Except for the old enemy in South Africa we have been the best rugby nation in the world for over 100 years.

We, as a nation, simply want to win more then other nations want to beat us.

Why daylight between All Blacks and the rest?

James.

I do understand that point and concede it. I do wager that any game between the Pies and Swans would bring in a ton of supporters from both Melbourne and Sydney you could play the game in 100 000 seat stadium and sell it out I’d wager.

What I was saying is that considering the point that New Zealanders do not travel much to support their sporting teams that figure would have been made up almost entirely of Brumbies supporters.

Considering how small RU is in Australia the figure is a very big positive for the sport I support. It would be like AFL managing to get 35 000 people to a game at the stadium in Wellington if it ever happened I’m sure some AFL supporters would be happy as well

Ben.

I found it interesting that the highest head count for any sport in Canberra was RU. The fact that us kiwis are not as rich as your Aussies so are unlikely to travel over to Australia even for a final suggests the strength of RU in Canberra is not to bad.

I wish you luck with your argument with Replubican, he hates everything New Zealand, and by default everything Rugby Union.

Since AFL supporters are so fond of stats and facts
Highest crowd at a AFL game in Canberra
14,922 (June 4, 2006). AFL Kangaroos v Sydney Swans

Rugby union
28,753 – 2004 Super 12 Final, ACT Brumbies vs Canterbury Crusaders

Rugby league
26,476 – 2010 NRL season Semi finals, Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers[3]

Soccer (association football)
20,032 – Asian Cup Qualifier, Socceroos vs Kuwait

I will let the numbers speak for themselves

Katipo.

I agree a nice mix of local derbies followed by a international comp would be perfect.

4 conferences – Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina, 5 teams per conference
– Each Conference plays each other and crowns a national champion and 2 runner ups
The top 8 teams go into a cross conference round robin playing for a super champion
The bottom 12 teams go into a cross conference playing off for a best of the rest type of reward

Its a very basic model and could probably do with a lot more thinking and rework but it’s how I envisioned the competitions working.
Whichever system is picked the system has to be simple so all us stupid folk can follow what’s going on

IRB must use club rugby to expand

What the writer is trying to say is – The AFL is prepared to accept the fact that converting Sydney is a long term project aimed at convincing the children of die hard league fans of the superiority of AFL over League.

Good luck with that.
