The game in regional QLD is definitely not in a good way, no local junior competition in Mackay for little ones – club or school based. Our kids now play league in the Mackay comp which has 10 clubs with most of them fielding 3 teams per age group. So by not even having the option, kids from this whole area will play and follow league by default.

Why an under 85kg Bledisloe Cup could be better than the real thing

My concern is the cost involved with holding a game at a larger venue will naturally cost more, so higher tickets prices and still not much profit. I would rather see lower overheads and a more money returned to the local clubs and competitions to kick start the game locally.

To grow the game, we should be having a World Cup every 2 years with qualifying tournaments held every year in different regions. That way interest is not lost on kids who may be sparked by watching their national team playing for glory. We shouldn’t worry about playing in huge stadiums if we cant fill them, so aim for getting fans before accommodating them. Its better to turn some away than to play in empty stadiums.

If we want to grow the international game, have a World Cup every two years to keep the excitement and engagement up. That way those countries that miss qualification can re-group and push harder for entry.
