Thanks for the article, interesting perspective.

My my this situation is turning into a new could war between NZR and RA.

I think it all comes down to why NZR want this Pasifika team included. NZR has referenced the massive popularity international rugby league teams like Samoa and Tonga have had in south Auckland. They really want to push for the inclusion of the Pasifika identify in the game to harness that popularity. Dropping a bunch of PI players into Aus teams will not achieve that goal so NZR won’t want any of it. Note to mention many of these PI players will likely be NZ schooled and trained.

As much as I love having 5 Aus teams again, I really don’t think it will be sustainable long term. Just watching the NZ and Aus super rugby games this weekend, that crusaders v hurricanes game was incredible. Contrast that with the sorry display the tahs put on or the level the force played at. Who in 2021 wants to watch their team get torn apart by NZ teams. Not me that’s for sure. What I would give to see the Brumbies of old laying waste to the NZ and RSA teams.

If we are being honest, the only real solution is to downsize and consolidate our talent and strength.

A solution to the latest trans-Tasman rugby pickle

Western Force? Get some of the twiggy Forrest money?

Sonny Bill Williams in limbo after Toronto quits Super League

Would love to see this guy kit up from Eastwood again. Yappiest little HB I’d ever seen and could kick the ball for miles.

Nic White could get Super Rugby AU run after returning to Brumbies

If he has signed and if it is for the reported $3mil 3 year deal then I must say this incredibly frustrating. How can RA and the Tahs foot such a cost when the game is falling apart at the seams. Madness.

From the footage the guy seems very talented but he is clearly way more developed than the other 16 yo he is playing with and against.

If RA want to spend this much on the player then that’s their call but they can’t cry foul when NZ says the question the viability of Australian rugby teams.

RA and Dave Rennie get in under Souths' guard to nab teenage sensation

Soft tackling by the Tahs. Not sure how you can look your teammate in the eye after such a poor effort less that 4 mins from FT, 10m out from your own line. Contrast that with the Chiefs v Highlanders came. The quality of code is incomparable.

Young Brumby's outstanding late solo effort pinches unlikely win

Not sure how we can justify 5 Aus teams. We cut the Force because they were too much of a strain on the bottom line of Aus Rugby. What’s changed? It’s not like our financial situation has improved. Yes twiggy Forrest is back in the good books and saying all the right things “equity, long term investment, growing the game etc” but that is certainly not something we can hang our hat on.

My opinion (not that anyone asked), cut the Rebels or merge them with Brumbies. Not even the seagulls go to their home games. I don’t care if there is a big market down there in Melb. We can’t crack it now and we are certainly not doing so by having a crap team.

At the end of the day, Fox Sports stats showed that the most watched (by Aus viewers) regular season super games were NZ derbies. Aus Rugby needs to feed of NZs success. If that means cutting a team like the Rebels so bet it

Rugby Australia coy after NZ announce preferred Super Rugby format

Great article Gen! Many thanks. Good to get a bit of positivity and creativity in rugby discussions.

P. S. Also love the use of subheadings (breath of fresh air).

Raelene Castle resigns as Rugby Australia CEO

Why are we intent on destroying ourselves?

Raelene Castle resigns as Rugby Australia CEO

Tom I have never seen a comment on any Roar thread that contradicts itself as much as this one…

11 former Wallaby captains sign letter calling for Rugby AU leadership resignations

Forget the average Joe and their opinion of the CEO. Their opinions are nor qualified not expert. How can a business run if the executives are subject to the whims and feelings of those who haven’t got a clue. If we want a sport run by average Joe’s then we can start an indoor cricket team. Rugby is a multimillion dollar business and needs tough administrators. If these 11 wrote a letter about how Michael Hooper can better captain the team then I’d listen but they need to stay in their lane and accept the game is for more than just them.

11 former Wallaby captains sign letter calling for Rugby AU leadership resignations

Wait. Just so I have this clear. We have a bunch of Fox Sports employees with ulterior motives, narcissists, failed administrators at state and club level and a guy who has been banned from providing financial service for 5 years for dodgy administration. These guys wrote a letter criticising the current RA administration? Are you serious? Doesn’t the old boys club have no shame?

11 former Wallaby captains sign letter calling for Rugby AU leadership resignations

Even ignoring Covid-19 I’m not sure I’m happy with these guys getting paid in full after the sad excuse for rugby they’ve put up this season.

Waratahs players paid in full – for this month

Great article.

Totally agree that this pile on Castle has to stop. People need to realise that Pulver and O’Neill have to cop the majority of the blame for the mess they left.

Fast five: Talking points from the latest raid on rugby's 'Castle'

Nice article! Good read that.
I’ve got to say that the older I get the less I can tell the difference between Kiwis and Tasmanians. Even Deep South Victorians are cause for confusion.

How the Kiwis ruined rugby for Australians

I think I have a better 5 point plan (Short term and not including what has already happened):

1. Full endorsement of the current CEO and BoD for 2020-21 to deal with Covid related financial issues (subject to review in 2021-22).

2. Immediate 65% reduction in CEO, BoD and player wages until September 2020 (subject to review on announcement of the resumption of play).

3. Introduction of player option allowing certain level players to get out of their current contracts (limited to certain players).

4. Introduction of a Rugby Australia Covid Social Engagement campaign. Top players who want only a 50% cut and not 65% must be engaged in a social media campaign and providing RA approved daily (maybe) content to stay engaged with fans. (Limited to certain players)

5. The mob at Fox Sports be put into quarantine for 4 weeks in which cannot give their opinions on how things are going.

Tim Horan's way forward for Australian rugby

Someone should check on Timmy, he’s losing it in self isolation.
1. RUPA/RA players pay deal” – Duh Tim, that’s what they’re doing.
”2. Loan from Aus Gov and World Rugby” – Aus Gov already said no to sports loans and World Rugby has a lot on its plate so can’t be guaranteed. Does he think a barley solvent organisation can just get a loan? Crikey.
“3. 10/12 week 5 or 6 team domestic comp Force+Sunwolves July start.” – Sunwolves has already disbanded.
“4. Restart broadcast negotiations” – any deal made in the short term will be massively reduced. All parties have agreed to suspend negotiations. Who are they going to negotiate with themselves?
“5. 2021 Asian/Pac Super Rugby (with laws to allow ball in play longer).” – only country in Asia that watches rugby is Japan and they has their own comp and are not looking to expand. Tonga, Fiji, Samoa is etc are barely solvent themselves. So essentially he’s asking for a barely solvent competition that no one will watch where the play rugby league.
Tim Horan was a great player. So was Kearns. Kafer was not but hey. I’m just so sick of hearing these relics talk about things they have no knowledge of or no expertise to make such suggestions.

Tim Horan's way forward for Australian rugby

Last Shute Shield match I went to there were so many consecutive knock-ons that the ref just said play on. The club game is not professional and trying to make it professional will cause it to loose what makes it great. I don’t want to go see USYD v Eastwood at a barely full ANZ Stadium because the powers at be have caved to big stadium money. I don’t want to see Warringah v Manly at Brookvale and then have to endure a media personality/comedian host a forced sponsor related halftime show.
Club rugby is what it is because it isn’t professional. It’s not polished or pretty but that’s fine.

Super Rugby not working for Australia – Moore

I could cry – thank goodness

We have a date: NRL confirm plans to restart season

Can’t stand the bloke. He lives in complete irrelevancy then comes out of the shadows every so often to kick Aus rugby when it’s down. He portrays himself as a man who knows what he’s talking about, and we’re all suppose to forget about the monumental disaster his time at the NSWRU was.

If Nick Farr-Jones was in charge of rugby

Got to say that was a very orange looking yellow. There were a few “got away with it” moments this past round. Though Feauai-Sautia was bloody lucky not to be marched. They said no arms but it hit the shoulder not the head. I reckon it hit the throat/lower jaw, at least bouncing up. Just a penalty. Also Dane Coles was lucky not to see yellow for sure.

Tomkinson handed three-week ban over Banks hit

Completely agree jeznez. Almost a completely new coaching team and most of them didn’t start until well into the pre-season. The same cannot be said for Wessels and Thorn. If those guys can’t turn it around this year then I reckon it’s lights out for them.

Battling Tahs aim to support young guns

Ooft, that’s a big kick.

Jordie Barrett breaks NZ record with utterly gigantic penalty kick

He looks like he’s about to fall asleep at his own unveiling.

Israel Folau speaks for the first time since signing with Catalans Dragons

Yeah this is not a great sign. It may be time for Aus and NZ to consider joining the japan comp. It sounds like they don’t have there format 100% sorted either so might be the perfect time. There’s a lot of money in Japanese rugby. Especially after the RWC. The issue would be revenue sharing. Japan will likely be pretty set on them getting a larger share given their audience.
