the second half when an opposition team comes at you takes fitness and committment. Great that the dogs won, but based on this game they are still missing at least 1 of those 2 ingredients

I feel like I say this once every week, but criticising refereeing decisions after a loss is poor coaching. It gives players excuses and removes accountability. I’d love to see a referee rebuttal after the coaches presser – after this game, it probably would have been something like, “The skills coaches at the Roosters in particular are really letting them down at the moment, as Radley still does not seem to be able to consistently lay legal tacles and and Young has not been shown how to make contact with the opposition in a way consistent with the laws of the game. 7 HIAs in a game is just not good enough at this level and the caoching staff need to bear some of the responsibility for that.”

It’s good to not be happy and always strive to be better. It’s part of why Bellamy is a great coach. But it’s also good when you can play ugly and win against good teams. They’ve played the best 3 teams from last year and found a way to win against each of them. Wishart and Pezet learned a lot against the Knights and I’d be a lot more confident if they had to combine without Hughes and Munster again. They loaded up on difficult matches early and over the next few weeks they should have some easier matches to tune up with. Think they are in a good place all things considered

Who touched the player on the ground? Didn’t see it in the replay. Thought he went to ground after catching the kick on his back, then Munster grabbed the ball and scored. Thought Munster was a bit unlucky myself

They have identified that height on the wings for kicks is the way of the future, and that’s why they have Coates and Warbrick

I was an AFL fan before I was an NRL fan, and I can confirm that the Melbourne Storm make it easy to fall in love with the game 😁

So players go to Melbourne and get better, leave Melbourne they go backwards… Says a lot about the club and their standards doesn’t it?

Melbourne did the same thing with Addo-Carr

Don’t forget location. I’ll bet a 600k salary goes a lot further for a Warriors, Kinghts or Cowboys player than it does for players in Sydney

Pretty much anyone who does power rankings underrates them. Not sure how people missed that they started the year beating the premiers and preliminary finalists despite missing key players, but as Mike said, they have a bit of “out of sight, out of mind” about them hiding away down south.

Storm warning: We’re sleeping on Melbourne again – they might be the biggest threat to the Panthers

NAS might not be performing because he hasn’t played yet this year due to injury. Do you even follow the game

What a ridiculous over-reaction this article is. Because we noticed the free kicks he was playing for earlier, every time he doesn’t get one now people notice it. Lots of players miss getting a high contact free kick at various points and it isn’t treated like the footy apocalypse. Honestly, to read thisbyou’d think the umpires eyeball him at the start of each match and then tell him that stagers can look after themselves. Maybe if he stops bending at the knees as soon as he hears a footstep and starts building a reputation a tough, fair small forward who doesn’t look for soft free kicks, he’ll play better footy? Oh, he might want to lay off the nose candy too.

Umpires' anti-Ginnivan bias has reached a new low - it's time for the AFL to step in

So who were the Panthers missing when they failed to score in round 1 against Melbourne? I know Melbourne were missing Munster and NAS, but based on your comment I need to know the slew of awesome players Penrith must have been missing when they were held to nil.

Melbourne did lose last week, but were only beaten when missing both their halves, their starting centre and their most important forward. Apart from that, all they’ve done is keep the 3 time Premiers scoreless and run over the top of last year’s preliminary finalists; obviously nothing convincing about that though

WCE aspire to one day be average. At the moment, if they keep Reid on field all year, the veterans perform to their maximum and the kids come on strong, and they have no major injuries, they might just be able to improve from being a laughing stock to merely being very very bad.
