How to stage a League versus Union match

Well done to the Force and well done to their fans for their great support. I’m sure they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in next year’s Super 15.

Hill the hero as Force win Super 14 thriller

I have to say, the first year the 7’s came to Adelaide, I was a bit sceptical. Told myself it’s not like the traditional 15’s. Second year I thought let’s go see what it is all about, seeing that it is growing in popularity. I have to say I loved every minute of it. I even watched the games being played. The results were not really that important.

This year, I went to the Adelaide 7’s all three days. Even the Friday evening was great, although it was too short. I wanted it to go on.

I would love to go to the Wellington, Hong Kong and Las Vegas 7’s one day. Although the entertainment aspect is not on my priority list, we have to acknowledge that 7’s is meant for entertainment. The 15 a side game will always be my no.1 choice, but there will always be room for the 7’s.

Thanks Andrew for the article. It’s always nice to read about nations like Georgia and their passion for Rugby. I remember seeing Portugal in the 2007 RWC and how passionately they sang their national anthem. This is the reason why I love watching the Rugby world Cup and Rugby in general. In a country like Australia, you will still find a small percentage that will not know who the Wallabies are or care if they play in the RWC. It’s quite sad to see this. All they would complain about is how bad the Wallabies played in the RWC and how unentertaining the final (2007 RWC)was.

Georgian rugby on the rise thanks to Turtle and RWC

Went to last year’s 7’s on both Sat and Sun and to this year’s one on Fri, Sat and Sun. I was surprised at how well it was attended on Friday evening. Both Saturday and Sunday had good crowds. Atmosphere was great. The only problem I have with Adelaide oval is, it is too far from the action (the same problem they had at Subi oval in Perth). A rectangular field would be better suited.

I say keep it in Adelaide, but it needs to get a whole lot more exposure on the telly. It was advertised in the paper a lot and on Nova 91.9. It needs a catchy advert on TV to show some of the action. I think just seeing it in the newspaper will not be appealing enough to the non rugby follower.

Rugby’s missed opportunity

Oh dear. 3D. Sounds like fun, but I think I would prefer a live game instead.

I’m sure Rugby doesn’t need 3D to make it more exciting for Americans to watch. C’mon they watch NFL. Resetting a scrum 3 times is nothing compared to all the time outs and stoppages they have in NFL. Maybe I’ll try to watch an NFL game in 3D one day. I might keep the telly on for longer than one minute this time.

Will 3D technology save rugby?

Rugby is only in trouble in Aus. It’s flourishing in SA, NZ, Europe. Wales vs Ireland match: 81 340 attendance, Stormers vs Canes: 44 500. NZ games had good attendances too. Btw, Matt Rodgers? He still doesn’t know anything about rugby. Thank God he went back to league.

Rugby fans must acknowledge problems

Lions vs Tahs attendance: 16 878

Final score: Tahs 73. Lions 12.

Who's to blame for falling Super 14 crowds?

Troy, I think you missed the comment I made further up. I am not criticising the game. I was pointing out all the the complaints from the fans. Wouldn’t want to be caught dead watching league.

Who's to blame for falling Super 14 crowds?

Thanks for adding to my list…… the rules are too complicated, the scrums, the lineouts, the kicking, the refs, the names of the NZ and Saffa teams, tickets are too expensive, the rugby starts too early in the season, games are played on Friday’s, finals are being played in a different country, the games in SA is on when they have to sleep.

Need I say more.

Who's to blame for falling Super 14 crowds?

Good article Andrew. I fully agree. The supporters themselves are to blame. They bitch about almost everything i.e the rules are too complicated, the scrums, the lineouts, the kicking, the refs, the names of the NZ and Saffa teams, tickets are too expensive, the rugby starts too early in the season, games are played on Friday’s, finals are being played in a different country, the games in SA is on when they have to sleep……. Honestly! Complain, complain, complain!!!

I have a good solution. Fine, stop going to the games. Stop supporting your teams. That will be the end of Australian rugby. I’m sure that’s what everyone wants. Take away the 7’s too. No more rugby in Australia. The Northern hemisphere and other codes can’t wait for that moment.

Who's to blame for falling Super 14 crowds?

Don’t forget the Saffa crowds, especially the Stormers and Bulls fans. Always good atmospheres at their games.

I don’t think 7’s will be the death of 15’s. It’s like cricket. People still enjoy test cricket (the purists), but it’s good to have a shorter version of the the game as well. The same for Rugby. Test rugby is still great. It’s good to have the 7’s so that places where rugby still needs to be established gets an appetite of the real thing eg. Adelaide, USA etc.

I only really started liking the 7’s since last year. I still prefer the 15 man code though. The 7-a side code is like the 20/20 in cricket. Mainly for promotional purposes. That’s why, Katipo, it is played in Adelaide, to promote the game of Rugby and mainly the 15 a-side code. I think it’s great that they have it in Adelaide. Crowds are starting to build every year, so I think it’s a good choice to have it in Adelaide. I think they just need to promote it more i.e on the t.v and radio and it will start growing even more.

If only the Adelaide 7’s can get as much exposure. It is only a few weeks to go and you hardly hear about the 7’s in Adelaide. Nothing on the radio or t.v. The newspapers will have a small advertisement in the corner, but that’s it. Would be good if they get more exposure. It is an International tournament after all. Enough of my rant…… Go USA!!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with S14 and Rugby in NZ. I spoke to a Kiwi girl the other day ( she’s working in Aus) and she plays and loves Rugby. I can understand that crowd figures is a bit low, being summer and all, but it will pick up soon. From what I understand, Rugby is definitely a religion in NZ. Nothing wrong with that. Good on them.
Crowds are always high at Stormers and Bulls matches, no matter if it’s still summer. These two teams must have the most passionate supporters,in my opinion.
Aus teams are getting good support as well. Let’s hope they keep it up.

Is rugby slipping in popularity in NZ?
