Oh dear.. 17.16 Million Aussies just watched the Matilda’s play.
The Wednesday before 11.15 Million Aussies watched the Matilda’s play.

Pssst Brett… I’ve got a secret for you, half of them watch Football every week here in Australia.

But whatever you do Brett, do NOT admit this to anyone!

Keep it to yourself Brett, because believe it or not, there are still some dinosaurs out there that still think the only way you can watch sport is on free-to -air tv. ))

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naïve

Haha… you can try to spin it as much as you like and try to belittle it as much as you can, I think Australian Sports fans can all understand your frustration.

So here are the hard facts to reassure you –

Ausplay is funded and led by the Australian Sports Commission

Ausplay is the single-source participation data currency for Government and the sports sector

Ausplay helps the sport sector better understand the participation landscape and identify strategies to grow participation

2023 Ausplay data shows that more Aussies are out there playing and watching Football than any of the other codes and by a substantial margin

2023 Ausplay data in fact shows that there are twice as many Aussies playing and watching Football than any of the other codes, including the aus rules code

2023 Ausplay data shows that Football in the last 12 months has grown at a faster rate than it did in the previous 6 years

If you find that you are still having some difficulty coping with the Ausplay data from the Australian Sports Commission, I don’t know, maybe try sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming.

I’m loving your attitude change Brett, it is all the evidence that Football fans need.

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naïve

Yeah, it certainly gives Football fans a good belly laugh watching some constantly try to constrain and define Australian Football as just this bit or just that bit Brett.

It’s true that Football here in Australia is more than twice the size of all the other codes. But Australian Football is so much more than just our more than 2 Million participants or just our ALM or ALW competitions here in Oz.

You only have to look at our Matilda’s performances in this Women’s Football World Cup to see that. A 4th place finish from 211 competing countries was an impressive and inspiring performance for our rising crop of stars around the country.

But Football is much more than that, our leading male and female footballers are playing their football professionally right across the world. You saw plenty of their teammates playing in the Qtr, Semi and Final games of this WC. Aussies watch them play in the Women’s Super League on Optus Sport each week.

Our Socceroos are playing in England, Germany Scotland, US, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, South Korea, Japan and China. Ange is coaching one of the top 10 richest football clubs in the world Tottenham Hotspurs FC. Kevin Muscat is coaching FC Yokohama in Japan.

Aussies are watching more Football than any of the other codes every week.

Your attitude has clearly changed Brett. That’s understandable.

Research has shown 17.16 M Aussies watched the Matilda’s v England WC Semi, to suggest that attitudes have not been changed suggests an air of denial and desperation.

The Matilda’s have not only changed attitudes but they have changed the face of Australian sport, for the better. You only had to look at the demographic of the crowds at Brisbane Stadium and Stadium Australia to see it.

This Women’s Football World Cup gave Aussies a respite from the constantly over-aggressive, over-hyped, mind-numbing, violence-riddled Collision codes of rugby league and aus rules. It was a breath of fresh air from their all-intrusive dependency on gambling advertisements.

Attitudes have been changed forever Brett, you just cannot see it.

Have to agree. Been there, done that.

Any player payments to footballers is negligible when compared to the running costs for a football club contributing to the health, mental health and well-being of 1 000 or so members of their community.

The latest April 2023 Ausplay data shows that Football is more than twice the size of Netball.

That number is anticipated to increase by another 20% over the next 12 months.

Much of this funding is for additional female facilities to upgrade Football facilities for the stated Football Australia and Fifa goal of having 50/50 female and male participation rates in Football by 2027.

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naïve

I can help you with the full numbers… according to the April 2023 Ausplay data – Football now has more than 2 Million participants, which is more than twice the size of all the other code’s, including the aus rules code.

The latest Ausplay data also reveals that the number of Aussies playing Football in Australia has increased in the last 12 months – by the biggest margin in the last 6 years.

The 2023 Women’s Football World Cup has just shown that Australia really is a footballing nation, with more Aussies not only playing more Football than any of the other codes, but also now watching more Football than any of the other codes.

Many are anticipating a 20% increase in the number of Aussies playing Football over the next 12 months. After a decade of underfunding, Football deserves an increase in per capita funding to bring it back into line with the other codes. It is clear that funding is now needed more urgently than ever before.

Or more accurately, the not so much mass participation sports.

Would love to see the Matilda’s win tonight v Sweden in the 3/4 playoff, but regardless of the result, Tony G is exactly the Matilda’s Coach Australian Football needs.

Former US Women’s National team coach, a 2-time WC winner with Tony G as her Asst coach, has already said that people are underestimating Tony’s achievements with the Matilda’s in this WC. Pointing out it was done without one of, if not the best striker in the world.

Sam herself, on the back of just 2/3 training sessions gave us a glimpse of her quality with that stunning goal in the semi against England.

He has just taken Australia to our bestWC finish and in the process helped to elevate Football to the highest level in Australian sport by not just breaking, but literally smashing long-held TV Ratings previously held only by male sports.

He has set a pathway for our future Matilda stars where they can earn more money than our male sportsmen. Tony G is exactly the Australian Football Coach we need.

The jury is still out on Tony G despite Matildas' thrilling run - will he be remembered as fondly as Aussie Guus?

The predictable jumping on the bandwagon for Govt funding from the other codes has been even more embarrassing.

If you get the chance take a look at the Matilda’s: The World at our feet doco on Disney+.

I doubt anyone could not like or appreciate what Tony Gustavsson has done for this team or Australian Football in general. It gives an amazing behind the scenes insight into the preparation of the Matilda’s for the biggest single sporting Tournament ever seen in Australia.

In my view Tony G is a legend.

Still some more Attendance and TV Ratings Records to break in the Women’s Football World Cup yet.

Go the Matilda’s v Sweden.

As I said, 11.15 M Aussies watched the Matilda’s v England semi-final smashing every long-standing Australian TV Ratings record.

No other figures are available as far as I can see, so my best estimate would be 5-6 M Aussies as part of a worldwide audience of half a Billion or so. (Note – this could be way higher due to the staggering success of this Women’s Football World Cup that has broken Attendance Records, Ticket sales Records and TV Ratings Records)

Australia, do we want active football fans, or not?

Yeah.. 11.15 M Aussies watched the Matilda’s smashing every Australian TV Ratings record.

Not sure how many watched the other semi. As for the Women’s Football World Cup Final, I know Football Australia were anticipating an audience of over 2 Billion viewers worldwide.

Go the Matilda’s tomorrow v Sweden.

Australia, do we want active football fans, or not?

Aussies tuned in to watch the Women’s Football World Cup.

The biggest single sporting Tournament we have ever seen in Australia. Last Saturday night 8.13 M Football fans watched and supported the Tillies.

Then was it 3 or 4 days later, who knew, 11.15 M Football fans supported the Tillies.
