Here’s the thing: that should not be acceptable in any way. If the referee has had a tangible influence on the outcome of the game, then the referee has completely and utterly failed in their role as an impartial judge on the pitch. If a referee does make as basic and obvious an error as what happened on the weekend, they should be held accountable and called out for it. They’re professionals, so an expectation of competence should in no way be seen as unreasonable or unrealistic, nor should incompetence be the expected standard. The final result should come down to skill and luck, not how bad at their jobs the referees are. As much as they’re human and they make mistakes, there nevertheless needs to be a transparent system of accountability when they commit errors that are as egregious as the ones that came up.

The Blues best ever Super XV

Cotter doesn’t start until around July or whenever it was that the current season of the T14 finishes. Scott Johnson will remain in the Scottish set-up as Director of Rugby, overseeing the entirety of Rugby in Scotland (presumably the two Pro 12 sides primarily, then the various domestic leagues within Scotland, starting with the Scottish League Cup and working downwards from there).

Six Nations 2014 preview: Scotland

Personally, I would prefer a the referees use every tool at their disposal in order to ensure they’re making the right call more often than not than to have a game decided by shoddy refereeing.

The only thing I would add would be a set time limit, decided by vote by the refereeing panel, preferably by at least 2/3 majority.

TMO review: Is there clear and obvious forward progression?

Wayne Smith was a first five-eighth and a fine one at that back in the day.

Smith versus Jones: rugby's surname face-off

I think you mean Aaron Smith, not Tawera Kerr-Barlow. I’d also rate Fumiaki Tanaka, Connor Murray and an in-form Will Genia ahead of Francois Hougaard.

Quite a few players have failed to pick up Super Rugby contracts that probably deserve it – case in point Ihaia West, who was excellent for Hawke’s Bay last year and started the Maori All Blacks games against Canada and the USA, but was overlooked for the initial Super Rugby squads.

Australia needs to go back to three Super Rugby teams

A lot of the lack of depth in Australian rugby is borne out of a lack of a feeder competition between the club level and Super Rugby level. The ITM Cup in New Zealand may not be bringing in the crowds or ratings that it used to, but it’s performing exceptionally in its capacity as a feeder competition to the Super Rugby teams and the same can be said about the Currie Cup. That the All Blacks and Springboks have much a much deeper talent pool than the Wallabies is no accident.

Removing a Super Rugby franchise will not fix things, and will only paper over the cracks in Australian rugby – at best.

If I were a Wallaby coach and both were available, I’d have Betham in ahead of O’Connor any day of the week. O’Connor is way too much of a liability and he’s not worth the off-field baggage that he brings with him.

Simon Shaw was also playing regularly until he was in his late 30’s. Matfield, on the other hand, hung up his boots and called it a career once. He may be good enough to be a regular at the Bulls and make the Boks, but these kinds of stories usually end in disappointment.
