Here we go again, BiltongBek on his usual rant….. is what I thought when I read the subject line.

But then….

The Currie Cup will always have special place in the hearts of the SA rugby fan, at least, those of us more than 40 years old. There is absolutely no way I can get as worked up over, say, a Lions v Brumbies game as I did over a Transvaal v Northern Transvaal match in the old Currie Cup comp. While I enjoy watching Super rugby, I’m just not that emotionally invested in it. Especially in its current form.

I, for one, would love to have the CC restored to its former glory. It has lost its importance on the SA rugby calender due to Super Rugby and this is a travesty.

And to be honest, I don’t really believe that an SA withdrawal from S15 would have particularly disastrous effects on the SA international game. The Rugby Championship should ensure that the Boks keep up with current international trends and the RC games would be that much more eagerly anticipated.

The gloss has most assuredly started to fade from Super Rugby for me.

Time to resurrect the Currie Cup methinks. This new Super Rugby dispensation is both confusing and uninteresting.

Well done Biltong. A timely article.

Ditch Super Rugby and concentrate on the Currie Cup

Stickler?? A stickler is an obstinate, stubborn, truculent, pedantic lump. This is not how I’d like to see myself… 😉

I’m talking about form Mantis, not table position. They were assuredly the best team in the first half of the comp. Not any more though.

But I agree absolutely with your first assertion. I’d take an ugly win over the Crusaders any day of the week and twice on Saturdays.

‘Boring Brumbies’ is just lazy criticism

Hmmm, I’m pretty sure they’re not the best team in the comp at the moment. That honour goes to the Crusaders imo.

The Sharks are a stodgy team without Patrick Lambie at the helm and he’s out for another two weeks or so.

Hi Harry

Just casting back (in a lazy sort of way), these are the players that stand out:

NZ – Christian Cullen
Oz – Campese
SA – Morne du Plessis
Arg – Hugo Porta
Fr – Jean Pierre Reeves
Wal – Phil Bennet
Eng – Jonny Wilkinson
Ire – Keith Wood
Sco – Andy Irvine

As far as the current players are concerned…… These are the guys I love to watch:
Oz – Quade Cooper (Sublime skill)
NZ – Corey Jane (So tough to bring down)
SA – Willie Le Roux (who else!!! The most exciting current player)
Arg – Gonzalo Comacho (Similar Player to Jane)
Wal – George North (SH type player stuck in the stodgy Northern fields…)
Fr – None of them much……. maybe Dimitri Sarzewski
Ire – Robbie Kearney (Best current FB?)
Sco – No-one really….
Eng – Same…

Who is your favourite foreign rugby player?
