I think the Sharks and the Waratahs may be battling it out to be the best team to never win it.
They have 4 semi finals and 2 finals appearances and have nothing to show for it.

Why the Sharks have to win Super Rugby

I think that is harsh on McCutcheon, he is pretty good fetcher. If the game was fast enough, Hooper & McCutcheon could be a very interesting combo.

Hoiles to replace Waratahs captain

I think Johnno is onto something. Their is definitely a conspiracy. too many Randwick players and not enough Gordon players (please ignore all form when selecting the squad).

Does anyone know which club Tony Abbot is aligned to? I bet its secretly Randwick.

I bet Randwick knows what happened to the missing Malaysian flight. The southern corridor leads right to Randwick!

Hoiles to replace Waratahs captain

I think Pulver is going in the right direction.
Half the reason the Wallabies don’t pick foreign players is to have that carrot to keep the best players in Australia knowing that the ARU can’t match the payments in Europe. The other reason is, If the players stay in Australia the ARU will control how much they play, how they play, where they play, how they are rehabilitated and when they are available for train. Just look at Elsom, apparently part of the reason he did not play much when he came to the Brumbies was his rehab in Europe was not very good (this was a rumour I heard, take with a grain of salt).

If they players are picked from overseas teams, this is all at the discretion of the clubs they sign for and the clubs only focus is on the club, not the Wallabies.

The Majority of the time the Wallabies are playing southern hemisphere teams, the majority of the time these teams and players are the best in the world. If the ARU pick from Australian based players, they will know how well they are doing compared to our main rivals and what needs to be worked on to try and improve this. If the players are based in Europe which is a different competition, played with different interpretations, with a very different focus and played in different conditions it will be harder to know how they will play in the southern hemisphere and harder for the players to adjust.

I think the ARU should allow 6 month sabbaticals for players who have reached a certain point, I.e. 30 tests or it could be included in a original negotiation for players the calibre of Izzy. This is the best of both worlds.

Come on Bill Pulver, this is 2014

Agreed. I think the second game was not brilliant but I think overall Foley is doing a great job. 12 tries in 3 games shows the attacking intent of the team and Foley is a big part of that.

SPIRO: Here come Japan and Scotland in new IRB world order

Great article Scott, I love the 3D stuff.

3D analysis: Wallabies versus France second Test

I like Kurtley as a player but his defence is a problem at international level and his tendency to run sideways. This sideways running takes space from players outside him and when he is hit in the tackle, his momentum is going sides not directly into the tackle so he often gets pushed backwards and turned over. These things can be fixed but for now I feel the bench is a great sport for him.

Beale biding his time on Wallabies bench

I love it. 32 teams is the way to go. Everyone needs to stop focusing on the AB’s beating teams by large scores. Lets not forget the Wallabies put on 50 points against France just over a week ago.

Rugby is massive in Shri Lanka and Mauritius. They are not great at it but they absolutely love it.

People also need to focus on games like Chile v Russia and Span v Belgium. That is what the tournament is about, not the mismatch between the AB’s and the lowest ranked team in their pool.

The Rugby World Cup must expand to 32 teams

Kicking out is great when the line is unmarked but that is not always possible when playing a good back 3.
When kicking, some chasers are an absolute requirement, we tend to have none and if someone does chase it is fairly slow.
I also think we need to put more height in our kicking and make it contestable, 2 to 3 chasers putting real pressure on.
This ensures the back three stay back and will thin out the defensive line when we have the ball.

Same same... but oh so different

Excellent article. Love your work Scott!

Do you think this sort or attack will have the same effect on the Boks and AB’s?

Do you think this sort of attack will work as well with different players, say an injury to Folau / Foley / AAC or the reintroduction of Cooper?

3D Rugby analysis - a new way to look at the game

I agree you need a jumper at 8 if Skelton is on the park. Being the large human Skelton is, he is not going to hit every ruck, or many rucks. I can see he brings allot of other attributes to the game and I think he will play well.

My concern with Skelggin-botham is the pace of the game. Higginbotham is hardly a ruck monkey and neither is Skelton, this will weaken our breakdown work significantly compared to a Palu-Jones or McCalman-Carter combo. Of course our running game will improve tremendously but this will place huge pressure on Fardy, Hooper and Simmons to really dominate the breakdown.

Wallabies team to play France in second Test announced

I second that. Some players are simply hated right from the get go.
You can add Dean Mumm to the list. Not my favourite player, maybe not good enough to play for the Wallabies but the guy was absolutely hated and all he did wrong was try his best as a player.

Rocket Rod in for two dad’s!
Hell, just pick the whole Reds team and be done with it.
If they don’t, they may lose the whole lot to Europe and as a Wallabies fan, I couldn’t live with that.
Damn Sydney based conspiracy mumble mumble REDS something.

Wallabies team to play France in second Test announced

It is a real shame. Alofa is extremely talented but it is tough to get a gig as an outside back in Australia. The Tahs have Crawford, Horne, Izzy, Volavola, Betham and that new massive Fijian unit.

A Wallaby squad selected entirely of overseas players

Excellent article. What about Lloyd Johanson? Not sure if he is still playing. He was going to be the next Mortlock, then close lined the real Mortlock & left for Europe. I saw him for the Rebels but he looked very out of shape.

A Wallaby squad selected entirely of overseas players

He is very good at the breakdown, deceptively strong over the ball. I think he forced at least 2 penalties in the Chiefs game. AAC just keeps adding strings to his bow. I wouldn’t be surprised if started jumping in the lineout soon.

Wallabies team to play France announced: Will Genia axed

Hodgson is a great player and I am shocked he is not in the team. It Link went for a 5/2 bench I think he would have made it.
I agree with Jeznez, Hooper offers far too much for him to be left out of the squad. Some games it is hard to believe their is only one of him on the field.

Wallabies team to play France announced: Will Genia axed

It was a great game. It had everything including a fight back and last minute try.
Not to whinge but to hear other peoples opinion, was that one of the most one sided ref displays you have seen this year in super rugby?
The first Chiefs try had multiple problems, offside & a knock on.
At one point the Tahs had advantage and the chiefs got the ball and kicked but that counted as advantage for the Tah’s.
The chiefs had a penalty advantage for almost 30m and still kept it.
The Cheifs were offside at the ruck most of the game and nothing was called.

You know it is bad when even the kiwi commentators were sounding shocked at allot of the refs calls.

Did I miss something or am I being one eyed?

Waratahs roll Chiefs at home

That was the difference in the teams on the night. Both played very well in patches but the Tahs got back up and kept going.

Waratahs roll Chiefs at home

Tips: Crusaders, Highlanders (P/P), Waratahs, Hurricanes, Brumbies, Bulls, Sharks

Crusaders at home will be too tough for the Force, although I am picking a margin of less than 5.

Highlanders to take the Red’s apart. The Highlanders and playing well and look like a team, the Reds are completely lost with no
forward power and terrible defence. Until they fix the forwards and defensive laziness they will continue to lose.

Cruden’s back! But it is his first game. The home ground, well the chiefs get weak crowds of around 10,000 plus this is not a tradition home of the chiefs. With their form, expect even less of a crowd. To add insult to injury, the Chiefs aren’t losing in the backs, so Cruden coming in doesn’t fix their problems. Their forwards are losing games for them. Contrast this to the Tahs whose forwards are winning them games and the backs are exploiting the chaos. Tahs by 7. If it was in Sydney, I would pick by 20+.

Super Rugby Expert tips: Round 16

If I remember correctly it is only 45m from Johannesburg to Pretoria. Hardly an altitude adjusting drive.

I wonder if they are Super Rugby’s closest (by distance) teams?

Super Rugby Expert tips: Round 16

I wish him the best of luck. As a Tah’s supporter it will be a shame to see him go, I think he has had a good year and improved his aggression in the tackle contest.
If I could get paid to travel the world playing sport, I would, so I think for him it is a great move.

Is Kane Douglas off to Leinster?

That is amazing West. Truly a great history they have. Anything more recent, say in the last 5 years to be proud of?

The problem with History is it is all the past.

I am a Tahs fan so I have nothing but bitter tears to crow over.

Waratahs self-destruct again

Northern Transvaal, that would be a tough place to have a home game.

Waratahs self-destruct again

Sharks for sure

Waratahs self-destruct again
