It feels like the ideal here is to have that second division where franchises can rise from and fall to, the question being whether or not support would be strong enough to support a second tier.

You’re spot on about the NPL, it’s growing at a rate of knots.

Sutherland Shire A-League side more fact than fiction

You’re bang on there, and it’s disappointing to say the least.

Sutherland Shire A-League side more fact than fiction

I’d love to see an Auckland team alongside a Wellington team. One side in NZ makes it seem like a novelty rather than a movement.

Sutherland Shire A-League side more fact than fiction

Would be preferable I’d say, but the powers that be don’t seem too keen to add teams just yet. A straight swap looks likely.

I’m a huge fan of having a super-over decide the Final should it end in a tie. Personally, I’d rather leave ties that occur throughout the group stages stand as a share of the points, but I realise you can’t have it both ways. As rare as ties are in the longer form of the game it definitely seems the right thing to do. End of the day, you can’t have joint winners.

Super Over to be employed if Cricket World Cup Final is a tie

Really thoughtful article, Paul. You raise some great questions, and there certainly is reason for concern. It is difficult to see a way to protect bowlers’ heads and faces with any sort of equipment without interfering with their action. No doubt there is risk associated with playing the sport, but as you say it should certainly not be ignored.

Bowlers face growing risk in modern cricket

Bang on about the Port Adelaide game mate. Typo, my mistake.

Swans to abandon ANZ Stadium in 2017

Bang on, Peter.

Fremantle's trading snooze: Sleeping giant or asleep at the wheel?

Absolutely, this isn’t an extensive list, just the one or two major boosts to be had. Unfortunately for Whitecross, despite what Clarkson said this week I don’t see a starting spot for him with Frawley now in the team.

Injured AFL stars set for return in 2015

Small correction: Brent Renouf has been delisted by Port Adelaide.

Injured AFL stars set for return in 2015

I do deliberately ignore excuses, yes. Excuses don’t win Premierships.

Collingwood's fall from grace sparks an identity crisis

Very true but some things are bigger than football. I think this qualifies.

Collingwood's fall from grace sparks an identity crisis

If Collingwood don’t allow Beams to leave and be with his sick father, then there are bigger cultural problems at the club than we think.

Collingwood's fall from grace sparks an identity crisis

In right of reply:

1) Rebuilding 2 years after a Premiership? If that doesn’t scream ‘fall from grace’ I’m not sure what does. Grundy (pick 18) looks the goods but may have to play 2nd fiddle to Witts after looking a walk-up first choice. Kennedy (pick 19) is a small forward that kicked 4 goals in 8 games. Average. Broomhead (pick 20) played the first 8 games of his career this year, looked okay not great against all but GWS. Jury remains out.

2) Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Collingwood finished 11th.

3) Agreed, certainly not a straight-swap. He spent a lot more time down back in his five games at the Pies than he did at either Sydney or Adelaide. Shaw’s departure left them searching for run off HB so I can see the logic. He could be dangerous on the wing or at high half forward, particularly in his time at the Swans. In fairness it’s a relatively new position for him, but I find it hard to comprehend the recruitment of Armstrong as injury cover at all considering that was his role at the Swans.

4) This I will agree with you entirely on. He joined in Jolly’s last year so the Pies may have hoped they could call upon him if needed in the big games.

5) They were injured yes. This time it is through no fault of their own (or Buckley’s or anyone’s) that their careers are set back. I attribute none of Collingwood’s fall to those two individually, but having such high draft picks be unable to play in their first season for whatever reason would be bitterly disappointing. Keep in mind what Paul Roos says time and time again about the expectations of first year players. While they can contribute, they shouldn’t be relied upon to perform week-in-week-out.

Collingwood's fall from grace sparks an identity crisis

I think the point you made about player expectations is bang on. Swan is a champion footballer, but he’s not going to win the Brownlow every year. The same goes for Pendlebury. I just feel the club is ignoring their slide and justifying it as a one-off underperformance.

Collingwood's fall from grace sparks an identity crisis

At the end of the day the buck (no pun intended) stops with the head coach. The main problem I feel is that the club isn’t sure if they are rebuilding or not. Some people in the comments believe they’ve been rebuilding since their Premiership win, while others say they haven’t started yet. Uncertainty is hurting the club, and they need to work out where they’re at pretty soon.

The way I see it is that the club is about to enter a rebuilding phase perhaps a year late.

Collingwood's fall from grace sparks an identity crisis

Never heard of them.

In all seriousness the article is about Frawley, not the Cats. Of course he may join Clark at Geelong or a number of other clubs, but it’s far from settled at the moment.

Gone! James Frawley walks away from rebuilding Demons

Well written Daniel! Agree in every part.

Year one of the Buddy era was a success

Thanks Julian!

Absolutely a class CB like a Hummels or even Vermaelen would launch United right up in my books. You’re right and it is certainly far too early to judge Van Gaal, and United being United they are well and truly in the title race.

Couldn’t agree more Rhys. ANZ is a rubbish location and an average-at-best stadium. Sure it has the capacity, but home ground should be home ground.

The SCG and September should be synonymous for the Sydney Swans

Absolutely their signings have been reasonably good. I just found it too much to pass them after having the guts ripped out of them. When it come to winners and losers of the window, I think Southampton lost out big time, but that’s not to say the new guys won’t step up. Tadic certainly looks like a gem.

Club Grades: 2014 EPL Summer Transfer Window

That’s a fair point about United. I gave them a Pass knowing it may be a bit of an understatement, but I couldn’t go higher since it seemed to me that they didn’t sign what they needed. Of course Di Maria, Falcao, Herrera etc. would make any team better, but I still feel the backline was the biggest loser from this window.

Bang on about Agger too.
