Nah. He’s got a clear rebuild mandate and they are are competitive even if they’re not winning. Honestly I think they’re over performing at the moment if anything

Eight quick takes from AFL Round 3

FOXTEL are a bunch of a holes.

I live in London and they’ve taken over the international streaming service as part of the new broadcast deal. Last year the service was awesome – live and on demand on any device you wanted. Offline downloads for the commute.

This year? Results given away on the replay page. No live games on smart TVs. No offline downloads. No quarter by quarter replays. You can’t even properly fast forward and rewind. And best of all…they more than doubled the price.

Total and utter a holes.

Sorry that last bit was a bad joke. I just wonder if the recent recruiting has been up to scratch for the hawks?

I reckon the problem here is if you guys have a truly dire year then a lot of guys on the cusp of retirement jump early – you could lose Burgoyne, Gibson, hodge, roughy etc while there aren’t obvious and ready replacements available. Could mean multiple years in the basement.

It’s so sad and I hope he gets back to his best but rough looks like a man who has just recovered from cancer. I remember the 2014 GF when he took out hannebery at a bounce in the forward fifty. That hit. Hard and fair and it shook him up and hannas barely had a thing to say for the rest of the afternoon. He was an incredible player but that ruthlessness doesn’t look to be in his game anymore.

The only solution as far as I can see is to bring back Beau Muston.

Yeah – enough with the ‘mental scars’ already

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s not true

Clubs are playing Russian roulette with long-term contracts

Thanks for JPK – I reckon he might turn out well for us. 😉

I remember arguing at the time we recruited Tippett that we didn’t need him and it would force us to shed players who’d earned their stripes. I stand by that.

Buddy? He’s just so good to watch. He’s been priceless for AFL in Sydney and I’m more than happy he came to the club. He’s done his part. I think his team mates would accept his contract – he’s a once in a generation talent; he never lacks for effort; and he leads by example. Players understand what it takes to trade in someone like that.

Tippett? Yeah no.

Did it destroy bloods culture? I don’t know. Maybe. But Sydney are still a factory for producing talent from unlikely places – rampey, allir, papley, etc etc. They’re still a remarkably young team across the park. And our game style has also changed dramatically from the days of yore – we’re not a hard nosed defensive unit any more and teams like the dogs trump us for attack on the ball and tackling intensity. And we’ve been losing the close ones for a while now. I don’t think all that can be blamed on ‘culture’.

Clubs are playing Russian roulette with long-term contracts

I agree with this. I think it’s the NBA that restricts the lengths of contracts teams can offer for the very reason discuss in the article – in case of injury, loss of form, etc. Sometimes clubs have to be saved from themselves.

Clubs are playing Russian roulette with long-term contracts

All in all a great round – a lot of games I thought would be one sided turned out close. Props to the Saints and to North.

Sheesh – have the real Port Adelaide finally showed up?

Crows look great. Their ball movement was terrific. Talk of a limited midfield was obviously premature. Cameron, milera, knight, aitkins- all those guys they had rotating through there were terrific.

Swans – agree the depth is looking shaky. Tippett. I just. Does the guy know how to stay on the park? Parker, Jack – the core of the midfield just looked slow next to their dogs counterparts. Work to be done. And jeeze – the dogs look hot again this year. Will be very hard to beat. Murphy dishing it out making them even more lethal.

Great round, intriguing season already.

Nine quick takes from AFL Round 2

I thought it was shocking. I was on the train on the way back from central London watching the replay and I made some forceful comments on the matter. Other mystified/offended commuters can contend to this fact.

Nine quick takes from AFL Round 2

All you want is consistency – that call was a shocker for two reasons. 1. It was a shocker. 2. It wasn’t called for any other similar tackle at any moment in any other game all weekend.

I’ve said my piece on the umpiring in that other thread about the dogs v swans game so I won’t repeat it. But what josh says here is bang on – umpiring has to be professionalised. It’s the only solution.

Nine quick takes from AFL Round 2

I agree with this Matty. And not just the season on season rule changes, the week to week emphasis on different rules needs to go. Teams and fans across the board deserve to know what the rules are, and not have to adjust to weekly clamp downs and interpretation changes.

Is it really 25 playing 22?

They’ve lacked consistency for a while now if you look at most of their wins against quality opposition and they’re based off blistering first quarters. We haven’t been winning the close ones for a while now and it needs to be addressed

Is it really 25 playing 22?

Sorry Dougie – it’s not good enough to call us whingers. Of course he swans need to look at their game, and I don’t think it was the reason we lost – but the umpiring was amateur. A titanic struggle like that deserves better quality officiating and the AFL needs to sort it out. I’m a fair minded fan, and I shouldn’t have to suffer that kind of difference in interpretation between weeks in the season in such a tight match. The richest sport in the land cannot continue to have amateur, part time umpires – its untenable.

Is it really 25 playing 22?

Yeah exactly. Grundy dropping that intercept mark. So many examples where they didn’t help themselves

Is it really 25 playing 22?

I wrote a long and considered reply but it was eaten when I pressed send. Sigh.

In summary:
– we lost it with our poor disposal in the 2nd and 3rd
– the umpiring was shockingly bad
– I’ve been saying ‘knkcoked out in the tackle’ should be incorrect disposal for years, but I’ve never seen it paid until tonight
– so many howlers tonight – that last HTB against jones was a shocker
– I don’t blame the umpires for our loss, but it certainly leaves a bitter taste in the mouth when you’re wondering if you know the rules or not
– the richest sport in the land cannot continue to have umpires who are not full time and professional. It is an an untenable situation.

End rant indeed.

Is it really 25 playing 22?

Look, while I don’t buy into the argument the umps cost the swans the GF, or last nights game; I did find myself screaming at the television on a few occasions in both games.

Last night, the awful 2nd and 3rd quarters, and our terrible delivery by foot cost us. It’s been a problem for a while, and we need to increase disposal efficiency. That’s why we lost.

But…jeeze. Last night was one of those games where I questioned if I actually knew the rules!! What was going on with HTB? For years I’ve been saying that the ball coming out in the tackle is a massive crock, and that it should be called incorrect disposal. All of a sudden last night it was!! That call against Mills was rubbish. Allir was very stiff a couple of times. Dogs got away with a bunch of stuff. That last HTB on jones was shockingly bad.

So, even if it didn’t effect the result, in my view umpiring that inexplicable and inconsistent certainly leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I don’t think there’s a conspiracy or conscious bias, but the AFL surely needs to do some thinking about properly professionalising umpiring. The richest sport in the land surely can’t go on like this.

Rant over indeed.

Is it really 25 playing 22?

Yeah I agree with this. Our delivery forward of centre was shocking last week. That had the effect of dragging Buddy up the ground to ty and get involved and throwing out our structures. This is a young team and it needs time – especially without ramps, alir, papley, mcviegh.

Dogs are smooth and precise with ball in hand and should capitalise

Western Bulldogs vs Sydney: Friday Night Forecast

Great article Ryan. I think I said in your danger v fyfe article that we were due a brownlow bolter – Bont being one of them. Nice to see a Buckland justification for it!

Marcus Bontempelli will end the year as the AFL's best player

Oh yeah I hadn’t clocked that. Whoops!

2017 AFL preview series: Carlton Blues - 17th

Agree with this. Should be a pretty dire year, but nothing is really expected.

Carlton should provide a cautionary tale for anyone looking to land Fyfe at year’s end. Totally different ball game for their list management over the last few years if they’d built around Kennedy rather than Judd.

2017 AFL preview series: Carlton Blues - 17th

Yeah good point. I guess guys like Petracca, Salem, Jetta, Bugg will have to come on and provide that pace injection

St Kilda or Melbourne, who's ready to play finals?

I’m tipping Melbourne. Can’t go past that midfield – jones and Lewis enforcing, Oliver, Bradshaw, and Viney free to do their thing. Gawn dishing it out. I think they could dominate if things went right.

But you’re absolutely right on the psychological point Josh. I was really disappointed to see Gary Lyon ripping into Watts in the media. The guy has had enough external pressure on him for three players – he’s shown he doesn’t react to it well. Don’t know why a club great is out there saying all that stuff to the media instead of pulling him to one side and having a word. Stuff like that could eat into the team as a whole psychologically – I don’t think it’s necessary.

Saints look good to me, but I tend to agree with Ryan’s article the other day that they might take a step back this year. Damn I wish the swans hadn’t let go of Membrey…

Thanks mate. Just drives me nuts!

These Dogs are top-four bound: No Hawthorn haze for the reigning premiers

I’ve said this to him today. He’s been going on about it for months. But sure I’ll stop.

Sigh. I haven’t gotten into an argument on the internet for years. Ive forgotten how pointless it is.
