A Hawthorn supporter from birth, where it’s said one of my first words was 'Buckenara’, where the clubs tribulations of the 90’s and the playground taunts formed the man I am today. An avid Union fan since 2003, and now Rebels fan, but still a lot to learn of the game, and an Australian approach to cricket.

What? You’re saying that the side with the third lowest points against tally for two-years running needs to find a defence?

James Worpel will propel Hawthorn to a new level

Interesting article, and from my Hawks perspective, you can’t go past Buddy. But one name that did come to mind was Josh Kennedy… in the long run going to Sydney was better for him than staying at the Hawks, but he’d have been quite handy to have around.

This article did make me think of a reversal of the question: “which player would have wanted to stay” and Brett Deledio comes straight to mind

Which player would your club want back?

That’s far too punitive. Which would only be at the expense of clubs being able to put on entertaining footy and the AFL negotiating better broadcast agreements in the future

Time to kill off the AFL rookie list

but… who gives a toss about these medals?

It’s a bit like the Brownlow for me. The AFL implement all these random changes, and then the umpiring of those rules is so pathetic; entrusting the nomination of the fairest and best in their view is meaningless.

This award was created by CA in an attempt to get some more airtime in an otherwise crowded market

Warner's win means it's time for an Allan Border Medal rethink

Technically speaking, GWS were embarrassed in a grand final, whereas Essendon weren’t… so there’s that

Champion Data have released their 2020 list rankings and we have many, many questions

I think that’s the point with them isn’t it; player vs player stats… I’m guessing the Champion Data stuff’s intended audience is the fantasy football people and not for the regular fans of the game who are keen to see how their team compare to the rest of the comp

Does North really have the second best midfielders in the league?

Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorn had the three lowest points against tallies for 2019 at 1462, 1601, and 1602… yet their defenders are ranked 16th, 4th, and 10th.

There’s been a lot of talk about Merrett lifting after having the leadership role taken away from him: do you reckon there’s much in that?

Essendon 2020 preview: The Bombers won't be flying upwards in 2020

You might have a bit of a point there, I’m sure Furbank would be glad to have his debut behind him… but I wonder how much of the Sarries situation is having an effect? There were a couple of uncustomary handling errors from Farrell and Itoje had a bit of a shocker too. I also thought losing Tuilagi early didn’t help either.

But France played so well, there were a couple of defensive efforts on the try line that showed real grit, and a couple of times there where they pushed England back.

On the refereeing, don’t get me started… why do all feed-ins at the scrum go under the chest of the flanker and not in the tunnel? Why do none of the ruck infringement get called in anything but an arbitrary way? Why are numbers/channels/throw-ins at the line-out properly policed…

No excuses for England: Jones

I disagree with your definition of pay… you can pay someone a visit… and it pays to keep on the good side of some people… it is not exclusive to money.

I certainly agree with your full home and away comment though, but it’s not easy when grounds, especially the MCG, are shared with cricket.

A Briton's perspective on the problems plaguing AFL

I know this is a bit of an aside to the article, but I hate that hardly any of the clubs have the club logo on the front of their guernseys, but the AFL logo is prominently displayed on each one.

Friday's jumper clash was a long time coming

I was having a look at the AFL app yesterday to refresh myself on the path of the finals and was confused to read that the first preliminary final will be played second, and the second preliminary final will be played first.

To the losers go the spoils

How much do you think the pitches have played in this? Given that he’d be looking to take wickets late as the pitch deteriorates, he was not given that in the second test and the third test was over on the fourth day. The first test went according to type and he took six in the second innings.

GOAT cheese: Have England worked Lyon out?

How do you figure that he’s been better because of Ross? You could argue that he was a good player in a great team which made his arrival in a poor side look better, hence winning the Freo B&F in his first year?

With Coniglio off the market, where do the dominoes fall?

I’ve been souring on the draft for a while now. I feel that there is too much pressure and expectation on those who are selected in the top 10-20. I also think far too much stock is placed on things like the combine. What it does to these kids is that it means they almost have to break into their side in their rookie year and they dont have the chance to grow into the team.

Just thinking about the draft Jono O’Rourke comes to mind; second pick in the 2012 draft but did nothing at both the Giants and the Hawks. Maybe the same can be said for O’Mera? I dont think he has the game and the leadership skills expected of a high profile first pick either. Then look across the comp and players like Petraca are the same.

For me, as a Hawks fan, I’m happy with the list policy they have, bringing up lesser ranked draft picks and toping up with experienced talent.

Will the ageing Hawks finally hit the draft?

I really agree with this article, thank you. I guess the one thing we mustn’t lose sight of is that the administration of the league can’t be left to the clubs, this structure is needed. It’s the power AFL House wields that is the problem.

This might be a bit small-minded, but on-topic, I hate that the AFL logo is so prominent on the team uniforms, so much so that some sides like the Dogs don’t even have their badge on the guernsey. I hate that even here on the Roar, all the sports’ tabs are named after the sport, except Aussie Rules, which is AFL.

Why the AFL is bad for Australian rules football

“In Italy, it’s ‘Fanta-sia’. Guess where we live? Australia, and we call it ‘Fan-tay-sha’,” Taylor explains. We don’t pronounce Italian names in Australia in the full Italian way. We pronounce it with the Australianism in it, and that’s how we’ll continue to do it.”

Maybe racist is a bit extreme, but it’s highly ignorant for a commentator. He was told how to pronounce it correctly, he says the above quote meaning that the Australian way is superior; that could be classified as racist. But you can’t call dog-whistle rhetoric.

Just say his name right, BT

But, Fantasia IS an Italian/Latin word!

The ‘guess what, we’re in Australia and we pronounce it with an Australian-ism’ is such a BS line, in fact I’d go as far as to say racist… In Australia do we pronounce zucchini as Italians do i.e. zoo-kee-nee, or do we pronounce the ‘ch’ as in zoo-chi-nee? And on that, in the morning do we order a cappa-keen-o, or cap-pu-chi-no? Don’t get me wrong, the overly pronounced rolling R’s you hear some do in Italian restaurants can be a bit too much, but I’d rather hear someone having a go.

What really grinds my gears is hearing people mispronounce Italy as Iddaly… and I bet that’s how BT would pronounce it

Just say his name right, BT

I think you’ve missed the point here Ben… Izzy is displaying a form of extremism via his religion. And it’s not hate directed by the church as you allude too, it’s his ignorance of his religion and his world view that’s the problem. The church is clear about not judging others, i’s not for Izzy to make judgement on who is admitted into heaven or not. The church espouses love for each other and to pray for each other.. not posting junk on social media.

Izzy, you're a complete...

come off it… he was removed as Chairman in 2002. That’s a poor excuse.

Brendon Bolton and Stephen Silvagni are dead men walking at Carlton

This comment perfectly sums it up:

The amount of opportunities wasted in front of goal due to lack of confidence or lack of ability is at the heart of the issue.

I have been thinking recently that the quest for athleticism is outweighing those with footy skills for too long. Would the likes of Plugger, Dunstal or Diesel Williams get a shot in this day?

A rule change was never the answer to AFL's goal-kicking woes

you allude to what I have thought during this; there are plenty of passages in the bible saying that you shouldn’t judge others, but this is precisely what Folau is doing, he’s judging others. Perhaps, instead of posting nonsense online, he can prey for those whom he thinks are in peril?

Folau speaks for the first time since sacking announcement

It’ll be interesting to see how the Tiges deal with their injuries…. they’ve been pretty fortunate the last couple of years with few injuries compared to other clubs. I think they have the depth, but it’ll be interesting to see how Hardwick coaches around this and see if he really is a good coach or just a lucky one.

Thursday's great game exposed the genius of Alex Rance

I’m with you, to say that he did it to fit in is a bit weird. Surly getting putting your head down and getting the job done will elevate you in the team.

My real issue is though, if you take this need to its natural conclusion, what if he was approached by someone who’s looking to fix a game?
