The answers are obvious. Paine CAN NOT play if for no other reason than he will be a distraction which is the last thing the Australians need. I am singularly unimpressed with Carey as keeper. Who can forget his job in the Australian A team against India at the SCG last summer. The standout is Josh Inglis. Apart from his keeping (which is equal to any Australian keeper) his batting last summer brought back memories of a rampant Gilchrist. He has done nothing wrong since having set grounds alight with his batting during the northern summer. If Inglis is the standout as a keeper then Pat Cummins is a beacon as the captain which leaves the selection of his deputy. With Smith in the team as a figure of authority whose advice can be sought the selectors should be sufficiently daring to appoint Cameron Green as vice captain. But will they have the courage to make such a bold step?
Australia's newest selector faces some serious headaches
When deciding the question of the bye, consider the possible scenario. The AFL decided to keep the bye after the final round and not after the Preliminary Final. In the preliminary final Petraca is concussed and , under the AFL’s head injury protocol, is forced to miss the GF. We are then denied seeing one of the outstanding performances of all time. In the US the NFL have this bye. It MUST be kept so that the scenario I outlined cant occur.

Agree wholeheartedly with a third Perth team but it must happen from a relocation. The competition can not cope with more teams. The logical side is North Melbourne who cant draw a crowd with crayons. They have had so many inducements…Canberra, Gold Coast and now Hobart and have major issues in getting a decent crowd. Let them keep their colours and rebrand them as the Perth Northern Kangaroos. Perth has a southern team (Fremantle) and an eastern suburbs team based at Lathlain Park (WC Eagles). Get Perth Northern Kangaroos a base in the north (Joondalup) and assist them with Melbourne marketing for the rusted-on Shinboners, not unlike the Sydney Swans (South Melbourne).
And while I’m at it, Kardinya Park is totally underutilised…why not get the Western Bulldogs to play their home games there. This will make greater use of he redeveloped Kardinya Park as well as take some of the pressure off Docklands.
Where should the AFL expand to next?
There’s too much emphasis placed on player input when it comes to training / coaching. Langer has shown that he’s an expert coach who isnt beholden to players feelings. Can you imagine Barassi adjusting his methods so that he didnt offend the players?
On another matter. When will the selectors realise that they chose incorrectly when selecting the wicketkeeper.? There’s daylight between Inglis and Carey! Carey appears to be a thoroughly amiable chap but his keeping in Sydney was sub standard. Inglis has to be chosen in Hobart.
