With all due respect to Thorn, and while there is no doubt of his mentoring skills and the courage of his convictions has instilled a strong and ethical culture at Ballymore, I’d consider Jim McKay the coaching brains who has provide the polish behind the Reds resurgence.
Their combination is proving highly effective and I wouldn’t want to see it change, but for mine its drawing a long bow to suggest Thorn is at a level to coach a national side.

Is Brad Thorn our next Wallabies coach?

As a die hard Bears supporter, I’m of the strong opinion that the NRL must tread carefully when assessing the merits of expansion, particularly at the risk of merging or relocating the traditional / foundation clubs. From a personal perspective, the day Norths were banished from the NRL after the failed merger with Manly (one that was never ever going to work), I was lost as a supporter to the game. As much as I tried to back another horse, I could not replicate my passion I still have for the Bears having being born and bred in the area and following them since I was a boy. Many weekends at Bare Park up the old fig tree watching my team.

If you going to expand, provide the opportunity to an existing club and supporter base with history in local RL heartland, eg Ipswich in Qld. Don’t try and reinvent the wheel with developing a club from scratch in states that don’t have any personal investment or enthusiasm for the game. The Storm are an anomaly, and one case that I don’t believe can be replicated.

Quality, not quantity. Passion, not disconnection.

'Tis the season to be silly: Let's talk NRL expansion

Yes you’re correct Paul, but had to give him an honourable mention. One of the all time best lefties. Maybe he should have bat left handed…..was one of the worst RH no. 11s.

The best Test team of left-arm spinners

Derek Underwood??!

The best Test team of left-arm spinners

Jason Gilmore. Coached Churchie 1st XV at the time of Scott-Young, Ponga, Liam Wright, Perese, Hockings, Brodie Coft, Jaydn Sua, Harley Fox. Not a bad list!
He then went to the Reds as an assistant for 3-4 years.
