I found it interesting when the article mentioned how a rivalry can be built around one person or one act, which is why i think the most important game in Aussie Rugby this year will be O’Connor returning to returning to Perth in a Rebels jumper
Rebels have spotted their enemy on the western horizon
Adelaide is a logical place for future expansion based on size but thees just no passion for other sports here.
We have our League and Rugby die hards and our all round sportsman but Aussie Rules dominates absolutely.
Which is why the rebels are so important not only for Victorian Rugby but for Rugby in other states- the SA academy the have gives some hope for SA Rugby players, and i think should be nurtured, give the Rebels some pre-season games here or something, grow the game in the southern states more.
Rebels have spotted their enemy on the western horizon
“merely OK” is not good enough in such Sydney and Melbourne, and CA would know that. 27,000 at Adelaide is a great total i don’t deny that at any point but there were other factors that lead to that crowd. Unless great weather and a public holiday are guaranteed elements to this league a number like that might not be seen again this summer.
BBL more than just smoke and mirrors
*moot. Fair go mate. I stand by my point if (not my grammar)!
Will the Giants win a game in 2012?
Considering the Giants did better in the NEAFL than the Suns did in the VFL, as Ian Whitchurch pointed out, the kids will be extremely confident leading into this season- the addition of their veterans would also help to keep the mood up.
But i think all of this is really a mute point. The AFL wont care if the Giants loose every game or only win one against Port or whatever and neither will the Giants- the real battle is off field, and how many members they can secure, how much they make off merchandise etc. Granted without winning games that will be hard, but GWS have indicated they’ll be looking long term on field, and merciless off.
Will the Giants win a game in 2012?
Sorry but i still think its a joke. And for me it will be until the best teams from the second best comp in the land join. Until the Central Districts Bulldogs and Norwood compete its not being properly represented.
The 2012 Foxtel Cup announced
Port Adelaide of old in the SANFL is a club with a rock hard uncompromising image, who would win games from no where and snub their noses at everyone else with complete arrogance. Bending to the will of a sponsor would further hurt this image which is already crippled thanks to the AFL club essentially being turned into a welfare depended entity. They need to keep some of their pride and maintain some semblance of control during these hard times.
Port Power right to ignore sponsor's Davis-Fevola deal
Perhaps the one clever thing about this is how the Adelaide Strikers approached the policy of non-state based colors. Rather than choosing the traditional Red with blue and gold trim or some variant of that, they took one of the state colors and changed the hue. Brilliant. also looks enough like Port Adelaide’s teal-blue to attract some attention form their supporters, and doesnt look too bone jarringly foreign!
Too much spin in lead up to Big Bash League
Great to see a lot of feeling here guys, perhaps more feeling on for an article than there is for the damn league!!
Too much spin in lead up to Big Bash League
Re-read the article. At no point do i question the clubs future.
Adelaide United struggling in one team town
I find the biggest problem of NRL jumpers to be the gross over use of advertising. The frontage looks like billboard space on too many guernseys.
Some clubs, like the Broncos, have reverted to a simple and eye catching design that relies souly on the strong colour scheme of the club. Time for others to follow their lead
AFL clubs choosing tradition in aesthetics
Great idea, and good call on the NRL in Perth. Obvious choice for an expansion in my mind- enough of this Brisbane Bombers crap, bring in Western Reds and Central Coast Bears
AFL fire a blast in code war
What i didn’t mention much in the article is that they still have the chance to get some older bodies, with their window for getting uncontracted players extended to the end of next year. MDS 1970, they’re definitely investing in the future, which shows how confident they are with the AFL’s support and reveals something about their commitment to the area- if the club was at all concerned with growing the brand, they would of gone hell for leather at getting older players.
OR, it may be that these players are all they could get, and maybe Sheedy’s boasts over players coming to the West are misfounded
Kevin Sheedy building junior GWS Giants
For sure they’ll win at least 2 games. GC have shown that the local rivalry clashes are always winnable, and they’ll beat a lower ranked side. 2013 looks to be the year most of their young kids will break out though
Kevin Sheedy building junior GWS Giants
Paradoxically, the nuetral observer can applaued the courage and forsite of these players, but a fan of the club cant.
I think all are making the right decision, the only player so far to truly act in the wrong when moving ot a new club was Krakouer the rest have been very proffessional and handled themselves very well- I’m 22, and i couldnt imagine how hard it would be to make this kind of move for so much money, the pressure on these blokes must be huge!!
We need to chill out on players 'defecting' to GWS
AS another passionate crows supporter all i’ll say is don’t throw stones. We’re not doing much better mate, and karma’s a bitch.
Also, thanks for making us look as immature, narrow minded and shallow as you clearly are when it comes to footy. Write about real issues don’t just regurgitate well known history facts to look high and mighty
Power failure lights up rest of state
Still the best response to the Haka i’ve ever seen. So simple, elegant and moving.
How the haka can help the Wallabies
Trade Tippett?! Your kidding. I could get behind everything else u said but that. Why any club would trade a big key forward about to hit his peak is beyond me
Scott Burns will coach Adelaide Crows
LOl great for a laugh mate, personally i like the color nicknames, but agree animals and historical links are much much better.
Should rate on Guernseys as well- be in interesting twist
A not so serious look at the code wars
Moving Melbourne clubs from ancestral homes is, in my opinion, not the answere. It may open new markets, but it will alienate tens of thousenads of former supporters.
Wookie, yes Port are doing some great things off field, i’m just offering some other alternatives. Whats wrong with explointing a fresh market ala hawthorn in tasmania? Why do you think the AFL wont allow it – the weather is the only thing i i can think of that will ever hold back these plans.
Redb, thanks for the dig at my home state mate. Get stuffed. BUUUUUT i agree in that it needs the redovlempoment in the city and a new or redeveloped stadium would help. Any one who argues other wise has their head in the sand.
Some options for AFL's battlers: Port Adelaide and North Melbourne
My article which has appeared just after this one covers a similar topic looking at North and Port, and i agree whole heatedly. Bombers this year have proved that off field success= on field through better coaching and facilities.
Its funny how a team like my Crows can be content in making finals year after year with little success but still stay a power house and continue, all thanks to the backing of its ~50,000 membership bass and supporter network, not to mention one of the strongest sponsorship deals in AFL history!
Money can buy success in the AFL
I’ve always enjoyed Gaelic more, no doubt because of my Aussie Rules background, but wow what a game to watch. I’ts like ice hockey- if you can see the ball/puck in movement there’s something wrong with you. The argument about AFL players wearing helmets looks really silly after watching this lol
In praise of Hurling
Centrals aren’t in the Foxtel Cup because (with all due respect) it’s beneath them. They’re goal every year is the SANFL cup. They don’t need the prise money or more silver wear, they only exist to win premierships in their league. They have nothing to prove to anyone, and frankly if they DID participate they would only be risking injury, reports and a loss of capitol by traveling.
The SANFL clubs that have joined, my mighty North Adelaide Roosters, West Adelaide Bloods and Port Adelaide Magpies are teams that have struggled in years past for success, publicity or both. This is a great chance to maybe fill the coffers and trophie cabinet, and as they stand little chance of winning their local league with Centrals still dominant and wholly focused on that cup, it may be a chance for them to win a nationally recognized trophy and give their long suffering fans something to cheer over.
How Centrals and Gowans rule SANFL
Agreed, good preview.
As a Crows fan i think everything you said was fair. Tippett and Walker are a frustrating pair- if they could ever get it together we could have that Brown-Bradshaw, Franklin-Roughhead combination. Or even if one fires, we could actually have a dominate key-forward, which we haven’t really had since Modra. Sure we had Carey but in the twighlight of his career, and Ian Perrie is hardly a house hold name.
Crows changing, but will this AFL preview change your life?
