Even without Smith, Queensland’s 17 are more than a match for the Blues

Just out of curiosity, have the NRL ever trialed an interchange system (ala touch footy) in a game? I know refs need to get a feel for the game but maybe if they cut the 2 refs out on the field and just had 2 interchanging then it might help with the fatigue factor.

Refs are the best

No doubt he makes his tackles Tim but the way he retreats puts a lot of pressure on his in and outside men. You might recall the try cordner scored in the last series where cronk was backpedalling close to his line? The try just before halftime in this years first game had Gillett trying to cover Cronk’s man which left a massive gap. Smith rushing up didn’t help but I put it down to a breakdown in communication between Cronk and Gillett. It might sound like I’m doubting the great man but I’m just concerned that the team wernt on the same page in game one and I hope they can fix it up.

State of Origin 2: The definitive stats preview

After watching several replays of the first game (and even going back to previous series) what has stood out to me is Cooper Cronk’s retreating defense. Whilst Gillett was off in the first game with a lot of one on one misses, it was Cronk putting pressure on him by not moving up and keeping the line. Chambers coming over to Cronk’s side will certainly sure it up as O’Neil looked like he had never defended in the centres at this level. Fingers crossed they can all get on the same page in this game and work together more effectively.

Good point regarding chambers. It was quite baffling that he wasn’t playing on his preferred right hand side in game one and surely qld won’t make that same mistake again.

Queensland Maroons announce sweeping changes for Game 2

Great side. Good to see QLD has a fair bit of depth these days and game one should be a cracker. I’m sure the guys picked with the loyalty factor in mind will be keen to repay the selectors by doing their jobs.

Great article!

The most anticipated clash to reach the Octagon

The focus should be on international league and they shouldn’t even be discussing state selections. As everyone knows, one week is a long time in rugby league so eight months is an eternity.

Boyd Cordner in the mix for Blues captaincy

Just to clear this one up, smith kicked the ball on captain Lockyer’s instruction. The ball was suppose to go straight up so the NSW forwards would cop it but poor gidley coped the brunt.

The truth may hurt, Andrew Fifita, but you need to hear it

I’ll add Jack Bird to your list as well Rob. I find Gallen’s comments a bit ridiculous considering his side is known for it.

Scuffles worse than punching: Gallen

Have you seen many storm games this year SVB? Some of the tries thy have scored (especially their wingers) have been brilliant.

Storm push the envelope better than any other NRL team

Greg, it sounds like you have been taking too much notice to Brad Fittler on the Sunday footy show. 2 weeks in a row he has run a highlights package of penalties that should have gone against the storm and yet you could find the same argument against every team in the comp. Storm bashing has become the norm by some journalists and I would much rather the Andrew Johns analysis of applauding their winning culture and mentality.

Storm push the envelope better than any other NRL team

My biggest gripe with the Broncos form slump is that Bennett said that he saw this coming and was expecting it. If you see something coming and expect it to come shouldn’t you do something to prevent it or even minimize it from having a lasting effect!? The Broncos forwards are all similar in body shape and although it seemed to work last year (when we had big centres) it isn’t doing the job this year. Surely, there are some bigger bodies running around in the QLD cup.

Bucking hell! Why have the Broncos dropped so far off the pace?

Looking forward to Nappa coming into the qld side next year…

Origin: Who needs punches? Raw dripping hate is back!

This is the same Gus Gould that 24 hrs earlier wrote that the qld team was well past their best and were ready to be beaten. The same Gus Gould that throughout 77minutes of the game said that NSW were playing superior footy and would win. It seems that he covered all bases so that he could do the “I told you so” speech in his post match address.

The Gallen and Farah Origin legacy: Selfless or selfish?

What’s your point squidward? Gallen has had ample opportunity to congratulate Smith publicly but has instead chosen to winge about how he manipulates the referees.

Smith shows respect ahead of Gallen Origin milestone

More class shown by Smith. Sums up the difference between the two state captains really because I don’t recall any congratulatory messages from Gallen re: Smith’s last game milestone.

Smith shows respect ahead of Gallen Origin milestone

I might be missing the point but I fail to see how what maguire said was in any reference to the gender of the reporter. His comments were ludacris because he spoke of drowning someone but if he spoke of drowning her because she was a woman then I could understand where you are coming from.

Sport and our attitudes towards women

I did and was stunned he avoided charge over that one. The review panel said there was separation of the arm but they must be the only ones who thought there was.

How is touching a referee worse than stomping a player?

Just to clarify Tim, is the Smith incident you are referring to the one where he placed his hand on the refs back who was all up in the ruck and blocking Smith’s access to the play the ball?

How is touching a referee worse than stomping a player?

I must be in the minority because I thought origin one was a gripping contest that had me on the edge of my seat for the entire contest. Conditions dictated how the game was played and accordingly there wasn’t too much ball movement. If they had ruled the Morris effort a try then I think a lot of people knocking the game would be changing their tune completely.

Make Origin a showcase and ban the cretins

Did we see all of the angles though Epiquin because Tony Archer was adamant the correct call was made on the footy show yesterday?

The Bunker is stuffed, and here's how to scrap it

Exactly Pedro. Here’s hoping they let the game flow again but I doubt they will.

Queensland team for State of Origin Game 1: Expert reaction

Both states have picked strong teams/squads but ultimately what the first game will come down to is how the refs officiate. NSW will want slow play the balls to take advantage of their big forwards and QLD will need minimal interference in the ruck so thurston and cronk can utilize their superior back line. We saw what happened in game three last year when both teams were allowed to play football.

Whilst the walker selection is a little perplexing, does anyone think Daley might go with Dugan at fullback and Moylan as the utility?
