I don’t quite understand your thinking IAP. How do you defend the long kick without applying pressure to the kicker? Why kick short to the pocket if you can simply run there, unhindered, yourself? I’m backing any decent, evasive runner to get to 25+ if the only player applying pressure to the kicker is the player on the mark, standing 15-20 metres back.

I think that the new kick in rules will force the defending team to commit a player toward each pocket, otherwise the player kicking in will easily advance to 25 metres and beyond. The man on the mark is so far back that he will be unable to apply any real pressure without assistance. The result will be two players less available in the defensive zone and I reckon play will advance more easily to the wings, the widest part of the ground and hardest to congest. I can’t wait to see which teams and coaches are able to get the early running on this rule and how it will change the game.
