Cricket guy. Bats 8 and doesn’t bowl.

Great read. I have a feeling us Aussie’s will essentially respond with “it’s ok as long as it’s only us doing it”

Or to quote a recent Victorian grade cricket viral video, “it’s simple, Chalk, stay in your crease mate!”

Unsportsmanlike, un-Australian or just part of the game - how will everyone react when an Aussie 'Mankads' someone?

This is an interesting point, I mostly agree. Though would one dead rubber test in Sydney against this SA lineup have Morris any more prepared for India in India? I’m excited to see the next 6-8 weeks unfold that’s for sure.

'Having a look': Selecting Lance Morris for New Year's Test would send wrong message

X factor is hard to quantify isn’t it, hard to disagree with this thinking. I’d be all-in on Morris if he gets through a full shield season at anything like the level he’s at now. Shaun Tait comes to mind as a poor example of raw pace being fast tracked in red ball stuff but Lee, Cummins and plenty more over the years support fast tracking genuine pace. And he’s in form too. Excellent problem to have.

He may be destined to be a backup for most of his career – but a backup to this crop is no indictment!

Yes that last 24 hours I have seen this narrative more and more. I think you may be right. Excited to see him if he debuts no doubt.

Thanks Choppy. We’re spoiled for choice aren’t we

Thank you Tony, really enjoyed having a bit more room to add detail than your typical Twitter/Roar comment section.

Especially on the sub-continent! Imagine the bowling + batting depth you could play around with two genuine pace bowling all-rounders. Could play a third spinner and still bat deep with 6 genuine bowling options.

I think the current mail on Jhye is that he hasn’t built up red ball fitness. He is pretty high up the pecking order when fit I believe.

Neser has 24 wickets at 14.5 this season, compared to Morris’ 27 at 18.4. Surely Morris has to do it for more than 4 games to jump him in the queue.

Fair enough looking for a point of difference from the other seamers, I’d lean towards the best bowlers being picked, not the most different from each other, but I prefer that as a line of thinking to suggesting a short burst of brilliance from Morris has him jumping ahead of anyone else.

No arguing Morris is having an incredible season, is a deserving member of the Test squad, and has a longer term future for Australia than Neser who is 8 years older. I don’t think it’s his time yet but would be very excited to see him rip in next week if he’s given his shot.

Agree to an extent Don; Morris has had a very good 4 games to start the current Shield season. Contrast to Michael Neser who has delivered the same quality (139 red ball wickets at under 20) across 4 seasons now (since beginning of 17/18 Shield).
Neser has been producing at the same level Morris touched for 4 games this year for 4 seasons now. Morris will get his time – it shouldn’t be now imo.

India: yes sure, no proven alternatives so experience + familiarity w India makes perfect sense for him to play, despite poor Test record.

England: not so much. Renshaw averaging 45 in England in County cricket with 5 tons & Harris averaging 47 in County cricket with 6 tons. Maybe Warner beats up on County attacks too (if he did – he’d have my support!) but you can’t justify having Warner in the Aussie XI in the Ashes imo.

Lots of 37yo blokes have families + jobs. Touch off the mark to throw the family into this one.

I took it more as a sign Agar ahead of Hardie in all-rounder stakes than anything else. The double benefit of all-rounder + 2nd spinner makes sense there, and while Agar can definitely bat a bit he’s got a bit to prove as a top 7 at Int level.

You’re right, the one clip I saw of him bowling to poor Cam Green was a bit one sided 😁

Surprised to see no mention in the last ~48 hours of Neser to bat at 7? 2x shield 100’s and a FC average north of 40 the last 12 months.

Not convinced Morris has earned the right to leapfrog all the other seamers at this stage. I was always under the assumption he was only in the squad for a bit of experience, but even more so to give the batters some wheels to face in the nets preparing for Nortje & co.

I’d go slightly different if Renshaw to play… Renshaw to open, Khawaja back to the middle order (Khawaja at 5 and Head to 6?) Renshaw was opening with Ussie in the middle order for Qld in the Shield so far this year.

Think Carey to 6 and Agar at 7 is more likely. A bit disappointing to see Neser not considered in a bowling all-rounder role given his solid Shield returns with the stick this season & last, Neser at 7 I’d be happy with too.
