He’s the Messiah of Cleveland… which I think colloquially equates to being the next head coach of the Wallabies

Will Manning's TD record ever be broken?

Another nice article Sam. Glad the Roar boys recognised your talents and gave you the bump to expert. Congrats and well deserved.

One thing that I would point out, which you briefly touched on, is the change in league rules over the past five years that have made it easier for teams to be successful in the passing game. Defensive holding, pass interference and hits on unprotected receiver rule changes have all contributed to a growth trend in QB stats in the past half decade.

In theory this should make Manning’s record easier to break in the future but as you say, 17 years of Quarterbacking, 15 of which were at an elite level, will be extraordinarly hard to replicate.

I’m with the rest of the sheep in thinking that Luck is the only current QB that has a genuine chance but there is a dark horse that no one has mentioned yet…

Johnny Football!

You read that far into the article before you found a ridiculous comment? Srsly? Clearly I’ll have to up my game next week.

As for the infamous ‘Lure Block’, I have good information (one of McDaniels’ cousins videotaped a Denver training session for me during the week) that the Broncos had been practising this dastardly play. John Fox even went so far as to assign knicknames to his players while the ran it. Clady was ‘Big Cheese’, Julius Thomas was ‘The Frying Pan’ and Sylvester ‘The Mouse’ Williams acted as Calais Campbell during run throughs which only ended when Peyton yelled out “That’s all folks!”

Mushi, I thought I was being complimentary to Houstonites.

The running dodgy tally is 39/76 after the Professor got carried home by TY Hilton tonight. If you’re a stickler (why are you reading this column?) you’ll realise I’m one pick short overall after exercising a ‘No Johnny Football’ boycott in the opening round. I may have inadvertently blessed Brian Hoyer in in doing so somehow…

Big Dawg's Dodgy NFL Tips Week 6

I think that injury/ rehabiliation concerns are valid and likely feed into my main issue with Thursday night football which is, for whatever reason, the quality of games seems to decline considerably.

This year the smallest margin of defeat in TNF through 5 weeks has been 20 points and the largest has been 42. Without the additional preparation it seems that QBs who are average to begin with become very bad and QBs that are good seem to thrive even more.

Moreso than usual, I think the ‘take the best QB’ rule applies. You can imagine who I’m picking in this Thursday’s Fitzpatrick v Luck matchup…

The NFL must scrap Thursday Night Football

There was no shame in Murica’s team losing to the 49ers in week one but I think it’s important to have a look at the teams they’ve beaten: Tennessee, St Louis and New Orleans.
These teams have a combined record of 3-8 after 4 weeks. Tennessee and St Louis are both likely to anchor their divisions and I think it’s fair to say the Saints are well and truly in the discussion for most disappointing team of the year so far.
Next week’s Texas derby against Houston, another team who are 3-1 on the back of a light schedule, will be a better indicator as to where they’re at.
Personally, I think they’re still an average team who’ll trade wins and losses with other average teams, end up 8-8 for the year and miss out on the playoffs when Philly win the division…

Dallas Cowboys continue to rise

I tend to agree Astro. Looks like Cavs and Bulls are the clear 1 & 2 (order is dependant on which Rose returns and how quickly the Cavs can gel as a team) from there I only expect the Wizards to improve and even that’s no sure thing.

Last year Dallas was the 8th seed in the West with a record that would have pegged them 3rd in the East. I think we’re likely to see something similar – if not worse – again this season. It’s not impossible to think that the West’s 8th seed has a record that could earn them the deuce in the East. The East is a deuce.

An optimist's guide to the 2014/15 NBA season: Eastern Conference (Part One)

I was surprised at the price. The Vikings defence is solid but Matty Ice will have a day out on the artifical green. Even with Teddy B, I can’t see the Vikes being anything more than mediocre on offense. My magic 8 ball says the Falcons are definitely worth throwing in a 3-leg all up with NO and Detroit.

The Seminoles would have a better chance in the NFL than the current Floridian contingent.

Good read Cameron,

The Cardinals are a frustrating team. Their defence is brutal at present, largely because they’ve somehow found a way to plug-and-play linebackers in with huge success. Their ability to stop the run has affected the passing game of opposing teams and the Cards’ secondary is seriously talented. The frustrating part is their QB situation. I have no faith in Drew Stanton. Zero. As good as the defence is I think that Arizona need to get more out of Stanton than just game management to be successful.

I actually think that the Arizona victory of San Fran told us more about the 49ers than it did about the Cardinals. I had the Bay Boys pegged as potential NFC reps in the Superbowl, forget that.

The Cardinals have been great to start the season but by week 16 I think they’ll be scrapping for a wildcard spot. Even 10-6 seems too high for them if Palmer is out for longer than a month.

Cardinals soaring, but will it last?

Great article Simon. Was a top afternoon out at Langlands, doesn’t get much better than perfect sunshine, $4 cans and a massive crowd. Next week’s GF should be a cracker.

I have to agree with Scott Woodward too; Cam Munster looks to be some player. Certainly wouldn’t be out of place in the 1 for the Storm in the future.

Tigers blowout Wynnum to advance to Queensland Cup final

I agree Simmo, it was a tough call. With the Seattle 12th man in full voice I don’t think the Broncos will have it easy. But last week San Diego showed that you can move the chains on the Seahawks over the middle and Peyton Manning is still Peyton Manning. I think it will come down to who has the ball in the final two minutes of the game.

Which way are you leaning in that NFC West matchup? Drew Stanton inspires little to no faith in me, no matter how good the dirty birds’ D is.

Big Dawg's Dodgy NFL Tips Week 3

Right you are Jared. The old CFL man Freshman is who I meant. Must’ve had Chip Kelly on the brain.

Is Manuel starting for Buffalo though? I thought the mail was that Orton had been brought in and would go. Not sure it makes much difference who is under centre for this Bills team unfortunately…

Manly will win the NRL premiership this season

Allanthus, that is a classic.
Clearly Mr Mallard understood that it was his patriotic duty as Minister for Sport to lead the country in celebrations following the All Black’s win!
I’m sure that the following week when the AB’s lost to Australia he was also stoic enough to take it on the chin and do his national service again by leading the country in commiserations before trying to catch a train home to New Zealand.
Sounds like an upstanding Member of Parliament if you ask me.
