Pretty good legal reps there too and the Pies have deep pockets.

AFL News: Clarkson apologises for 'emotional' 'c--ksucker' spray, Webster facing lengthy ban

I’m not picking on Carey and I think he is the right choice (for now) as test keeper. Whilst their first class stats are comparable, Carey’s batting has dropped off in the last year or so.
Prior to the start of 2023 (about half way through his test career to date), his test average was 40, it has now dropped below 30.
On the other hand, I think Inglis is improving with the bat.
Neither of them are an Adam Gilchrist.

Test Mortem: Aussie aura living rent free in Kiwi minds, Marnus officially in a form slump, DRS needs review

Another option is to move Smith to 3, drop Marnus and choose another opener.
Make Marnus earn a place in the XI.
I seem to recall many of his big scores were after getting several life’s. He was considered lucky but it appears he used up all his luck early in his career.

Yes, the first session on day 2 killed the Kiwis. It’s easy to blame Southee (I’m not a big fan) but Williamson still has a significant influence on the field and between them, they should have been able to orchestrate a wicket. The bowling was poor but so was the field placement.
They didn’t appear to have a plan and it looked like they just expected to get an early wicket.
NZ failure to get a wicket in the first hour contributed to their horror start in the first innings.
At stumps on day 1 it was relatively even. By tea on day 2, the game was effectively lost by NZ.

Inglis is a better bat than Carey but I think Carey is the superior keeper in the longer format. Inglis makes more mistakes if the opponents innings drags on.
I don’t like our selectors but I think they have this balance right (except, I wouldn’t have Wade in any Australian team ever again).

Yes but there is a fine line. In tennis, some of the players are calling for the umpires to be removed completely and all calls to be made by technology. If we do that, we might as well get robots to play the game and do away with expensive, entitled human players who make multiple mistakes every match.
In cricket, we need to disincentivise the review for blatant decisions.
How about each team gets 5 reviews per innings and loses one if it is umpire’s call. However, in the case of a clear cut decision (like the Phillips one where the player knew he was out), the team loses 3 reviews.

The big difference in those circumstances is that with cricket the batsman can realistically score from such a delivery. In baseball, it is impossible to score.
If you take out the bouncer in cricket, you will completely change the game.

There is a theory that the training facility at Lathlain is partly to blame.

AFL Oracle: There's always one! Which of last year's bottom five is September-bound in 2024?

This is the 2nd time that I’ve read on here that Hawthorn have had a nightmare injury run. Why is this accepted as an excuse for Hawthorn but not the Eagles (who’s 2023 injury woes were 10 times worse than what Hawthorn have encountered)?
The only side from the bottom 5 that has the talent to make finals in 2024 is Freo. They may not make it but they have the talent to do so.

AFL Oracle: There's always one! Which of last year's bottom five is September-bound in 2024?

Yep, we’re not playing finals in 2024 but I wouldn’t rule out 2025.

I missed today’s play as I had my own sport going on (although, I would have been better off watching the cricket!).
This will be a very difficult chase for NZ but if they manage to pull it off, it will be a great win. They will need Ravindra to score a big 100 and for him to get good support from Mitchell, Phillips and Blundell.
My money would still be on Australia.

Black Caps dare to dream of epic comeback win after Australia's brittle batting exposed by part-time spinner

Great innings by Green – I don’t think he gave a genuine chance all day.
Well bowled Matt Henry.
Our quicks should be a real handful on this wicket and I think we are in front.

I didn’t know The West was still in production. Seriously, I haven’t read a newspaper for over a year (and I’m a fossil).

AFL News: WA great quits newspaper gig over Harley Reid article censor, huge blow for Cats star confirmed

To be honest, this just sounds like a conversation between two privileged people who are out of touch with the real world.
Khawaja seems to think, if you have a problem you just fix it by throwing money at it. Most people know that if you can fix a building up for $50k, it costs the government at least 5 times that to achieve the same thing.
As for the NZ PM, good on him for accumulating 7 unencumbered properties but should he get an allowance for living in one?

Usman Khawaja sets off accidental political storm in NZ

I get your point but someone might mount an argument that Gilchrist was born in NSW.
He played all his state cricket in WA and we made him great but he was born in NSW!

Paris, Hilton deliver dose of reality to Blues as WA make history with third straight one-day crown

It would be interesting to see what WA’s side looks like at full strength (50 over side).
Maybe:
Ingliss
Bancroft/Whiteman
Hardie
Marsh
Green
Stoinis/Cartwright
Connolly/Turner
Agar
Paris
Richardson
Berendorff/Tye
Hard to fit them in.

I don’t think Mark Taylor played in any World Cup winning teams.
BTW, he did bat at 7 once – got a second ball duck!

Paris, Hilton deliver dose of reality to Blues as WA make history with third straight one-day crown

It’s interesting.
WA has produced a lot of very good domestic players but few very good international cricketers. This has helped WA to win a lot of domestic tournaments.
The Sandgroper in me says it’s because those ES based international selectors don’t recognise good talent but in fairness, there’s not any in this team who demand international selection.
From this team, there is only Whiteman, Hobson and Connolly who haven’t played for Australia. However, I doubt the other 8 are likely to play much of a regular roll in any of the national teams of the next 5 years.
As for NSW, I can only see Edwards and Sangha (and maybe Ollie Davies) getting opportunities in the future. Henriques, Dwarshuis, Green and Bird have all had chances but not really been up to international level and are now all well down the pecking order for their respective specialties.
So, whilst the national selectors would have checked the scores, there was nothing here for them to get excited about.

What a bizarre article.
The headline says “Overblown Hysteria” and in the 2nd paragraph you say “Most of the clever pundits regard Reid as a godly talent.” If you are arguing that the hysteria is overblown, it seems silly to quote “clever pundits”. BTW, who are these “clever pundits”?
No doubt WCE fans are looking forward to seeing Reid play but no one expects one 18 year old player to turn around 2 horror seasons.
On those 2 horror seasons, the club suffered a series of significant injuries to multiple experienced players (all well documented) that no AFL club would have prospered through.
West Coast are behind where there should be in their rebuild but the future looks promising – I’m not suggesting they’ll play finals in 2024 but I think they will be jostling for a spot in the 8 in 2025.

'Overblown hysteria': Harley Reid is a gun, but he won't stop the Eagles finishing last again

I agree. It feels like he (Wade) is an unnecessary player in the squad but there is the Bailey Principle.

'Special to watch': David's demolition propels Australia to last-ball cliffhanger win after bowlers earn unwanted record

Yes, it was a reckless act and deserved a suspension.
From memory, Venables was unlucky and no one was at fault. McCartin got a few head knocks but I don’t know whether any of them warranted suspension of opposing players.
So changing the rules may only reduce concussions by a portion and not eliminate the problem.

COMMENT: Angus Brayshaw's retirement isn't Brayden Maynard's fault - it's the AFL's

Yeah, poor Brayden. He probably hasn’t slept since that bump. I really hope he’s ok.
