This list should include Ross Edwards at cover. During his career in the 1970s he was often the only fieldsman in front of gully on the off-side. Why? Because he was that good. Ask his captain, Ian Chappell.

Australia’s best fielding XI since 1970

The fact that Lumumba said some nice things about Buckley does not negate how Buckley and others treated him. When players leave clubs or retire, they often say nice things. It’s standard PR bull. Those defending Buckley should read Lumumba’s ten posts on social media. He had an eight hour attempted mediation session with Buckley where they thoroughly discussed how badly he’d been treated, including the use of the nickname Chimp. Buckley subsequently denied that he had ever heard of the issues. Lumumba also said he was told he was sacked for criticising Eddie “I’m not a racist, but” Maguire. Whatever Collingwood is like now, the fact is that the club has a long and despicable history of racism. Nicky Winmar, Michael Long ring a bell? One of the last, if not the last, Victorian AFL clubs to have an indigenous player on its list. Wonder why?

Leaving out Sydney Barnes is unthinkable. There’s a good argument to be made that he’s the best bowler the world has ever seen. We often overlook his incredible achievements because of the era he played in and the fact that preferred League cricket to first class for financial reasons. Played until he was 50, took thousands of wickets and had a life-time bowling average of about 6. He took 7 wickets per Test. Would have played more but he was unpopular selectors and administrators. Richie Benaud picked him in his all-time Test eleven, along with Malcolm Marshall and one Dennis Keith Lillee.

As I said above, the AFL has a long term contract to play the GF at the G to protect the MCG’s financial position. Don’t need a wider conspiracy to understand why it will be hard to shift the match.

You’re being a bit harsh on Hayden Bunton aren’t you? He won three Brownlows. Rumour is that he lost the fourth because after one game where he was clearly BOG he told the umpire that his performance was worth the votes. Some people think he’s the best player ever.

The AFL has a contract to play the GF at the MCG as well as one preliminary final for *decades*. It’s related to ensuring that the major redevelopments of the G over the year were financially sustainable. The Victorian government effectively has control of the MCG trust, so it would take something truly exceptional to move the finals away from the G. Not impossible, just not likely.

Perth is the most isolated major city in the world. Many Sandgropers think they’re very, very special as a result. Plenty of calls for secession over the years. Now they just welcome white exiles from South Africa and England with open arms. Birds of a feather and all that.

The AFL have obviously already thought of this, so don’t count your money yet. The possibility of SA and WA lifting restrictions is presumably why they’re only going to schedule matches in 4 week blocks.

Melbourne will be the largest city in Australia in a few years. Culture capital, sporting capital, entertainment capital, best food in the country. Most ethnically diverse and progressive city in the country. What is Sydney good for? High real estate prices and right wing shock jocks. What’s the rest of the country good for? Pauline Hanson and a complete lack of intelligent life forms.

You need to check your facts on pitch doctoring. Since Warne retired we’ve learned that in some instances Indian curators were ordered to prepare the two sides of the pitch differently at each end. The off side for right handers was kept dry and dusty, which naturally helped India’s spinners. They deliberately kept more grass on the leg side for right handers knowing that Warne preferred to bowl a leg/outside leg line. Desperate stuff but pretty effective.

As for Australia tailoring pitches to suit Warne, if that’s the case then how did McGrath take 500+ Test wickets, Brett Lee 300 and Gillespie 200 while playing at the same time as Warne?

BTW, if you want a country that does dodgy pitches, come to New Zealand, where subcontinental teams often magically face green tops or regularly get sent to Dunedin where it’s freezing. No wonder NZ has a ‘strong’ home record.

Did Shane Warne conquer Test cricket in the sub-continent?

While there may be some scope for a small reduction of clubs in both the AFL and NRL on financial grounds, the idea of a wholesale cull in either competition is seriously flawed. Revenue from media is tied to the number of games played: the more games the AFL or NRL can offer TV, the more bucks they receive. A twelve team AFL comp would have 132 games a season, which is 66 less than they have now. That would mean a 33% drop in TV revenue. It’s not going to happen, and that’s financial reality Emorej.

What both competitions might do is find other ways of cutting expenses. For example, most AFL teams are currently spending a fortune in their football departments, that is, on coaches and analysts. Several clubs have dozens of people working in these roles. Take a look at the coach’s box in some AFL games — you will see 10-15 guys on lap tops during the game. AFL journos are already speculating that the AFL will enforce permanent cutbacks in this area, which will save clubs millions a year. If AFL games adopt 16 minute quarters permanently, then there could be a reduction in the playing list at each club. That would also save plenty.

Both the AFL and NRL must make serious cuts to clubs

Jones was dropped in order to shoehorn Steve Waugh back into the team. There was a behind-the-scenes argument that Jones’ batting figures were inflated by high scores in dead rubbers. The double century he made against the West Indies at home was a key example. He also made 180 against England when he should have been given out caught behind down the leg said when on 5. The view was that the team needed somebody who was more reliable in a crisis if they were ever going to beat the Windies, hence the move to SW. As for Mark’s infamous tour of Sri Lanka where he got four ducks in a row, he probably survived because apparently they were all bad decisions.
