Possibly the Lions are just going to have to bide more time and develop their players through the academies, i think there is a couple on the horizon this year but it will take time, local players tend to stay at home more than WA boys ( for EX), who can play off going home in contract negotiations.

If we look at the last time they were successful the Lions had plenty of ‘ locals’ playing.

A Gold Coast win in this week's QClash will be a win for both clubs

Local Sydney councils in 1922 and code wars.

1903: When the football codes collided

True, the 1890’s gold rush put an end to that, the labour and expertise that shifted from the central Victorian Goldfields helped crush secessionist moves by WA and also led to Australian football becoming the dominant code, Albany was the initial drop off point followed by Fremantle and miners would by hand push barrows to Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie.

Prior to that AF was shaped in WA by WA men who were schooled in South Australia primarily at Prince Alfred College and bought footy back with them

1903: When the football codes collided

I note the photo ‘British Association Football ‘, untill quite recently i have seen signs at sports grounds stating the exact same thing, the game was called that primarily because the players who played the game were usually quite recently arrived migrants and they of course were primarily from the UK, it was also called that to differentiate itself from Australian football, the term soccer came later.

I also note that both codes of Australian football and soccer played at the sacred Birchgrove Oval before Rugby League even existed in this country.

Good article.

1903: When the football codes collided

Unless they have been tapered and are just about to hit their straps the Dockers are not playing like they were at the beginning of the year, i am not sold on either the Dockers or Eagles, but history tells us one of the top 2 teams will win.

Has Lyon held them back deliberately ?.

Can anyone stop an all-WA AFL grand final?

When you say ‘yes Conchie WE are as thick as bricks’ you should probably just talk for yourself, i am pretty sure most people understand that retired judges or practicing barristers etc would not compromise themselves or their career for the sake of a few footballers who may get a couple of weeks suspension.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Thats a fair point, it could be argued that at times the team has performed above itself, maybe as a bonding of us against them scenario, but since WADA appealed the team has been in a downward spiral, the wind knocked out of the sails.

You cant judge the player or the coaching staff on this, a clear run is the only way.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

No judge found Hird guilty of anything JAX, go back to watching SOA

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

They are not employed by AFL house Slane, where do you get this info from, they are independent judges.

Lazza ….. those judges took a legalistic POV.

Seriously this site needs a roll eyes icon.

To state the bleeding obvious ….YES THEY DID TAKE A LEGALISTIC POV.

FFS SERIOUSLY !!!!!

WADA and ASADA need to take a legal POV as well, you people are thick as bricks.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Exactly right Paul, it is OK to smear absolute vitriol over Hird, but look sideways at Goodes and you are gonski, it really seems like a double standard.

Go to any website and attacking Hird is condoned without fail.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

I agree with Hawkins, but he still has bad days.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Slane, bizarre comment, the original decision was by the AFL commission, the boys club, the decision to find Essendon players innocent was made by a independent panel of judges.

Sorry Slane but you appear to misunderstand what has happened here.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

The court of Wilson and Smith and the football court of we have never liked Essendon or Hird so lets run with it.

Any negative story about a big Melbourne team will always have 17 sets of club supporters onside.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Seriously grow up.

i guess judges, ex judges were prepared to forgo a lifes work for a couple of footballers, you reckon there might have been a free membership in it for them !

where is my roll eyes icon ?

worst comment of the day

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

The last 2 posts explain this saga quite well, it really is about club loyalties, the real truth of what happened is long gone and lost and a PR campaign by both sides has been ongoing.

Wouldn’t be at all suprised if Dank was giving the players placebos and pocketing the money he was meant to spend on legal supplements.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

You may be right, but how can a player with his football pedigree get through his junior career, TAC cup as well as private school football have a technique that is not already up to scratch ?.

I have found with kicking, you either have it or you don’t, you either have good goal sense or you don’t.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

All i can say is insurance companies will fight all the way even in water tight claims, everyone has a story about insurance.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

To be fair i have always found AR quite fair, but on this matter i think his club barracking and perhaps his dislike for Hird may have blinded his opinions.

As we have seen in many instances the media can shape public opinion, even easier when the people taking an interest have probably hated Essendon since they could throw their rattle out of the crib, it takes SFA to get the tribal hatred burning.

Anyone would think barracking for different football teams that have grievances going back 150 years makes people think and claim unreasonable things !!

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

I understand they did not reject ASADA’s deal as they were not offered it, only current NRL players were, so here we are 12 months later after being SCN’s being handed out and nothing has happened.

Whatsmore the NRL media is very quiet about all this.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/cronulla-sharks/paul-aiton-no-clearer-on-asada-ban-as-former-sharks-teammates-return-to-the-field-20150129-131420.html

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Don, 17 current and ex Cronulla players were handed SCN’s, 12 were offered deals, those 12 were all current NRL players, the remaining 5 are either retired, playing locally and in the UK, they have heard nothing form ASADA and nothing has been done.

The 12 NRL players offered the deals were not entered either onto the register of finding either.

I have no idea, i do know when my missus got her bag stolen ( snatch and grab) and we knew we were covered it took a shed load of convincing insurance to pay out.

Totally ridiculous comparison but i am sure you get what i mean.

If insurance can skimp on anything they will

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

I have always thought a certain amount of blame should be apportioned to Hird, just not to the extent of a continued highly personal smear campaign that has endured for 3 years.

And i don’t think he should have been sacked, i think many of the real facts have been lost when things become highly personal and when this saga is played out along club lines by supporters of clubs that have been in suburban battles with each other for 150 years.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Well Bwuce you have on numerous occasions told us how you were a RL player of note in the Riverina and also told us how the AFL was destroying your favourite game down there.

It was just a simple question.

You are either upset or not ?.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Thats correct because disputing a insurance matter should stop him from coaching, in other news Hird should give up eating because it also interferes.

Every day matters should be all be put aside because of coaching, dare i say it but look what Phil Walsh was dealing with outside of coaching.

Have the Bombers Hird enough of James?

Well ATM it is very hard to tell if he can coach or not, has not a decent run at it for a number of years.
