Clear, demonstrative dissent, aggression or abuse towards umpires should be stamped out.

This is such a stupid subjective rule…let’s say a player is tackled….HTB…and they get up shaking their head. Abuse! Dissent! Or instead it might be the player remonstrating with themselves perhaps regretting not disposing sooner.

Great article- couldn’t agree more

Dissenting dissent: Why the masses are in uproar about the AFL’s controversial new rule

I hate all this. The AFL is a contact sport. Ban players who are malicious or reckless. Punishing players for accidents or perfectly legal footy acts doesn’t undo a concussion. At best it will see players unsure how to approach a loose ball and within 5 years it will be touch footy. Surely the AFL’s obligation to provide a safe workplace needs to be seen in context – the duty of care in a white collar office will rightly be different to a worksite or a mine where the types of hazards and intrinsic risks are not the same? Surely?

AFL full of hypocrisy and mixed messages on concussion

Too soon to write off Richmond- but I do wonder whether the Swans victory gives other teams a template to now follow (noting that having a plan and being able to execute it are two different things). I also expect Richmond will tweak how they defend

Is this a watershed moment for the Richmond era?

All of these year on year rule changes are a nonsense. It is tinkering and like previous years, won’t magically “fix” scoring or the type of play. The AFL is once again confusing the map with the territory.

The real problem in my view is that a sufficient number of AFL coaches pursue game styles that attempt to minimise being scored against – they are paid and incentised to win matches. I’m yet to see a coach suffer proper career ending repercussions for consistently “winning ugly”. But how many clubs and fans will reward their coaches for regularly losing pretty.? Answer is zero. And worse, senior coaches know that regular beltings and blowouts in the name of a more attractive game style will precipitate an untimely exit. If the AFL thinks the game is ugly and dour they need to deal with the core issue (coaching mindset) not keep on endlessly tweaking the rules. Coaches will just find new ways (as they have in previous years of rule tweaking) to play defensive minded footy.

AFL rule changes to combat defensive play

Buddy and Reid are injury prone key forwards- I agree that picking up Daniher next year could just be rinse and repeat. I don’t care how talented you are – if you are watching on from the injury rooms your capacity to be a match winner = zero percent. As a Swans fan I hope we look for a different approach that goes beyond trying to buy in a star full forward (or at least if we do, let’s target someone else who is a better prospect of getting on to the park in 2021). Daniher doesn’t seem to have been physically right for quite some time

Four burning questions for Sydney ahead of the AFL restart

Coaches and players have an incentive to win, not necessarily to play a brand of attractive or TV friendly footy. Having read a bunch of comments it seems there’s no consensus on what makes a watchable match. So do you want a free flowing open style or does the man on man contest still matter? Personally I want a bit of both. I’m not sure there’s any one way to “fix” the game – teams and coaches will look to play a style of footy that delivers wins. An ugly win or a pretty win both deliver 4 points

AFL media misses the point, yet again
