Maybe the low scoring is due to the shortened quarters in 2020, but there has been a decline in scoring over the years. Something has to change to bring back the quick, risky and exciting footy. A couple of radical/ controversial thoughts:
(1) 16 players on the field at any one time with 6 on the bench (unlimited interchanges = fresh legs) plus opens up the ground
(2) exclusion zones around all ruck contests, forcing the ball to be tapped within a less congested area
(3) once the team score gets to 80, each goal is worth 9 points (or you reintroduce the 9 pointer for outside 50 shots from first bounce)
(4) somehow promote 1:1 footy – get rid of the zones (thanks Clarko…not)

How an old NBA rule could boost AFL scoring rates

Excellent article, Les. The AFL needs to understand umpiring is critical to the game and ensure the rules are simple, understandable to players and officials alike with minimal grey areas, and easily enforceable. Therefore, they need to spend time to review and implement solutions over the off-season. Holding the ball, holding the man, striking, head high tackles, kicking in danger, ruck infringements, and ‘intentional’ out of bounds are all problem areas, many of which can adversely impact the flow, and potentially, result of the game. They’ve got some work to do…

Umpiring is broken in the AFL. Why can't we talk about it?

I would say there is midfield depth – outside the guys who have played in that role each week (Cripps, Curnow, Murph, Setters, Martin, Walsh) we have Kennedy, Stocker, Dow, O’Brien, Philp: they need more time to develop though, minimal game time for most (Kennedy has had a few games this year, Dow last year but not so much this year until now). As mentioned in other articles and feedback, a couple of experienced defensive mids would be handy acquisitions in the off-season. There are a few free agents who would fill this void.

Carlton shouldn't rush their veterans out the door

Getting rid of Charlie? Surely you jest. He and McKay are the future of our forward line. Harsh on Dow – needs to be given more of a chance to prove his worth. With Charlie, Marchbank and Newman back next year, the side will look better. Throw in youngsters Silvagni, Honey, O’Brien, Stocker and Kennedy (last 2 are the big bodies to help Crippa, Murph, Martin and Curnow). More development in Cottrell, and TDK plus Fisher, Newnes and Setters getting more settled, and retire a few if the older guard (make room for talented youngsters =!tough decisions). Establishment of a game plan that works for this team (fast, play on and up the corridor), let’s see how that looks. Get some experienced assistant coaches to help Teague. Teague should run with that game plan for the last 3 games.
