What an outstanding game of footy. Both teams will be very sore after that one!

Raiders proved beyond doubt that they have the attitude and belief to go all the way. I’m unsure whether the raiders defence was outstanding or the storms attack was off. Either way it’s been a long time since I’ve watched a storm game and felt like they were out of options in attack.

The call was a bad one but I think the 2 minuets lost while The conversation was being taken was much worse for the storm. I thought the clock was stopped in the last 5 minuets of play? Maybe I’m wrong.

Six talking points from Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders NRL qualifying final

A great article mate!

I have wondered if the NRL is somehow benefiting from the current unhappiness of its fans and that’s why they allow it to continue.

This brings me to a crazy thought… maybe the NRL has found their own anti-vaxers? Rage bait (the evolved form of click bait) has been proven to be the most effective way to increase traffic on social media. Any anti-vax or cyclist riding in the middle of the road article gathers much more views and engagement through people arguing amongst themselves. Are the referee’s doing the same for the NRL?

How much of the media and media deals revolve around website traffic? Are there any posts with more engagement on the NRL socials than ones that revolve around contentious decisions? How many articles, comments, views and clicks have been accumulated just on this site around the discussion of refereeing standards?

Of course this is just a though and one the I hope isn’t real. But the level and depth of inconsistency does make me wonder!

Fans should stop wasting their time asking the NRL to lift their game

I couldn’t agree more about chambers. Was once labeled the best defensive centre in the game but there is no way he can be called that after his last 2 origin series. 8 missed tackles is out of control.

His attack is even worse, he blew so many opportunities and constantly gets run down by the back rower! I would hate to play outside him

Why Origin 3 wasn’t Mitchell Pearce’s redemption

The cattle play but it’s what’s in their hearts and minds that makes the difference. This is shown by the difference in Qld from game 2 to game 3. I feel like it’s back to the usual origin program pre dynasty. The blues with the better players and Qld’s “meat and potatoes” fighting to prove otherwise. Qld showed that fight and learnt a very valuable origin lesson in not switching off. They’ll be better next year and the blues will really believe they can win it.

The Maroons had the passion but not the cattle

Out of interest, does the missed tackle stat include the ones where he didn’t lay a hand on them?

That is a great stat analysis, I have a feeling (and this is just my guess really) that as Boyd’s form has dropped more teams kick to him rather than the wingers, padding his meters.

The one thing he’s been doing consistently this year that really gets to me is when running the out the back play if he doesn’t have a clear centre or winger to hit he just stops running and turns back in field. The threat of our fullback running through a hole has become nonexistent and teams know that if caught in a 3 on 2 the winger stays out because Boyd is only looking for the pass. It looks gutless, like he doesn’t want to get tackled.

I really hope Boyd gets his mojo back for himself but a captain he is not at the moment. He’s not the only reason the Bronco’s a playing so poorly but he’s definitely part of the problem

Reckon Darius Boyd's stats prove he's in terrible form? That's where you're wrong

I agree that on the basis of that game all of the new players had great games and that Fittlers coaching was a lot better. But that’s about as bad of an origin performance by Qld or any any origin team I’ve ever seen. I would say it wasn’t an “origin” game. Qld handed that game to them on a platter and Nsw’s executed brilliantly, there is no doubt in that.

Brad Fittler’s response to the doubters and critics: What, me worry?

I don’t know if he did though Emcie. I guess that’s a matter of opinion, and the opinion that matters a lot more than mine is those who select the team haha

He doesn’t have the punch through the line run of big boppers like Haas, Vaughan or Klemmer and he doesn’t have the ground speed and fitness of smaller props. He used to have damaging defence but since he got suspended for those high shots that’s gone on the way side too.

He may just be searching for his spark again, but there isn’t much fire in his game anymore. In the first game it seemed that Kevvy said “i’ll give you 10 minuets either side of half time, just go like crazy” and to that effect he did his job. But lay a platform and hold down the middle is something I don’t really see happening in his game at the dogs let alone origin level

Queensland Maroons player ratings: Origin 2

A fair assessment. Napa isn’t an origin forward. Ever since the shoulder charge went Napa has gone down hill. I thought Fafita was better than a 4. Hard to give anyone above a 6 after that team performance

Queensland Maroons player ratings: Origin 2

Jake got it right? I can agree with that. 74 minuets in the middle, not only that but a lot of ball playing and super solid in defence. I’m always happy to see a forward get it, Tom was amazing but also was on the end of the teams great work, lead by his brother in the middle

NSW Blues dominate Queensland in Game 2 to force State of Origin decider

Well played NSW’s. That was a hard game to watch, but the score line is what we deserved. Teddy and Tom T and Cook have a great future for the blues. They carved us up last night.

Not to take anything away from the Blues but man did we play horrible.
You say that we were in it in the first half but I would disagree. Everything was severely lacking in QLD’s game. The first try, no effort from anyone to get back and support. Second try the line moves up, Munster stands pretty much still and leaves a yawning gap for Maloney to pass into. We score, we knock on on tackle 2 after points. Stupid penalties (attacking the legs, escorting) all at pivotal parts of the game. You can do that shit in origin.

I hate ragging on players but Napa is not an origin forward. Ever since the shoulder charge got banned his game has been on a slow down hill trend. He especially isn’t a front row partner for Papalii. We got taught a lesson last night and that one hurts. I can’t remember a game of origin where one team gifted the game more than this one and NSW’s had the skill and class to execute

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 2

I find this really interesting! I though that of the 9 series won from 0-1 more would have been sealed with the home ground advantage. Just one more little later to the strangeness of the origin beast!

The Blues will have to defy history to defeat the Maroons in 2019

Great article Tim!

One more stat I would like to know in this theme is how many times has the team that has won from 0-1 played the 3rd game at their home ground?

This all makes for great reading as a Queenslander but once again, I smell a rat! We’re definitely massive underdogs in this one and our backs are up against the wall! Haha

The Blues will have to defy history to defeat the Maroons in 2019

This will be a great game. NSW’s will have desperation behind them and won’t be playing against home crowd advantage as well. They’ve definitely gone for a strategy change, taking a big back line to increase early tackle meters comes with risks of out of position players and a shortened amount of time to build combinations.

As a Queenslander I’m really worried about Napa starting. I think cook will get at least on line break on him late in his first stint. Napa really needs to be smart and efficient, which isn’t really his style. Add to that hunt playing in the middle and Papalii (another bigger slower guy) our starting middle is definitely weaker without Arrow.

Having said all of that, I think this will be Ponga’s match. This may be wishful Queenslander dreaming haha but watching him last game I saw a kid who was testing the waters with his abilities and is realising that a game of origin is not above him. I’m tipping him for a big one. QLD by 10!

2019 State of Origin: Game 2 preview

I’m sure he can make the tackles too. My question with him I’m centre is will he know when to shoot on the fullback coming round to make s 3 on 2 and will he know when to slide and wait for help to come across. Making this decision is why centre is considered one of the hardest positions to defend in. Like I said we’ll only know after the game!

Freddy missed a trick, but not the one you think

Mate, to say he’s good enough to defend as a true centre is a big leap. He may well be, and we’ll only know after the game, but a true centre in Mitchell showed that it’s not that easy to defend at centre. Is Wighton defending on the left? If so QLD will be licking their lips!

Freddy missed a trick, but not the one you think

I respectfully disagree with the Mitchell statement. I thought on Sunday he really showed that he doesn’t want to do the hard yards. After the criticism on him from origin I was fully expecting him to get his hands on the ball more and take some early hit ups coming out of trouble. 7 runs for 71 meters doesn’t show that. The kids a gun and I believe shouldn’t have been dropped but he definitely didn’t do everything in his power to get into the team.

Was that a collective sigh of relief we heard from Kevvie and Will after Latrell's omission?

As a Queenslander all of these questions around the blues is great. NSW’s could make a lot of changes or keep the same team, the result was strange in that way because both can be justified.

In my opinion NSW’s didn’t lack certain players in game one they lacked attitude. And maybe a home crowd cheering them on. In 2014 and 2017 NSW’s had the right attitude for origin and it showed. The blue wall was the perfect example of that. QLD showed that origin attitude, playing with passion and heart, right through the second half and NSW’s seemed to struggle to find it in themselves.

You could put any player you want in the team but if the mixture of heart, passion and attitude isn’t right well they’ll be pushing up hill. NSW’s have to win this next game which will hopefully for their sake bring that out in them. Bring on game 2!!

The five changes Brad Fittler must make for NSW to win Game 2

I think there is a really under appreciated DCE kick in the second half that QLD turned the game on. It was one of the few kicks to properly find the grass and they pinned them down that end for nearly 20 min after that

The three things that cost NSW victory

Napa’s stats do look bad. When I saw it live it looked a lot like Kevvy said to Napa you’ve got 10-15 min in the second half I want you to throw yourself at them. He was always coming from 2 or 3 players wide and cutting off their line making them come back towards the markers

Queensland win again because they're better at Origin
