Geelong’s weakness is in the Midfield. Stanley has never been a Ruck but makes up for some deficiencies with his athleticism around the ground. Every team accumulates more midfield possessions when playing Geelong. Guthrie’s return would’ve stemmed some of this but losing Dangerfield in the centre again puts Geelong one step back again.

Really? That’s the best you can come up with? A ground you don’t play at? The facts are Carlton led by a maximum of 2 points for 37 seconds out of more than 120 minutes of football. They were outplayed by a better team and a better coach. Scott & co exploited a weakness in Carlton’s game plan.

I remember saying to Peter T.S. when Henry was drafted by Collingwood he would be at Geelong at the end of his draft contract. I think he only play around 5 games in his second season at Collingwood. Of course one of the reasons that Geelong is consistent is it has many players from its local area whereas other teams have little to no players from their immediate area and rely on players from further afield. If my memories serves me correctly two of Carltons best are from the Geelong Falcons. I think Warpol and Parish are two others. You’re welcome. Yes Don, sorry I didn’t mention Freo.

To me its a fine at best. If you are looking for equality you are assuming there is something less in being gay as if that is considered something to penalise. We wouldn’t even comment on a heterosexual “slur”. Was the player that it was aimed at even concerned or affected by it?
Football is a tough and occasionally brutal sport. If you are not tough physically and mentally you wont survive in AFL or for that matter the world at large.
I wonder how many “short” jokes and slurs Caleb Daniel has had to endure not only in his life but sporting career. Nobody ever mentions that. In fact how many AFL clubs didn’t even consider him purely because of his height? Still never stand in the way of a virtue signaller and the target. The hypocrisy of some people is palpable.

The point I was making was that they did it with a lack of high end draft picks, which no other team has done. I would say Geelong has had the least number of draft picks in the top 10 by a country mile. The ones you mentioned are irrelevant as they were players that were available to all other teams. It was just Geelong identified a need and picked them up. I wouldn’t mention Ablett. Geelong’s compensation from GCS was a pittance for one of the best players in the game.

One could say Chris Scott should’ve been sacked before 2022. He inherited a lot of good players that won in ’11 and many criticised him for not going back to the draft and rebuild. Brisbane has the good players but to me they do not look like a good fit in the context of the team. More like a collection of good individuals. Clarkson went back to the well and picked up some brilliant players and was aided by the compromised draft. Bevo and Hinkley are both good coaches but they have been at their respective teams too long. Maybe they have just become too predictable by other coaches and that is killing them at the pointy end. Chris Scott is one of a few that can sustain a long career at one club by constant changing and re inventing himself to the players.
IMHO admittedly prejudiced, Scott is the greatest coach this century. While Clarko and Dimma had great success neither were able to sustain it as they lost continual access to the best of the draft and their teams fell off the cliff without that access. This is the fate of many coaches since the inception of draft socialism. Scott alone has shown it can be done without a continuous supply of top end talent. Fagan IMO is a good coach but has not been able to get them to gel as a complete team, playing for each other.

No doubt that Richmond need a rebuild but who has some draft capital to give the rebuild a kick start? Cant think of anyone that Richmond didn’t want to keep that other teams would be willing to pay overs for. Who of the older players would be kept to help the next generation coming through? Names don’t exactly jump off the page.
Teams aren’t going to want to be in the rebuild phase when Tassie enters in ’28 and drains the talent pool even further as did GWS. There will be a lot of activity in the next 3 years as teams get the list they need for an assault on the flag. This will be an interesting trade period.
I cant see the Tiges competing until at least ’28. Look at Hawthorn who will take at least 10 years between drinks, one would think the Tigers at best will be 2030. Makes me glad I’m a Cats supporter.

A bit harsh. Guthrie out Atkins out Duncan out Bruhn out with one midfielder playing with less than 3 games. A 9 to 18 free kick diff in Adelaide’s favour at their home ground and that’s what you base Geelong’s midfield performance on? If memory serves me the Cats manage one free kick in over 50 tackles. Despite all that the pussies took home the chocolates. It’s not Adelaide’s reliance on Tex and Laird, two brilliant players I might add, but it’s the fact that the rest of the team aren’t good enough collectively to make a serious assault on the finals.

Yes. There is a long season to go and hopefully my analysis will prove wrong for the doggies. Hopefully my tipping will be better this year though. I’ve already missed the first week and half of the second and generally miss about 6 weeks or so every year. Mostly attributable to being somewhere in the back blocks of Thailand. Mind you even there the internet is generally better than most of Oz.

With the depth of talent one needs to question whether Bevo still has it. I like the doggies but think their best years are behind them now and although they may contend I don’t think they can win it. They are stuck in that awful place some teams find themselves, where they are too talented for a rebuild but that moment when everything clicks and propels them into the GF has passed them by..

I’m glad you took comfort in teams beating the Cats last year. With anywhere between 5 to eight of their best players out each week and not content with that, trying to commit on field Hari Kari aka; Rohan on Cameron.
Fear not, no such comfort for you in 2024. Expect the brilliance of Wells and co once again prove they are the best recruiters in the AFL. Expect some new names to shine. Including a TK type.
