Demolition of Allianz Stadium has not started yet, as a story in yesterday’s Sydney Morning Herald made clear.

Planning approval is expected within the next two or three weeks, according to an Infrastructure NSW bureaucrat.

If that approval is granted, contractors will wait until the end of the Australia-India cricket Test before moving in with their heavy machinery.

NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley has warned the Government against going ahead with the demolition. Daley said that if Labor were to win government in the March state election, his party would not rebuild the stadium.

Sydney is the most embarrassing city in Australia

Let’s have a conversation about conversions.

‘Friendlies’. Really?

Danny, this is not a cheap shot, but it looks like ‘decile’ got autocorrected to ‘decibel’.

Unless some schools are louder than others, that is.

In any case, despite going to school in New Zealand, I’ve never been able to find out exactly what ‘decile’ means in an educational context.

Rugby in New Zealand is at risk of becoming an elite game

Saturday night’s Test gave me lots of reasons to shake my head in disbelief, but one incident had me shouting impotently at the TV: the substitution of Matt Toomua.

Well done on your first 10 years, Brett, and congratulations also for your continuing loyalty to The Roar. Many more years to come, we hope.

Fan abuse is never great, but the message to the Wallabies is clear

A truly dreadful idea. Charitably, O’Rourke might have just been putting some talking points out there to gauge the reaction, but these talking points, if that is what they are, show a fundamental misunderstanding of the game.

They also show the corporate mentality at work, in the sense that the suits decide a sporting occasion should not be allowed to generate its own atmosphere.

We hope the music never comes to pass. But the first time that truly ghastly cover version of Bruce Channel’s great 1962 hit Hey! Baby comes over the loudspeakers will be the last time I attend an A-League match.

Music during play at A-League games is the FFA's worst idea yet

OK, I got caught out last week by the AFL’s incomprehensible bye round.

The finals finally start tonight, so where do I go for tipping purposes?

David, were you on familiar terms with Terry ‘Seldom’ Smith, who died recently? I suspect you were.

I worked with Terry at The Daily Telegraph in the 1980s. He was always happy to talk about rugby.

Well done, The Roar, for giving the Shute Shield final such prominence.

Up to 20,000 spectators are expected at North Sydney Oval this afternoon, and there will be a solid TV audience for the 7TWO broadcast, spearheaded by commentators Tony Lewis and Cam Shepherd.

In the absence of Eastwood, I’ll back the Rats.

I haven’t been sent a reminder email about doing this weekend’s AFL tips using the new, temporary measure. Can’t find anything on the site.

So, I’m tipping Richmond, Melbourne, Sydney and West Coast.

It’s now 6.49pm on Thursday.

The Week 1 AFL finals fixture is a disaster

Looks good on the iPhone too.

The Roar has relaunched! Welcome to a new Roar

Sponsors come and sponsors go, and it’s hard to keep up.

New Zealand’s national provincial championship (NPC) was sponsored by ITM up to and including 2015. For 2016, Mitre 10 took over. The third season of the Mitre 10 Cup began on August 16.

Unlike Wallabies Tests, Super Rugby and the Shute Shield, the NRC has no presence on free-to-air television. In my neck of the woods, the Central Coast Rugby Union competition and the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union competition will continue until September 15. Thus, the NRC does not figure prominently on the radar.

But it’s a step in the right direction.

Can the NRC live up to its potential?

I use Firefox on the laptop, which is where the paragraphing snafu occurred.

Haven’t yet tried The Roar on the iPad, where the browser is Safari.

Stuart, if you’re spending a bit of time in the lower regions of the North Island, make a point of visiting the Wairarapa region.

In particular, have a good look at Greytown. Then head a bit less than 20 minutes south to have lunch at the Martinborough Hotel.

Suitably fortified, you can get back behind the wheel and think about heading over the Rimutaka Hill to Wellington. That’s a trip everybody should do at least once. Just once.

I wrote my previous comment in paragraphs, but it has appeared run together as one continuous paragraph.

Please explain.

Sans serif rules, OK?

The new look is clean and invitingfor the most part.

What’s with the 24 blurred pictures at the top of this page?

Contributors’ head shots need to be bigger. Brett McKay is barely recognisable.

I tried to post a comment just now on a rugby piece but was told that ‘comments are closed on this item’. It would have been good to know that before writing the comment.

But over all . . . good work.

That’s true, but it’s not the case here. No evidence of self harm, according to the police.

NRL mourns loss of former player Lance Thompson

Police have said that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Normally, that is code for suicide.

But in other reports, police have been quoted as saying that there is ‘no evidence of self-harm’.

Probably a medical episode, then. Unusual for a man of 40, but not unprecedented.

Correct, Wal, that is Skinner fourth from left, with Peter Jones on his left.

What are we to make of this strange saga?

Are the Mariners being exploited, willingly or unwillingly?

Why would The Daily Telegraph put this ‘story’ on its front page? Is there a commercial tie-in from which the newspaper might benefit?

Or is it just the case that Bolt is looking for somewhere to train while he’s in Australia, and the Mariners have made him welcome in return for some sprint-training tips? That’s the innocent interpretation, but spin doctors may be responsible for turning it into something quite different.

Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth has said that he will guarantee to pay Bolt $700,000 if the latter comes through his trial and is offered a contract. Nice one, Mike.

I hear that the FFA would be prevailed upon to come up with an additional 300k to top up Bolt’s contract. But a Fairfax story suggests that cooler heads at FFA are by no means committed to a presence at the party.

Will it come to anything? Hope not.

My mate and I have been Sydney FC members for 12 seasons but, with Sydney now homeless and committed to playing at the SCG, Jubilee Oval and Leichhardt Oval next season, we’re thinking of lending our support to the Mariners. Gosford is roughly halfway between Sydney, where he lives, and Newcastle, my home base. We would be less rather than more likely to sign up for Mariners membership if the Bolt circus goes ahead.
