Given that the laws of Rugby are generally internally consistent, it seems odd to me that a missed penalty or missed field goal where the ball goes dead will result in a dropout restart and the kicking team the generally regains possession. Why is that odd, because unlike a conversion attempt, a missed penalty goal or drop goal can result in play continuing unless the ball goes dead from the kick. Contrast that with a kick in general play going dead, the result is a scrum where the kick was taken.
Make that the outcome of a missed penalty or drop goal and the attacking team may well reconsider taking either option if the odds are against success. A minor law change, it makes the laws more consistent and there may be less cynical penalty attempts or drop goal attempts.

Speed up or fall behind: It's time for a 'check, check' on Australian rugby

One of the glories of rugby football is that when the ball is in play, it’s in contest … surely the answer to solving a number of problems with the game would be that the game clock only runs when the ball is in contest (similar to Australian football). We’d get 80 minutes of ball in play, defences would tire and the game likely become less congested.

Just how much time is being lost in a game of rugby?

Having watched a fair bit of most of the Super Rugby Pacific games last week, I can confidently say that I didn’t see that much inspiring in the NZ games …

'Where are the game changers?': ABs greats savage Aussie SRP teams, while claims Kiwis 'stunk up the joint'

Will’s analysis is great, but I disagree that you can rely on the TMO to bring up foul play in all instances … witness the leading elbow to Tate McDermott’s neck by the French try-scorer. Why wasn’t that reviewed???

WILL GENIA: Why I'm impressed with Rennie, and how we shape up against All Blacks

Not one female athlete mentioned in this article … come on???

Margaret Court, Heather McKay, Shane Gould, Serena Williams, Lauren Jackson, Martina Navritilova, Layne Beachley, Steph Gilmore, and the list could go on and on.

The GOAT: Who really is the greatest athlete of our generation?

Quite frankly this article is far too generous to Kafer and Kearns, dinosaurs who should be extinct…

TV commentary is a big part of rugby's revival

Craig, lots of great comments. 2 things I would add … the “expert” commentators on Fox Sports, they love the sound of their own voice … it’s time they were superannuated. Get some fresh eyes, and preferably add some female voices … if it can be done for the NBA, it can happen for Rugby.
The second thing is, give the DJ a miss at the matches, when I am there with my friends it is during the breaks in play that we like to discuss what we have been watching, you can’t do that with 100dB of Neil Diamond being rammed into your ears.

How to improve the match-day experience

Could we at least make sure the score is reported correctly???

The Wrap: Super Rugby AU comes of age in Canberra thriller

I’ve really enjoyed the series Jeremy. You’ve made some great points.
But I do think there is one basic thing that needs to change with the game itself.
I have been a Rugby fan (many would say fanatic) for most of my life. I attended the Waratahs v Force last Saturday night, and quite frankly I was bored for substantial periods.
It has always struck me that Rugby’s laws are internally consistent (with some obvious exceptions such as play can continue after a missed penalty but you can’t charge down … cf with a conversion attempt, similarly a missed drop or penalty goal that goes dead is followed by a drop out back to the attacking team, when if it had been a “kick in general play” it would have been a scrum to the defending team, but I digress…) Once principal defining characteristic of Rugby is a continual contest for possession, yet the ball is only in play for less than 50% of time. I would make the referees continue play at all times, ignoring trainers on the field until it was certain that it would be dangerous for play to continue. If a team doesn’t pack a scrum within say 20 seconds, the referee should give a free kick to the other team. All time wasting should be eliminated from the game.

How to fix Australian rugby, Part 6: Fixing the game itself

Great article Fully Tragic. I thought it telling that one great, recent captain had not signed the letter. I see another has backflipped on the letter.

An open letter to the Wallabies' captains

When are all the pundits going to recognise that Foley’s problems and “poor” form are caused by the halfback. Foley stands deep behind Phipps so that he has some chance of finding the pass, when Genia is on he has the defence on him quickly because Genia always takes a step before passing. Cure our ills at number 9 and we are well on the way to bringing back Bill.

Righto coach, let’s see the Wallabies' first XV
