As a long time Laker fan, the fact they were able to pull this off AND keep Gasol is a fantastic result.

This is the second time since 2008 the Lakers have been able to pull off a trade that will probably deliver another championship- or even multiple titles.

It also goes to show that Houston’s offer must have been rubbish for Orlando to take what they did.

Aside from the size of the Lopez contract, that deal would have given the Magic 4 first round draft picks and cleared out those contracts- including Hedo.

I hope Hennigan has learned a lesson or two from this process.

Dwight Howard: Hollywood Bound

If Fremantle beat Adelaide this week they will go into the top 8. North Melbourne and Essendon are tied with the Dockers on 44 points and they play each other on Sunday, so regardless of the outcome, if Fremantle win they are in for now.

Not sure the Crows have been the in-form team of the year. A case could be made for the Swans.

Aside from West Coast, the Dockers have beaten the Western Bulldogs (home), Melbourne (away), GWS (home), Port Adelaide (away)- those game are good momentum and confidence builders against sides they were expected to beat but they don’t show if Fremantle have flicked the switch.

The win agaisnt the Eagles was the start, a win this week and Fremantle are going to be a fast rising team. In fact, if they get up this week I could see them winning their remaining 3 with the game against North Melbourne being the clincher into September.

The last game Fremantle lost was against Collingwood- and after a slow start, the Docker showed some resolve and makings of a team on the rise even though they lost.

This last half of the season has given them something to build on, if it’s not this year then 2013 should be a good one!

Has Fremantle finally hit a purple patch?

“Our players have come from leagues in various parts of the world (Spain, Australia, USA, Greece, Russia & Serbia) and will be relying on that famous Aussie spirit and grit to even come close to the far superior US team.”

Forget the Aussie spirit and grit, play some decent defense. Clog up the key and don’t let Durant have a field day on the perimeter.

Every nation competing at this level shows grit and spirit (maybe not the Nigerians the other night). Personally, I get a bit tired of it being used as a substitute for talent when it comes to Australians in sport.

Boomers and Opals to face USA basketball roadblock

Well said!

The league is improving year by year and has come a long way from a couple of seasons ago when they talked about putting it on hold for a year.

I’m a regular attendee of Wildcat games and the passion and atmosphere in that building is extraordinary- the stadium is also always at capacity.

I’m not suggesting the writer has implied this; however it seems that most people look at the NBL as dismal when compared to the NBA. The two can’t be compared for a million different reasons, but how many times have you heard “Compared to the NBA the NBL is awful”?

The NBL is different and one of the fastest leagues in the world!

Boomers and Opals to face USA basketball roadblock

You’re right, it doesn’t.

It’s also not written as a ‘developing story’ or ‘news breaker’ but just a reflective article with some different information than what appears in the other articles written for The Roar on the subject- which I’m sure is exactly what this site is about.

In all seriousness thanks for your comment. You read the article- and after all that is the point.

I look forward to reading news breaking sport stories from you on here in future!

Steve Nash leaves Phoenix for the Lakers

Other than appeasing the members and support base after what was probably the most surprising and embarrassing defeat in Port Adelaide history there was no reason to make this information public before the end of the season IF the reports are true and his fate was decided weeks ago.

Primus had a 2 year contract with the option of a third year if the club agreed to it- they should have let him coach out the season and then exercised their legal right not to pick up that option.

It seems to be the knee jerk reaction of clubs to sack the coach to appease the members and supporters- it shows the administration understands there is an issue and this is what they are going to do about it.

I’m not suggesting the Primus is a good coach or the right man for the job- but consistently changing coaches isn’t the way either. Pick your man and leave him in the seat for 5 years- that’s enough time to see improvement.

The exception to this is Fremantle- they made the decision to sack Mark Harvey because they thought that Ross Lyon was a better coach.

Why do we only blame the coach?

Good to see you read the first sentence! Well done!

I think the league likes to use the last week of the season to build momentum into the finals. Teams also like to build momentum heading in.

Having a week off with no games at all could kill some of the hype if potentially you finished the last round of the season on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait another 12 days before the first finals contest.

I’m sure the players from teams featuring in the finals would want to get straight out there and get on with it. Injuries and ‘general soreness’ are always going to be a part of sport, especially contact sports like AFL regardless of how many byes there are.

Sometimes it comes down to better injury management or just plain luck. We all know when the finals start, players should be managed accordingly.

I think your article raises a great point for discussion.

Bring in a one week break before the finals
