I will watch any sport but favourites are Rugby League (Roosters/NSW), Cricket (Preferably tests but love it all), and NFL (Cincinnati Bengals).

Wholeheartedly agree WLC.

There was also the statement “They must wonder what the point of playing four long consecutive days of cricket is, other than to appease those who make the fixtures.” Well maybe for the same reason any of us who play sport do it; because we love our sport and play for our team, whether it be Australia, NSW or local 3rd grade. If everyone quit because they weren’t going to play for Australia it would be a very sad state of affairs.

And, except for those lucky to get into coaching/admin, where else are you going to get paid $100K plus for playing a game you love? Sure you could be a T20 gun for hire, but I reckon many of these guys would lose their edge very rapidly if they started picking and choosing where and when they play. Only the gifted few (like a Chris Gayle or KP) can stroll out whenever they feel like it and hit form.

Cameron White: Why is he out there?

Tim Duncan – No 1 NBA draft pick 1997. Hall of fame. 5 championship rings
Patrick Ewing – Hall of fame
Olden Polynice – First round draft pick 1987. Played 15 years in the NBA
Al Horford – Two championship rings
Carl Herrera – Played at least 9 seasons in the NBA, in two championship winning teams

This was a five minute google search because I’m not an expert in Caribbean NBA stars. As I said in my first post, ‘I remember hearing that a long time ago…..’.

These guys are genuine, long term NBA players. How many Caribbean teenagers got scholarships to US High Schools/Colleges but didn’t make it to the NBA? Which was the original point – that many big, tall, athletic young men, who perhaps once would have aspired to play cricket for the West Indies, decided to chase a different dream.

No one cares about West Indies cricket anymore

I remember hearing that a long time ago. The tall, powerful, athletic build that made many of the young WI men perfect fast bowlers also makes them great basketballers. And basketball pays loads more than cricket.

No one cares about West Indies cricket anymore

I very much agree.

An average spinner won’t suddenly become a matchwinner in India. And an average spinner still won’t be better than a good pace bowler, even on an Indian pitch.

Australia must play their best bowlers against India

Ummm. Didn’t Starc win Test player of the year?

Has Steve Smith become invisible?

If you think Cummins is a genuine all-rounder, consider this.

They say a genuine all-rounder should be able to make his way into a team on either skill. Is any team picking Cummins as a batsman only while he strengthens his body for bowling?

They picked Watson as a batsman only (for better or worse, mainly worse) during his more fragile periods. If Cummins was a genuine number 6, why hasn’t he ever been picked as a batsman only while his bowling workload is being managed?

Why the concentrated push for Hilton Cartwright and not Pat Cummins?

This is a completely pointless article. You are asking a question to which you already know the answer.

You know they aren’t picking Cummins because they are managing his health. Whether you agree with the policy or not doesn’t change the fact that they are restricting his workload.

So your headline is relatively unrelated to your story. Instead of asking “Why are they wrapping Cummins in cotton wool?”, you try to pretend that swapping a fast bowler for a batting all-rounder is a like for like choice.

Why the concentrated push for Hilton Cartwright and not Pat Cummins?

Lehman’s main contribution seems to be getting the team back to drinking more beer. Blokes will be blokes and they’ll drink and have fun.

Don’t get me wrong. I love beer and I’m totally in favour of having some beers and a laugh after the game, but it’s hardly a coaching masterclass. It’s a nice sideline philosophy, but you kinda need a bit more than that to be a great coach.

Is it time for Darren Lehmann to go?

So seeing a bogan put in the effort to excel at a healthy sporting pastime and become successful is a bad thing for our society then???

If in fact there is a “bogan problem” in our country, you’re seriously suggesting that the best way to handle it would be to tell any talented bogans to stop trying, because we don’t want to see them trying to improve their lot in life…….at least until they’ve had some elocution lessons anyway.

Top-order get their time in the middle - now to beat Pakistan

You seem to have taken a dislike to Warner and that is blinding you to any facts. He averages about 50 in tests all up, and averages nearly 40 overseas. That’s good enough for me.

He has taken responsibility for his personal life and has been off the booze for quite a while. He was often a tool when younger but he hasn’t done much wrong in recent years.

And since when does speaking ability have any bearing on test selection. I don’t expect a newsreader to score 100 for Australia any more than I expect our test openers to excel at public speaking.

'Renshaw the Rock' is just what Australia need

Yep. And what got him over the line was the minimal chance of him being on the wrong side of an off-field behavioural issue.

Skipper Smith fails his first test in Sri Lanka

Agreed.

An easy way to look at it is to double the scores. If this was Brisbane or Adelaide and Australia scored 406 to SL’s 234 it would look pretty impressive. This is simply not a high scoring pitch and we almost doubled their score. End of story.

On a deteriorating pitch, people now have SL scoring 250+ in the second innings….please.

Australia's batsmen stumble against spin once more

One of the hypothetical scenarios you mentioned happened in the NFL playoff game between the Bengals and Steelers this year.

Long story short, Bengals one point in front and desperately trying to keep the Steelers out of field goal range. Two consecutive penalties, one justified one questionable, got the Steelers within range and ended the Bengals’ season.

After the first penalty, which resulted in an injury to a Steelers player, a Steelers coach was on the field, not attending to his injured player but instead arguing with and abusing Bengals players. Adam Jones fired up at the coach and received a penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Jones is a hot head, no doubt, but all indications are that the coach should not have been on the field, and certainly shouldn’t have been abusing the Bengals players.

NRL HQ has lost control of the trainers and it doesn't care

Not sure I know what you mean so I’m going to assume not.

Is the little fairly someone who writes or comments on Roar? If so, definitely not me.

Can Jarryd Hayne be our next great keeper-batsman?

I’ve long said loyalty is a luxury, not a necessity.

It’s very easy to stay loyal to Thurston, Smith, Cronk, Boyd, Inglis, Slater – the list goes on.

NSW was great at loyalty when we had Sterling, Daley, Clyde, Roach, ET etc. Those days have gone for now.

When your incumbents (for this and previous years) are guys like Pearce, Farah, Dugan etc, being bullied or shamed by QLD into this mythical loyalty is farcical. If the incumbent is near enough to the best option, by all means stick with them. If there’s a guy in much better form, pick them.

Laurie Daley's the best man to coach NSW, now pick the best team

Klemmer is one of the blokes I’m excited to see in Origin. He’s got the crazy eyes I want in an Origin prop.

If he can keep away from the ref’s whistle he’s going to inflict some pain on the Queenslanders, and he will enjoy every minute of it.

Gillmiester fires up over David Klemmer threat

Definitely something to consider in both selection and planning though. Without checking the stats, I know many games/series have been won or lost on the strength of a field goal kicking option.

While you might not pick a player specifically for their field goal abilities, the team should definitely know who is the go-to man before they take the field. They shouldn’t be guessing who is their best option in the 79th minute.

Moylan the man for the Blues if Origin 1 goes down to the wire

I think you missed the point of the article. The article didn’t say he was better than Farah. It said if they are much the same in terms of ability, which Laurie Daley said they were, why would you pick the one under an injury cloud.

If Robbie Farah's injured why's he been picked for Origin?

Headline in yesterday’s News.com – ‘NSW debutant Dylan Walker to play as fill-in Blues hooker for Origin I’

Paragraph from that article – ‘The selection of Manly utility Walker on the bench has raised the eyebrows of many, but one of his tasks will be to provide cover for Blues No.9 Robbie Farah at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday.’

Yes part of his role will, of course, be to provide cover for a few roles, but the article mentions Farah missing lots of game time and being underdone.

If Robbie Farah's injured why's he been picked for Origin?

Surprised there’s no love for Blocker and Sirro here. When the QLDers talk about their alleged passion and loyalty, It’s guys like these they are talking about. Guys who lift the players around them by their guts and aggression. Guys who seem to grow 6 inches when they put on the rep jersey.

So hard though. Any ‘best of’ NSW team without Sterling and Kenny is unthinkable, but Johns is the man for his generation.

Origin's greatest of all time: Part 1 - New South Wales

Brilliant article, if for no other reason but that you used the word ‘thrice’.

Fancy, but relevant.

David Warner is the best opener across all three formats
