Well reasoned regarding the Maynard – Brayshaw incident Tim. Once he chose to jump into the path of an opposition player he’s given up any ability to mitigate the impact and thereby his breach his duty of care to the opposition player, who’s not expecting someone to come flying through and smack him in the head after he disposed of the ball.
You’re entitled to smother, just as you are still entitled to bump and tackle. But just because you’re entitled to attempt a ‘football act’ doesn’t mean you’re entitled to put your shoulder through another blokes head if you get the timing wrong.

Finals Fix: Manic Magpies expose Dees' massive flaw - but here's why they should have to win it all without Maynard

If West Coast finish last, yes could see them doing a trade to get multiple first round selection but North don’t need to. If North finish last, they’re banking Reid and then going to the draft with Port’s first round pick (which they got as part of the JHF trade) plus any compo if McKay walks as a free agent.

TOM MORRIS: Harley Reid is a generational talent who could deliver elusive flag to GWS. How ambitious will the Giants be?

Refreshing to see North not being targeted for once!

Welcome Tasmania, but the AFL should be a 16-team competition so three clubs must go

Entertaining read Tim. The other positive for North is that everyone played their role – there were no passengers. Even a flaky player like Stephenson, didn’t have a great game, but still put his head over the footy and laid five tackles on an off day for him. Was good to see!

Footy Fix: The Shinboner Spirit returns! Clarko's first masterpiece gets Roos back to their roots

“It was sad to see Jy Simpkin be made captain, when the bold choice of Luke Davies-Uniacke was there begging to be made.”??
What a bizarre statement. No one trains and runs harder at North than Simpkin. LDU is the more talented player but when has that been the prerequisite to be captain…

AFL season preview: Melbourne and Geelong are proven heavyweights, while Brisbane only wish they were

Rubbery figures in code war articles, now there’s something new! Not sure where you came up with the 23m difference? figures I’ve seen and used in other articles on this site highlight a 10m difference in favour of NRL, but that’s only a 10% difference over a season. Twice as many people attend an AFL match vs an NRL – I think that’s a better measure of a dedicated supporter base…

Is the AFL really having an impact above the Barassi line?

As a North supporter it’s nice to hear some positivity!

I think turning a future second and third into Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker is an absolute steal – Logue was a top ten pick, who finished 6th in Freo’s B&F and is just about to hit his prime at 24. Adds size and talent to the back six next year and for the long term. Tucker is handy depth and experience for a club that lacks both.

I feel like like the footy world forgot that Tom Boyd walked after just one year with all the carry on with JHF. There has to be more to this then he got homesick and frustrated with North. Would not be surprised to hear Port have been in contact with him throughout the year and I wouldn’t put it past them to have spoken to him prior to the 2021 draft – “Just go to North for a year, we’ll bring you back home, it’s all sorted.” North were perhaps foolish to pick him up but they’ve at least walked away square in terms of draft value – though really should have taken the deal with Adelaide last year…

A good season for North next year would be limit scores against, no blowouts and see development in Phillips, Powell, Curtis, Goater etc and hopefully might threaten to get out of the bottom four…. (small wins) – Great year would be TT, Stepho and LDU absolutely tear it up and Zurhaar and Larks kick 50 each… one can hope….

It's not all doom and gloom at North Melbourne

Their injuries have exacerbated North’s lack of depth – take three out of five of the best placed B&F finishers from any club and they would struggle (McDonald, Anderson, Dumont). Fixture hasn’t been kind to North either (played the top 4). Too many caveats at the moment to really get a read on just how bad North is (worst side this year Vs worst side this decade etc).

North Melbourne aren't as bad as you think

I think only getting in a 2nd round pick for him is the ridiculous part – with the way the ball comes into North’s forward line (or the lack of it) even Brown would be having a very lean year.

North Melbourne aren't as bad as you think

Saints received more money from the AFL than any other club apart from the Suns last year. They’ve had a whole wedge of Melbourne to themselves for decades to gain supporters and build a base etc and have failed to capitalise on it. They’re the epitome of failure in the VFL/AFL.

If we're moving a team to Tassie, St Kilda are the obvious candidate

Great article as always Josh – will miss your wit and insight next year!

As a North supporter I’m rapt with Phillips and Powell but find it odd we’ve taken 4/5 similar players, at least positionally. I was hoping for at least one tall and maybe a rebounding defender type.

2020 AFL draft: Club-by-club review, my take on every team

Still too early to judge Richmond.

Part of how great a dynasty is is it’s prolonged impact on the game – how it impacts on how the game is played and coached. Worth remembering that both other recent premiership winning coaches (Simpson and Beveridge) were assistants at Hawthorn.

However, in terms of the most impressive dynasty it’s still Brisbane for mind – mainly due to the AFL being even more Victorian/Melbourne centric back then, as well as the great teams they beat and competed against – they beat an Essendon side which should have established a dynasty, as well as repeatedly going up against a gun Collingwood outfit with a star studded Port Adelaide team to contend with as well who finally ended their run. Geelong’s probably next having to contend with a strong St Kilda side, Collingwood and upcoming Hawthorn.

While still impressive, Richmond’s run so far just doesn’t have the same feel to it – though time may tell.

Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn or Richmond: Which dynasty has been the best?

“Gutsy” – having or showing courage, determination, and spirit.

Good article but I think you’ve failed to prove why it wasn’t a gutsy win, purely based on your narrow interpretation of gutsy, which seems too focussed on the physical exertion of players and associated with effort.

It takes “guts” or courage for a coaching group to change up how you’re going to play your rucks, change your forward structure etc. Takes determination to remain mentally focussed and perform in an interstate final and spirit was self-evident.

Collingwood's win was great, but don't call it 'gutsy'

North must really rate Larkey…. or have something up their sleeves on the trade front?

Trading Ben Brown could make or break Rhyce Shaw's coaching career

0% chance he’s going to Port or Brisbane. Gold Coast is an interesting call but I think he’ll stay put in Melbourne, regardless if he stays at North. The Kangas need a player like him – quality wingman, but he clearly has let Shaw down – reportedly with his defensive efforts. Probably shouldn’t read too much into this but considering he’s already at his third club with talk about going to a fourth looks like he’s not easy to work with.

I could see him thriving on field at Carlton, Collingwood or Melbourne – all these sides could use a bit of polish and run on the outside, but do they want the possible baggage?

The three scenarios for Jared Polec and North Melbourne
