Sorry i mean to say TEN not TNE. People arent watching.

The improvements needed to bring the A-Leagues back to prominence

The way it is going it is doubtful that the present contract with TNE/P+ will continue.

The improvements needed to bring the A-Leagues back to prominence

Does the very centric Melbourne Media have any Rugby League Reporters? The media doesnt have anything to say about Melbourne Storm yet they have over 20,000 to each of the two games so far this year. They are missing out on something here by not reporting the Storm.

The best try ever? Coates pulls off miracle in last minute to steal win from Warriors in stone cold classic

The AFL is a behemoth – a Business. The actual game is the product. AFL Incorp will do whatever it can to make it product look good. Do i blame them – not one bit. They have a great product. But they ddnt have four sellouts. GWS played in front of a lot of empty seats – a lot. The sydney Swans had 8000 empty seats. But thats not the issue – the crowds were pretty good. But AFL crowds are always pretty good because – seeing the game live is great I know i have done it. The TV / Fox audience is what matters. Did people watch in the non traditional markets for AFL in huge numbers. Where there raptures around the water coolers in the offices and schools i\on Monday. Same with the Storm in Melbourne they got 21000 with zero media coverage but what was there TV audience like. Where everyone goes wrong is yes the AFL covers a wide expanse of the country – but a lot of that is sand. Fish where the people are to catch fish. 52 percent of the people in this country live in NSW and QLD. The AFL knows that – they are working hard on those states. But inflating memberships etc isnt the way to go. My grandson touched a footy hes now a member i was told. The NRL had a huge opening round one (including Vegas) with 220,000 attending over the games. Not to be sneezed at. The games from Vega$ were a rating smash. The AFL knows what it has to do and is doing a good job with a great product. But you know what – the NRL is doing the same.

Heres one more thing – the NRL has generated a lot of publicity for their game., even here on the AFL tab its being spoken about.

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

The test will be the TV Ratings on Fox. Getting 40,000 to the Game is great. But its the TV audience that will be the real indicator. Same with AFL they can get 38,000 at a Swans game and 15,000 on TV.

Viva Las V'landys: Vegas party has started for the NRL but it is hard to tell if there's an American flavour ... yet

Oh please !

Your comment is spot on. The AFL things it has done a great thing with Round zero. Forget attendances at the games – the TV audience will be the metric to judge the AFL forray into Sydney etc. btw the Nrl has not deserted Sydney or Brisbane there are games on in those city’s. Matter of fact ticket sales to the Commbank game and suncorp game are doing very well. I like AFL but it dont like the way it thinks it can steamroller everything in its path. btw – a lot of their membership figures are very rubbery.

Well so far it isnt. So far its been amazing. Expecting 50,000 tix to be sold. Fox sports 1 is carrying the event live. My friends in Vegas are saying there are League jerseys everywhere.

Just checked out two morning newspapers in Vegas. The Las Vegas Sun – has a front page article on the NRL. The other leading paper there has a 10 top things to do in Vegas and advises one of them is going to the NRL Double header.
Not bad , not bad at all.

Well youv’e got to give credit where it is due. The Vega$ experiment looks like paying off with a big win for the NRL. Possibly 50,000 in attendance. On Fox 1. Thats where it will be known if it was successful. If the TV audience is there. If it is – then lookout…… This NRL season has generated so much publicity for the game itself that its amazing. The AFL might think it has outsmarted the NRL but i dont think so this time. Once again the metric for them will be the TV audience in Sydney and brisbane.

V'landys may as well be executive chair because he's doing both jobs but league needs to fix lack of female leadership

The season is too long now to be honest. Extending to 30 weeks wont work i dont feel. Starting in Winter would be better but then they are up against the AFL & NRL. Its a catch 22. The weeks leading up to the end of the year interest seems to wear off somewhat. Its a hard one. But something needs to be done. Crowds are miniscule for most part and TV audiences coudld fit in the phone box outside of channel TEN studios at Pyrmont. Heres a predictiojn – TEN wont renew but will go after the NRL when it comes up.

Should the A-Leagues follow the Japanese example and shift their seasons to winter?

28152 to be exact – that’s a very good crowd in relation to the rest of the A Leagues and shows their is potential. Sadly, when you look at the other games crowds are very low. More importantly we dont get a real picture of how many fans are engaging via TV etc. Well TV we know ratings are low on TEN. Paramount + doesnt say much which makes me feel they arent getting record number of people viewing the matches. TEN won’t renew if they dont get a return on their investment. I am not negative in saying that – simple Business. No one wants to think that TEN wont dump something if they feel they arent getting a return on their $. They are already the fourth placed network so their Add money is way down the list. AdvertIsing on TEN much cheaper than 7 and 9 because fewer watching. Positives – a good crowd last night.

Is a sold out Sydney derby the spark that sets the A-League alight?

The AFL is a well oiled machine they “own” the oxygen in Melbourne , Adelaide and Perth. The media in those markets don’t report on anything else much. I guess its up to the Governing Body to get behind their product and market the game. Channel TEN have a lot of issues – remember this is the Network which had just 12 people tune into a news program in Perth. I think the game needs to go back to SBS. TEN is in trouble and when the contract expires will be surprised to see them bid again. People need to support the game if not in person then on tv and streaming. The fact that TEN doesnt publish the figures says a lot.

There is only ever one 'must-see' fixture in the A-League Men each week

I mentioned to a friend who lives in Vega$ and he bought tickets. He looked a Youtube clip on the NRL and found it exciting. Theres more too this than just a double header. Will be interesting to see how this goes. Personally i hope it goes okay.

Las Vegas gamble a high-risk, low-reward play by NRL … the US couldn’t care less about your funny little game

If the AFL didnt try it then people would wonder “why”. Lets see how it goes. Interestingly of course is that both the SCG and Gabba are full anyway during a normal season – so i am not sure if there will be any more In Person spectators. The TV audience will tell the story. AFL doesn’t rate very well in Sydney but better in Brisbane. I think the TV games for the Las Vega$ experimentfor the NRL will be interesting. I actually know people in Vegas who are Americans who are going to the game. They are hoping to get 60,000. But once again the NRL will be down on what it could have got with both games. The AFL has to continue with the raid into the Northern States and good on them for trying. Btw the way both codes should be interested in where the people are not in the geography – there is an awful lot of sand in both Western Australia and South Australia.

COMMENT: Congratulations, AFL - 'Opening Round' is the dumbest thing you've ever done

Spot On ! This is correct. People need to support their Teams. Sadly that is not happening. Its a vicious circle for sure. But both the NRL and AFL attendances were way up so its not because others are also showing a decline. So whats the problem ?

There is only ever one 'must-see' fixture in the A-League Men each week

Great to see the atmosphere after the game. Playing the club song etc adds to atmosphere. Love it

ANALYSIS: Broncos surge into prelim after heartbreaking Papi injury - but were the Panthers the big winners?

Funny – Teams dIDNT field their best players during the final round yet close to 200,000 will attend matches. 79,544 attended the two games in the final round at Suncorp proving that the Dolphins were a good fit. All in all crowds are up 20 percent and thats despite the mid season lull with the chaos that SOO seems to cause games. A good year for the NRL. They need teams like Newcastle , Warriors to win. One interesting thing is the underwhelming crowd at the souths/roosters game in final round. Souths crowds for most part are ordinary.

NRL Week 1 finals match-ups: Playoff fixtures LOCKED IN

Round 15 saw excellent attendances. Over 176,000 for the round. Average 22,000 for each game. The season average is close to 19,000 for the year. Along with huge increase in TV ratings for both regular season and origin. It’s looking good. League gets little recognition in the media in Melbourne yet over 20,000 attended the storm sharks game at aami park. League has been bagged , banned and maligned for years – yet looks like this year is a bumper year. I go for the underdog and I’m glad to see this happen to the NRL.

Round 15 Talking Points: New duo will light up Origin, Moses wins Blues battle, NRL sides get mid-year wobbles

Love your comment – AFL happy to be a big fish in their pond.

Apathy and incentives: Without high-level stakes and drama, the A-League will always be lacking

Highest participation yes but thats all gone after a certain age. My two sons play football at school but what do they talk about with their friends – Parra in the NRL. Never once have I heard them mention a A-League team. Like learning how to tie your shoe laces when you’re ten but when you get a few years older you like slip ons. There is so little traction for the a league it’s a mystery.

Apathy and incentives: Without high-level stakes and drama, the A-League will always be lacking

Well the NRL must’ve doing something right their attendances are up 20 percent on last year. Highest average crowds in their history 19,000. Yes it has blow outs. But you failed to mention that for most of that game it was execiting and close. Tv audiences on fta and fox for each weekend number 4 million. I would stick with trying to work out why no one goes to football games no one watches a-league on TV before having a go at the NRL. What’s needed is objectivity to resolve the a leagues problem which is simply- very few people care about it. Which I find perplexing as it is a good product.

The A-League desperately needs to bridge the gap between its best games and its worst

once again a fair comment. But to be on the money – going to the game is one thing but getting people to watch overall is extremely important. Both indices coming together (attendances and TV audiences) as a cumulative are what advertisers look at. But as i said if this discussion is about just getting people to turn up physically then you are correct. Will be interesting to see how the state of Origin goes in Adelaide in four weeks. I would think the actual attendance but also the audience in the Adelaide market would interest advertisers from a TV /Fox perspective.
