I do agree the shorter pre season thing is overblown but in reality, it is more than one week.
A winning GF side celebrates for a week, then recovers and goes on holidays. Their whole thought process for a month is to bask in the glory of the GF. No criticism, just how it is.
A team knocked out in the prelim doesn’t celebrate anything and almost immediately starts thinking and planning for next year.

Footy Fix: Fly's Pies have officially been worked out - but that's just the start of their problems

Not quite Doogie. Afghani women are not allowed (by their Government) to play sport.
The series that was cancelled was against the men’s side.

'Succumbing to political influences': Afghanistan rips into Cricket Australia after abandoning tour

I think you need help.

'Succumbing to political influences': Afghanistan rips into Cricket Australia after abandoning tour

That really is the job of the ICC (and I’m sure they have tried). However, if a nation refuses to allow it’s females to participate in sport, it is in contravention of the rules of this club. Therefore, this nation should not be a member of the club. Pretty simple really.
No doubt the ICC and other nations want Afghanistan as part of the ICC but you can’t continue to pander to a nation that ignores basic conditions of membership.

'Succumbing to political influences': Afghanistan rips into Cricket Australia after abandoning tour

The ICC is the governing body for cricket. To be a full member of the ICC, each country has to adhere to a number of conditions. Unfortunately, Afghanistan does not comply with some conditions and therefore does not deserve full membership – the ICC has turned a blind eye to the non compliance and Australia has drawn a line in the sand.
I would prefer that the ICC either demote Afghanistan from a full member or that Afghanistan would honour the (well known) conditions of being a full member. It is Afghanistan that is wrong by expecting privileges whilst not fulfilling their obligations.
If England or India suddenly chose to abandon their female cricket program and ban all women from competing, Australia would take the same stance.

Yep, pretty dumb decision. At best, he’s a fringe T20 cricketer for Australia but more likely to carry the drinks throughout the tournament.
However, he is the perfect replacement for Marsh at number 6 in the test side should injury, form or age present a need. A stint in county cricket would be ideal.
Remind me again, who is running CA?

CA steps in to stop rising star from taking up county stint due to workload concerns

Do we get some dates so we can start planning holidays?

CA makes Perth call - where and when Australia's blockbuster Tests against India will be played

Wish I’d done that (turning up a day late)!

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions, Opening Round: Your guide to starting 2024 with a perfect four from four

Yes, the Shield and Test Match pitches over the last couple of seasons have certainly been more conducive to bowling than in the 5 or so years earlier.
So this should be taken into consideration but I don’t think the Australian selectors actually rate many of the Shield bowlers.

Pipeline running dry: Aussie selectors struggling to find young batters knocking at the door, let alone bashing it down

Thanks for the articles Tim.
Don’t agree with some of your conclusions but we wont know who is right until the end of August.
I think it should be 3 categories –
a) will most likely make the 8.
b) might make the 8.
c) almost definitely wont make the 8.
In no particular order:-
a) Collingwood, Brisbane, GWS, Carlton, Port Adelaide
b) Geelong, Sydney, Melbourne, St Kilda, Adelaide, Fremantle
c) Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Gold Coast, Richmond, North Melbourne, Essendon, West Coast
Injuries, suspensions and the bounce of the ball can affect the result of a single game and therefore ladder positions and are unpredictable.

AFL Oracle: A prelim finalist ALWAYS misses the eight the year after - so who will it be in 2024?

Interesting point about the layoff for Shield cricketers when the pitches are at their best.
I think we all accept that Shield cricket is a necessary cost to CA – games rarely get more than a handful of spectators and are often played in our most expensive stadia.
How about we keep the SS going throughout the summer. Allowing the T20 players to go to their franchises and foster some first class cricket for our up and coming players who may be suited to the longer format. The games could be played at Premier Cricket grounds.
Perhaps the “top up” players need to be under 23?

Getting a bit touchy Steele?

AFL Oracle: After early September exits last year, can these finals also-rans take a leap forward in 2024?

I think Melbourne will struggle to make the 8. Not convinced on Oliver’s comeback and the Joel Smith saga will haunt them all year.
Saints or Sydney will miss out too.

Not where I was sitting – all the Eagles supporters around me gave Brayshaw a courteous clap as he left the field. I was at the game and everyone around me was shocked at Gaff’s action and we guessed 6 weeks plus. Gaff hasn’t been the same since and I reckon he lost a lot of respect that day.
Of course, all clubs have some feral supporters and there is bound to have been some idiots in the 50,000+ crowd.

AFL News: Clarkson apologises for 'emotional' 'c--ksucker' spray, Webster facing lengthy ban

I agree, I’m not calling for him to be dropped. I think the selectors have got this right- Carey for tests and Inglis for white ball stuff.
I think Carey needs to work on his batting. He seems to have put away the reverse sweep that caused his downfall a few times but he still has a few areas to work on.

Test Mortem: Aussie aura living rent free in Kiwi minds, Marnus officially in a form slump, DRS needs review

I am notoriously bad at pre season predictions. In early 2018, I booked an overseas holiday for September and my team went on to win the flag – I watched the Gf on television and was caught trying to explain the game to my Canadian friends (a reasonable thing to do for a normal game but not a GF).
The only one of this bunch I can see jumping into the top 8 in 2024 is Adelaide. I expect all the others to slide down the ladder from their 2023 positions.

AFL Oracle: They just missed the eight last year - but can any of these teams turn it around in 2024?

Linespeople have not disappeared in tennis – maybe for the Grand slams but not all tournaments. Andre Rublev was recently disqualified for abusing a linesperson.

I’ve been called a lot of things in my (very ordinary) sporting life. However, I never got an apology – not once.

AFL News: Clarkson apologises for 'emotional' 'c--ksucker' spray, Webster facing lengthy ban

I have suggested previously that a player should get whatever ban the tribunal hands down plus being forced to sit out the next game against that opponent. For example in the Gaff incident, he should have got x number of weeks plus the next game against Freo.
I think the tribunal needs to up its penalties (and include Collingwood).

Pretty good legal reps there too and the Pies have deep pockets.

I’m not picking on Carey and I think he is the right choice (for now) as test keeper. Whilst their first class stats are comparable, Carey’s batting has dropped off in the last year or so.
Prior to the start of 2023 (about half way through his test career to date), his test average was 40, it has now dropped below 30.
On the other hand, I think Inglis is improving with the bat.
Neither of them are an Adam Gilchrist.

Another option is to move Smith to 3, drop Marnus and choose another opener.
Make Marnus earn a place in the XI.
I seem to recall many of his big scores were after getting several life’s. He was considered lucky but it appears he used up all his luck early in his career.

Yes, the first session on day 2 killed the Kiwis. It’s easy to blame Southee (I’m not a big fan) but Williamson still has a significant influence on the field and between them, they should have been able to orchestrate a wicket. The bowling was poor but so was the field placement.
They didn’t appear to have a plan and it looked like they just expected to get an early wicket.
NZ failure to get a wicket in the first hour contributed to their horror start in the first innings.
At stumps on day 1 it was relatively even. By tea on day 2, the game was effectively lost by NZ.

Test Mortem: Aussie aura living rent free in Kiwi minds, Marnus officially in a form slump, DRS needs review

Inglis is a better bat than Carey but I think Carey is the superior keeper in the longer format. Inglis makes more mistakes if the opponents innings drags on.
I don’t like our selectors but I think they have this balance right (except, I wouldn’t have Wade in any Australian team ever again).

Test Mortem: Aussie aura living rent free in Kiwi minds, Marnus officially in a form slump, DRS needs review

Yes but there is a fine line. In tennis, some of the players are calling for the umpires to be removed completely and all calls to be made by technology. If we do that, we might as well get robots to play the game and do away with expensive, entitled human players who make multiple mistakes every match.
In cricket, we need to disincentivise the review for blatant decisions.
How about each team gets 5 reviews per innings and loses one if it is umpire’s call. However, in the case of a clear cut decision (like the Phillips one where the player knew he was out), the team loses 3 reviews.
