I hope ‘fewer but meatier’ means you are taking time to work on that Book, Harry. Really admire your writing man. Fornicating ball and Steinbeck, vintage Jones.

I can see the logic behind Joe’s decision. He has become a truly international coach, always seeking the next challenge, and this gig is as big as they come – rebuild after Hurricane Eddie, and make your mark within two years against the IBL. Not BIL, the IBL. A series against a team that will be stacked with players he knows well. I hope he goes well, and if he does, it will benefit the ABs, because the Wobblies will be competitive again. But I also see this environment at this junction in time as a burial ground for very good Kiwi coaches. It almost sounds like an opening line in a joke; A good footy coach walks into a bar (the Ballad of Buster Scruggs comes to mind). Or is it a blizzard, or a dead-horse town? Very good Kiwi men, even one with an Ozzie nickname, have come unstuck in this rugby outback.

Nobody Goes For Pints with Joe: 'Cult-like figure' with an 'exhausting' style who might just restore pride to a rabble

So, Christy, what you are saying is that, for Aus to do well in the Bled, RC, and SRP, depends on NZ teams to be in a ‘weakened’ state. I actually rate the Aussies a bit higher than that. If they can get their house in order they can be competitive, regardless of the state of the opposition. For that to happen, I’d go with McKellar or Larkham. It should by now be clear that even very good NZ coaches cannot coach the Wobblies. They end up like possums in the headlights of AR politics.

Wallabies to get new skipper, Bledisloe joy and shock Rugby Championship win: XV fearless predictions for 2024

Let me stir this tedious thread a bit: I like the TMO, the Bunker, and the Refs. I enjoy the endless replays and reviews, all in the name of accuracy and objectivity. The triumph of science and technology over savagery. Such a noble moral quest, I don’t care how far back they go, even if the review happens after the game and the result is then officially corrected. Imagine the Boks having to hand the cup over now, and Faf having to put his pants back on. I even like the sub-plots – at one point during the final it occurred to me that we were playing against the Boks as well as against the English (the refereeing team, you know). Imagine, a triple international! Why settle for a boring game between two nations if you can have three? That idea, of three being better than two, is seeing increasing success in other human endeavours. Oh boy. I think I’ll make this my last post for 2023. See all you clever people in SRP ’24 and beyond.

Joost van der Westhuizen. Now you’re talking about a real halfback. Never heard him squeal, played like a mercenary. Him, Smith, and DuPont are the best of the recent crop, though they stand on the shoulders of a giant; Dr Danie Craven.

RWC Team of the tournament: Six Boks, three All Blacks and an Aussie manages to knock out Will Jordan

How about DuPont being the best NH and Nugget the best SH halfbacks, considering the different styles played by their respective teams? I like everything about DuPont, but we are unlikely to ever again see the level of passing Smith has accomplished.

Good selection Harry, though I’d have Jordan instead of Hansen, and either Boffelli or Ramos at FB. Jordan scores more, and is positionally more astute without the ball than Hansen (and everybody else, for that matter).

I think Brodie is off to make money for a while. I suspect Razor will clean out, heaps of prospects coming through, so it will be interesting.

WORLD VIEW: 'Disgrace'- strange slap for Boks coaches after 'beautifully ugly' 'shambles' of a World Cup final

From an ABs supporter – how on earth is PSDT not in this team? Not to be taken seriously, I guess. Ardie’s award very well deserved, though. What a player, what a bloke.

'Lot of hurt': Ardie wins award 24 hours after ABs devastation, fans blow up at 'horrendous' Boks snub in Team of the Year

PeterK and Ozymandias: Well, maybe ‘have the measure of’ was a bit strong language, but hey, we live in hope. Those two aspects of the Bok game are always a challenge to the ABs. The thing is though, they made their own selections, and we all lose key players from time to time. It was their decision to go in with one back-up, who, incidentally, played a good game in my view, bar a few core role slip-ups. And we all know those come from pressure. I thought our replacements did fairly well towards the end. Except, of course for that pesky one point on the scoreboard.

The World Cup Wrap: France 2023 got a final befitting the host nation - imperfect, baffling and historic

Geoff, thanks or a wonderful wrap, well-written and thoughtful as always. You’re a beacon of light in the fourth estate. A truly momentous final, and all credit to the Boks. The Rivalry has now become more significant than either team on its own. What a privilege to be an ABs or Boks supporter through these times. Both teams now embark on a phase of massive change, and I’m looking forward to that process. I bet you that Razor and his mates are already talking about the RC next year. There were many notable points in the final, but from an ABs perspective two stood out for me:
1. We have the measure of the Bomb Squad in the set pieces, and
2. We are able to score tries against their rush defence, while our defence has become a real weapon.

I don’t like to comment on cards or refs, but on this one occasion want to point out my beef with red cards; the rules of rugby are there to ensure a fair contest. Creating a 14 vs 15 situation creates the opposite. Surely there are ways of penalising the player and team without ripping the guts out of the game? The recently trialled replacement of a sin binned player comes to mind. Just one of the many work-ons for WR.

To my mates across the ditch – hang in there, this is good news, this is how real change happens. Much like Ernest Hemingway’s response when asked how he went bankrupt: ‘Gradually, and then suddenly’.

Eddie Jones quits as Wallabies coach - 'Sometimes you have to eat s--t for others to eat caviar'

Yeah we need to accept that to be true of others in the team as well. We’ll take that on the chin (pun intended) and learn from that. Old habits die hard, and I don’t think the required changes in technique have become ingrained yet. Hopefully Razor will think so too.

MM, the respect is mutual. You guys deserve this win, no ifs or buts from me and the majority of ABs supporters I have contact with. Now, both teams will face massive changes and no doubt rebuild for 2027. That process will be fascinating. See you in the RC next year mate.

Ah, now I get it – Pete Samu’s tucked shirt is a wobblies supporter.

'My heart breaks for him': Boks coach's message to Ian Foster is pure class as he bows out an unlucky loser

I’d pay a lot of money to see this team take on a combined Irish/French team. Or England. The Roar vs the Whimper.

'Bloody handy!'- Nine All Blacks and six Springboks in The Roar's World Cup final combined XV

Ah, the English, who consider themselves a race of self-made men, and thus relieves God of a damning responsibility. Now there is bleating about a victim’s voice not being heard. There was a due process, as defined by the rules, so actually the victim has been heard. As for Mr Curry? Well, perhaps you should quit whimpering and speak up a little louder son, or, even better, do your talking on the field. You’re a flanker, aren’t you?

England react with fury as Bok cleared by World Rugby after TWO racism allegations made by Tom Curry

I have no qualms about this ABs team. Now I just need to get through the next couple of days. Line up the medications, plug in the defibrillator, get the paramedics on speed dial. No worries. See you on the other side brothers.

COMPLETE RWC finals teams: All Blacks' answer to Boks' bold 7-1 bench call, Smith returns for England

I respect the dignified, professional manner in which Foster responded to the turbulence around him. The outcome of the WC final has no bearing on that. The man has walked a challenging path, and stayed true to himself.

Waiting for the All Blacks to crumble: Final yardstick of NZ fans' treatment of Ian Foster

Cheers for a very interesting read, great angle. The England stats are mind boggling. I read somewhere that one of their midfielders only got a touch of the ball in the second half against the Boks. If that’s true, it must be a record of some sort. I mean really, how does that happen?

Stat Stupidity: Eight weird and wonderful numbers from the Rugby World Cup

Bliksem, you’ve been indoctrinated by Harry, who fears favourite status more than he fears an AA meeting. The Boks are the favourites by a country mile mate.

The feeling is reciprocal mate. It’s going to be epic, first time since 1995, can’t wait.

'Wild honesty and deep anger' vs the 'good company man': Coaching box culture clash at heart of World Cup final

Beautiful writing Harry, setting the mutually respectful tone for Saturday. In many ways Rassie is a man of Africa. Nothing ever tranquil, always the anger and brutal reality biding its time before erupting. There is an awful beauty in watching a pack of wild dogs hunting, a male lion mauling a hyena, an elephant bull smashing a 4×4 onto its side. I have seen these things, and tell you in the end the brutality always defies the beauty. One would think then, reading your piece, that the good company man stands no chance. But you underestimate these good, hard men from the little islands in the South Pacific. They always, always rise to the challenge. See you on Saturday mate.

'Wild honesty and deep anger' vs the 'good company man': Coaching box culture clash at heart of World Cup final

Nobody really ever wins when politics enters sport, West, but sadly it always does. It is kind of inevitable. The Boks could tell us a thing or two about that, I guess.

The Wrap: There's a reason Boks and All Blacks are at the big boys' table - the rest have to earn their way onto it
