What’s the actual rulebook definition of a hip drop? Because the definitions frosting around in the media are grabbing a player around the hip or waist and then dropping your weight on their legs. By that definition the Cleary tackle is a hip drop imo, nothing states that he needs to drop side on like we traditionally see.

Panthers keep up unbeaten start, but Cleary under hip drop cloud

I remember how disappointed I was when Tolman left Melbourne. I think his ceiling was quite a bit higher than he ever reached at the Dogs

Signing leadership and quality reshaped the Sharks, but how real is it?

They haven’t really had their succession planning interrupted by the salary cap yet. I would argue that Tamou, Maloney and Mansour left when they were meant to leave, when the players they had been developing to replace them were ready.
Capewell spent only one season as a starting player, Liam Martin was the 2020 starter he replaced.
Momirovski, Naden and Burton have left, but they were all essentially fighting for the same centre position, so it’s not a massive hole in the starting lineup to replace.
Once they start losing players to the salary cap that have been nailed on starters for 2 or 3 seasons, that they intended to build their team around for the next 5 years plus, then we’ll have a better idea how Penrith handle the salary cap management.
Losing Kikau and Koroisau next year is really the first test imo.

MICHAEL HAGAN: Why Panthers can emulate Eels of the '80s with a rare premiership three-peat

Better? Maybe.
Good? Probably not.
Not only has the Warrior’s ladder position remained the same over the covid period, Melbourne, arguably the second worse affected team have a Premiership and a Minor Premiership in the same period. The Cowboys and Broncos have had the least disadvantage and been dire.

Worries for the Warriors as three key players may be heading for the exits

Also blaming covid for the Warriors poor form when they finished 10th, 13th, 8th, 13th in the four seasons prior… that’s an average of 11th, which is exactly the same as their average finish during covid.

Common denominator in all your examples is they played for England. How well would Khawaja have been received in an Indian shirt I wonder?

Pakistan fans show amazing grace in embracing Khawaja as he tears their team apart

Haven’t watched Nine in donkeys, but is Ryan Girdler still there? Put him at centre, move SBW to second row and piss Gould off lol!

Forget finals, it's the footy game we really want: Channel Nine vs Fox Sports

First time all year the Storm have been able to name their top 17. Timing!

NRL preliminary finals teams: Big boost for Storm, Panther to miss again

1. Paps 2. Jennings 3. Smith 4. Lee 5. Lumelume 6. Hynes 7. Hughes 8. Bromwich 9. Booth 10. Tui 11. Bromwich 12. Eisenhuth 13. Finucane 14. Johns/Smoothy 15. Lewis 16. Moeroa 17. Pene
Honestly, it might not win, but that side doesn’t get flogged imo.

Also Melbourne didn’t fill their squad with injury prone and aging players. I’ve said it before, but a lot of that list in isolation aren’t surprising injuries, and it put extra pressure on the rest of the squad. Sure they’ve had bad luck to have them all come at once, but some responsibility with roster management and medical and sports science has to lay with the Roosters no?

'The Roosters had no answers': Talking points from the Sea Eagles' decimation of the Roosters

I don’t mind Warren Smith, but I want to throw something at the tele every time he says “heads up play”.

The good, the bad and the Blocker: who are the best and worst of NRL's TV callers?

I read somewhere that in all 4 of Melbournes premiership years, they failed to beat the Eels during the regular season… Maybe it isn’t the sign you are looking for lol

A Storm-Souths decider will provide the ultimate drama

I’d say the “taking souls” thing comes from Ex Navy Seal David Goggins. I’m sure lots of ex/sportsmen listen to him, Denan included

'They're in the business of taking souls': Talking points from the Storm’s crushing win over Manly

Aging pack? JBrom 32, KBrom and Kaufusi 29, Welsh and Kamikamica 27, BSmith, NAS and Moeroa 25… that’s a very battle hardened pack that’s perfectly poised to be transitioned one or two players a season with fresh blood, something that Craig Bellamy has proven himself pretty handy at, and not just in the forwards.

NRL finals Week 1 preview: The quest to stop the Storm

I’m starting to fear that concussion or general wear and tear is going to cut short Finucane’s career. I think Melbourne may have pulled the trigger at exactly the right time. That said, I almost think he’s worth the money to the Sharks for his off field work anyway.

2022 NRL signings: Who will continue to amaze, and who just won’t be the same?

Never really been a fan of sledging myself, more so the constant chatter of guys like Chambers as opposed to the one off genuinely funny one liners, but what I want to know is how come so many people are convinced it was “over the line” when no one can tell us what he actually said?!

Will Chambers' unrelenting abuse should be beginning of the end for sledging

Not meaning to be disrespectful or belittle the efforts of the Roosters this year, but at the start of the season if you had told me that Cordner or Keary or Friend or Smith or Morris x2 had had a season ending injury, it wouldn’t have been that surprising given their age or previous injury history. Collins is the only really surprising one, and obviously the fact that all of the proverbial Roosters have come home to roost at the same time if you take my meaning…

The NRL's current injury toll is becoming intolerable

I’ve quite enjoyed this series of articles. I love stuff like this, but couldn’t be bothered doing all the research myself hahaha. Good job Messenger!

Rugby league rookie cup: The class of 2007

Sika Manu would be my first pick in the starting side over either of Te’o and Aubusson. An absolute weapon when he wasn’t cruelled by injuries

Rugby league rookie cup: The class of 2007

It’s Manly right edge of Harper/Saab up against Melbourne’s left edge of Olam/Addo Carr. Melbourne’s right edge of Smith/Ieremia is probably it’s weakest point defensively, up against Parker and Garrick. Should be a good battle, can’t wait!

Revisiting the Battle of Brookvale as Manly and Melbourne prepare to resume hostilities

Melbourne’s right edge is probably it’s weakest part, but Saab will be marking up on Melbourne’s left edge no? Be interesting to see how Harper goes with the physicality of Olam, and how the speedsters on the wing match up

I’m sorry, but how does putting our Aboriginal brothers in a position where they have to choose between their country and their culture (and implicitly reject the other) and then possibly knock out or get knocked out by Australia bring us closer together??

Why are NRL players STILL being shut out of the biggest decisions?

NAS did have a finger issue in the Cowboys game, maybe it’s related to that?

NRL Round 20 teams: Storm load up for blockbuster, Panthers licking wounds

Jake Webster was also a specialist center/winger who played 8 tests for NZ. I guess the fact he played only 5 seasons of NRL before going to the Super League probably counts against him though. Maybe it’s just the trauma from watching Turbo carve up Capewell in Origin, but I’d probably go a back 5 of 1. Stewart 2. Slater 3. Webster 4. King 5. Covell (For his goal kicking)

Rugby league rookie cup: The class of 2003

I don’t know what other wingers debuted that year, but surely you’d pick Matt King in the centers given the alternative options? He played there at club level almost exclusively after his first full season, even if Cooper and Gasnier ect kept him on the wing for rep teams

Rugby league rookie cup: The class of 2003

Actually Ben Roberts was playing 6 in 2014, Widdop had left the year before. At the end of 2014 Melbourne let go 11 players, and 2015 saw club debuts for Blake Green, Finucane, Kaufusi, NAS and Christian Welsh, as well as the first full seasons for Munster, Kurt Mann and Marika Koroibete. So basically yes, it was a vastly different squad to 2014 by Melbourne Storm standards….

The 2021 reality for most NRL fans: Give up or pray for a miracle
