Im quite glad that you accept that this is a sydney website. Hopefully others will do the same.
THere are large parts of NSW where football refers to AFL.
However i continually refer to AFL as football as it proves to many people that it does create confusion, and i only usually do use it when talking to people on this site that i know are fervent soccer zealots who call soccer, football all the time no matter how much confusion it causes.
As you can see in the post directly above your own, i referred to the sport as AFL when normally i would call it football.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
I have not stated anywhere that supporting the Aussie WC bid makes one an ignorant bogan, unlike some people have in the reverse. In fact i dont even refer to the Aussie WC bid at all.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
Perhaps you could help me out with some areas for improvement? After all that is one of the aims of this site.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
I call it soccer like most Australians as it provides disambiguation.
The article is not aimed at convincing people to host a WC in Qatar either. It is pointing out the misconceived image that many people have of soccer. It is not set to provoke, simply inform.
As Lowy said, “It is a World Cup for all of Australia, not just soccer”. The result affects the entire sporting landscape of Australia, the federal and state budgets, and the general portrayal of the world.
I am currently writing a rather interested piece about the AFL to be on the Roar in about a week.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
Oh …
the article is not actually about why Qatar should not host the soccer world cup. It is about the reasons being given as to why it should not be held there.
I know several people who think a Qatari soccer WC would be great. Mind you they are based in Kuwait/Dubai/Iran…
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
Sorry. I perhaps should have waited till tomorrow and edited it a bit, but i am rather busy tonight.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
The article doesn’t state that any other sport is more embracing. Simply that soccer so often exaggerates the point to which it embraces them all.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
Yes. It is very suprising that the posters above all claim to be of a higher intellect, but resort to petty put downs rather than debating the argument at hand. If i was a doctor i would diagnose them with a mild case of schizophrenia as they all do really believe that every article written by a non-soccer zealot is out to get them.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
And how much of the worlds population is Western? Does that make it a world game then?
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
An article pointing out the misconceptions that many deluded people on here have about soccer.
Yes i spent my time writing about it, all 10 min.
Qatar and the fraudulent FIFA image
Throughout its history football has been played by people with a wide range of cultural backgrounds. At the elite level these include DiPierdomenico, Long, Koutoufides, Brown … Please don’t assume that simply because it is played professionally in one country that it is only played by one culture.
Perhaps you could watch the next International Cup where the style of football played by each team is heavily influenced by that countries culture, and societal values.
Yes, those negatives about the Qatari infrastructure have been raised, but also the points i have mentioned above were also raised.
Open your mind and you find that what sport you follow does NOT define who you are and what your thoughts on other cultures/religions/societies are.

I feel that league will always be overshadowed by union and forever lurking in the shadows.
Aussie rules is a completely unique game, that is 100% Australian!
Both sports are going about growing in very different ways.
What the AFL has to do to become king
We have been trying to think of new names for it. I think it is suitable having a different name for the sport in each country, for the time being.
Ie south africans call it footywild,
Or perhaps we could call it ROOball, or Sherrin..
whatever it is called it will still be in conflict with calling the game football in most of australia.
What the AFL has to do to become king
A conference system in two years time would help make the fixture a lot more equal. Conference is easy if they have say 3 groups of 6. Play everyone once, and each team in your group twice. Top 2 from each, and then the 2 best 3rd placed teams.
Getting rid of victorian teams is tricky. Is is best to wait until our population allows more teams, merge teams, or kick them out completely…
What the AFL has to do to become king
Yeah its only possible if the stadiums are big enough.
Id say 85,000 to 90,000 capacity is the minimum, and then costs, security and all the other stuff comes into it.
What the AFL has to do to become king
Would you support an AFL Grand Final in Sydney between the Swans and GWS in 2018?
I would. I cannot fathom the outrage if they were forced to play at the MCG.
We are lucky the same hasnt happened for South Australia and Western Australia yet.
What the AFL has to do to become king
Whenever i think of international expansion i like to think of the board game Risk (http://www.boardgamecentral.com/games/risk.html). Whilst i dont want world domination for football, using this board game you can see very easily that it is much harder to grow and expand and take over the world (in the board game) by starting in europe, and asia. Australia is one of the worst places.
What the AFL has to do to become king
Exactly. Thats why i support international expansion. People saying that international expansion will not work by using NSW as an example are clearly very misinformed.
What the AFL has to do to become king
I half agree.
I completely agree that less teams are needed.
But i have noticed a genuine shift in the younger generations towards AFL.
I wouldnt mind a Grand Final in Sydney if there was a big enough stadium, it would remove the victorian centricism.
What the AFL has to do to become king
Bigfooty is so full of random soccer fans so fearful that their hyped up game will fail its ridiculous. I dont know any soccer site which has that many football supporters on it.
What the AFL has to do to become king
26 players, 80 minutes possible on the bench. means an average possible time of only 12 minutes.
Or 3 minutes a quarter.
You can obviously not have everyone on the bench at once, hence some players will get that rest in the last bit of the quarter.
Still, i n the interchanges prove that football requires a much higher level of endurance than any soccer player.
What the AFL has to do to become king
I would love to see you run out just one quarter of football…. be hilarious.
What the AFL has to do to become king
Im pretty sure i read more newspapers than anyone on here. International and Australian.
Yes i do know that there are a lot of good things about FIFA (ie its work helping poverty and disadvantaged persons). This article is simply pointing out one thing has not been discussed at length on this site yet.
