Agree on both points. Can’t recall seeing Hamish Stewart run that far before. He’s kind of in the Kyle Godwin mould for me – solid not spectacular, can’t ever see him going on to higher honours, but is doing a job for now.

The Wrap: Leadership vacuum sucks life out of the Rebels

Apart from Reds getting the win (and the impressive BPA try), highlight of the round for me was the emergence of the new super-efficient TMO (Brett Cronin?) who had already reviewed events by the time they were referred.

Always runs a great line. The last second change of angle before catching the ball on one of his tries was textbook hole running.

Eight talking points from NRL Round 13

Oh Dear! Form Wallabies XV just got turned on it’s head. Maddox, Gordon, Ramm, Dempsey and Hooper were outstanding.

Waratahs crush Reds in rout

With Kerevi departing, Wilson is firming as as my new favourite player to watch (must be Red, Daugunu close second). Despite that, 8 is one of the few spots where we have a deserving incumbent. Great opportunity for Wilson to learn from the bench. Also mistakenly omitted Valetini from the wider squad.

The Wallabies: Picking a side on Super Rugby AU form

I’ll have a crack:
1. James Slipper
2. Folau Fainga’a
3. Allan Alaalatoa (c)
4. Lukhan Salakaia-Loto
5. Matt Philip
6. Liam Wright (vc)
7. Michael Hooper
8. Isi Naisarani
9. Joe Powell
10. James O’Connor
11. Marika Koroibete
12. Irae Simone
13. Tevita Kuridrani
14. Tom Wright
15. Dane Haylett-Petty

16. Brandon Paenga-Amosa
17. Scott Sio
18. Taniela Tupou
19. Trevor Hosea
20. Harry Wilson
21. Tate McDermott
22. Matt Toomua
23. Jordan Petaia

Have selected from current SRAU players only, injury status ignored. A few old heads (Hooper, Toomua, DHP, Sio) there for experience but on notice. To be fair on Hooper, culpable or not, he has carried a heavy burden during the Cheika era, a break from the captaincy will do him more good at Wallaby level. Seriously though about Jono Lance for Toomua, but lack of versatility worked against him. Hard to comment too much on fringe forwards due to my own lack of familiarity, particularly with Rebels and Force. Jordan Uelese, Harry Johnson-Holmes, Angus Bell, Dane Zander, Fraser McReight, Pete Samu, Lachlan McCaffrey all have positives. Locks will require taking a punt on one or more youngsters. In the backs Noah Lolesio, Will Harrison, Hunter Paisami, Filipo Daugunu, Reece Hodge, Tom Banks, Jack Maddocks. Half-back is shallow, but Nic White will be back soon enough.

Agreed PK. As the saying goes, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Of course, in a physical game like rugby, it’s the ability to be good enough week to week, under pressure, and when being targeted by the opposition. IMO, the young candidate also has to be “enough” better than his competition that he is given leeway to make the mistakes of inexperience. I don’t think Wilson meets this requirement when compared to Isi just yet. But perfect opportunity for him to learn from the bench. We are clearly in the midst of generational change in Aus rugby, with most of Cheika’s stalwarts moving on, the potential of last year’s U20s and general absence of young veterans ready to take the next step. Rennie has to blood some youngsters.

Dear Australian rugby: Cool your jets. Love, Australian rugby

Don’t necessarily agree that he deserves a shot, but I think, for the most part, players get a clean slate under Rennie. If he thinks they are deserving, then I am happy to judge them on their performance within a Rennie system.

Kerevi also had the confidence (and the coach’s blessing?) to jump into first receiver at the reds last year – as a distributor rather than a crash-ball runner – which more often then not led to positive plays in the opposition half. His role in the WBs backline was clearly different. His form was certainly down for the WBs and he copped a lot of criticism for being a ball hog. I wonder how much of it was to do with his comfort level in the WB system. Despite consistently being named a VC, he never seemed to play with the same freedom in the WBs as at the Reds. Big loss for Oz rugby.

Reds look the goods in pre-season trial

NB, your clips of the English line out choreography are a thing of beauty. Is it something they have regularly used over the last couple of seasons, or was it specifically unveiled for an AB ambush?

Whiteout! How selection confidence helped England beat the All Blacks

Reminds me of Peter Ryan, shoulders made for tackling and a distinctive crouch and drive technique. Underhill probably has an extra 15kg on him tho.

Whiteout! How selection confidence helped England beat the All Blacks

More so than the pool stage card blitz, watching players (attack and defence) strafe into the ruck without sanction has been my refereeing peeve of the tournament.

Whiteout! How selection confidence helped England beat the All Blacks

Kerevi slipped into first receiver a lot for the reds this year, showing some sense of ball playing. The guy is capable, I just don’t think this part of his game was encouraged or worked on in the wallabies set up. Massive loss to Australian rugby.

The Wrap: Good coach, bad coach; the winning (and losing) of the World Cup

I overreached on the comment about the refereeing. I really thought the Wallas were going to overcome Romaine, which would have made a victory so much sweeter. Alas, not to be, but still a phenomenal game of Rugby.

Wales withstand Wallabies' second-half fightback

Thought the winger’s jump into a high tackle on Naisarani deserved a yellow. Especially after the Kerevi fend farce.

Final nail in coffin for Foley’s Wallabies career.

For a wallabies fan

Wales withstand Wallabies' second-half fightback

Most enthralling game of rugby since 2003 final. No hyperbole. The drama was phenomenal. Yes, some of it down to refereeing, but it’s why I love the game! The clinical welsh control in the first 30 followed by 40 mins of wallabies dominance. I feel like the wallabies missed a trick not going for line out again when they opted for plenty kick. One more infringement would have put a Welshman in the bin. We would have been very likely to go up by a few.

Thanks Oliver for the fascinating and well researched article. It certainly seems like the US has the opportunity to make a big run up the rankings in the next decade.

How rugby could take off in America

Great advertisement for a top six finals system.

Unb-Eel-ievable! Parramatta blow away Broncos 58-0

AAC could have travelled as a guest coach if experience was required. No 3rd half could bite. Too important a position to not be immersed in the squad.

Wallabies name 31-man squad for 2019 Rugby World Cup

With Arnold rumoured to be out from a lingering hand injury, will be interesting to see who our third lock is. While Simmons is a technician he doesn’t have the grunt of the other three around the park. Could be an opportunity to move LSL to bench lock, but our six options are slim. If Pocock is fit and is played at six then we throw away the line out advantage.

Did the Wallabies pick the All Blacks lock?

Great post!

It's time for the real Beale to return

PK, this wasn’t directed specifically at you, it appears to be a common sentiment on the site. I may even have said it before!

It's time for the real Beale to return

Why are we talking about Banks as a winger? How many times has he played there?
