Thanks eagleJack. Saw a photo in a newspaper last week of Kurtley in his swimmers and have never seen him look trimmer. Hope his head is also in the right place and he has a terrific season.

Waratahs lose Foley to shoulder injury

Nic Stirzaka is Rebel’s captain. Scott Higginbotham has moved on to greener pastures.

The Australian Super Rugby teams’ chances in 2016

Haven’t caught up on anything on this game other than this article. Presumably David Horwitz will be the replacement but I’ve also heard that Bryce Hegarty is back from Japan and in the mix. Anyone know how this pair are shaping up?

Waratahs lose Foley to shoulder injury

TWAS, without getting into a drawn out discussion the money is not there because it is being spent elsewhere. Peter K is correct when noting that I believe too much is being spent at the elite level (which does not include Shute Shield clubs) and not at grassroots, which to me, does include District clubs.

Bob Dwyer lays the boot into the ARU over Sydney club rugby

This seems to be developing into a Subbies v District battlefield. Speaking only from a Sydney perspective it will indeed be a sad day if the Shute Shield were to be incorporated into Suburban rugby. I speak from an unbiased position. I played both Subbies and District rugby, was Secretary of Sydney Sub-district for a period, have coached local juniors, a subbies side, a District Under 17’s rep side and currently have one son playing Subbies and one playing Shute Shield. I often catch snippets of the local juniors games, watch a few subbies games a season and a lot of Shute Shield games.
Sydney needs both and both need financial and moral support from the ARU. Subbies is the heart and soul of Sydney rugby. It’s where blokes who love to pull on a jersey can tear into each other on a Saturday afternoon knowing that they are never going to achieve any level of renown at the game, but enjoying rugby for rugby’s sake. If you love rugby you’ve got to love Subbies. Any bloke playing Subbies who shows considerable talent has, in my experience, always been encouraged by his club to “have a crack” at grade. And rightly so. Good players should try to play as high a level as they can. Shute Shield offers this opportunity and is the only way for a player who has for whatever reason slipped through the junior rep and academy process (dare I say that he didn’t attend a private school perhaps?), to strut is stuff in front of a wider rugby audience. There is no question that Shute Shield players by and large are exposed to better coaching and higher skill and fitness development than Subbies players. Surely this is a good thing for those wishing to further their improvement in the game. Obviously this involves considerable cost to the club and should be supported by the ARU or NSWRU. Also I have no problem with 1st grade players being rewarded for their efforts by being paid a couple of hundred bucks a game. Clubs that hand out thousands to a select few and suffer financial problems as a result are simply being irresponsible and deserve to suffer the consequences.
Put simply, Sydney needs both Subbies and Shute Shield rugby and money needs to be found for both structures of the game. Of course there is never enough to go around (perhaps too much is being spent at the elite level) but they are both essential and should be recognised as such and supported.

Don’t like it but how can you police it? The guy shouldn’t be there – automatic penalty if he interferes with play. It has become part of every decent half back’s book of tricks of which Aaron Smith is the master.

Stripping should be a yellow card penalty

Surely taking the ref out of the game is at least a yellow.

Owens to referee World Cup decider

The inevitable musical shame for the Rugby World Cup final

Thankyou kind sir

Rugby World Cup: The dream final we weren’t entirely confident of getting

Thanks for the article Brett. Can you or anyone else (where are you Peter K) tell me what happens in the event of a draw at full-time. Presumably extra time, then what?

Rugby World Cup: The dream final we weren’t entirely confident of getting

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all migrants to Australia had your attitude. By the way Fitzsimons ego is big enough without including him in that illustrious group.

SPIRO: Game on! Wallabies or All Blacks to take permanent possession of 'Bill'

David, David David – surely you are not serious. I’m not going to pick your ratings apart one by one but let me just say that if you had the true numbers on your comparisons NZ would come out way in front. Being the rugby benchmark for more than a decade you’d expect that. Thankfully it’s only the scoreboard that decides the result.

All Blacks or Wallabies for a record third Rugby World Cup?

Really makes you wonder about the rugby nous of those who chose man of match v Argentina.

All Blacks need to keep Pocock on the ground

I haven’t seen the replay and can’t recall if it was contested but the not straight law applies regardless. I’d like to see it changed but it hasn’t been for RWC. Yes it was Kepu who was penalised but if he’s offended where the penalty was given then I’m going blind. There certainly were some dodgy decisions.

Defence is the word for the four-try Wallabies

Sure we have to accept referees calls be they right or wrong but the ref could have an absolute shocker and in doing so determine the result. I hope and expect Owens to have a good game in which case there will be no complaints. If he makes a couple of howlers that change the result I won’t be happy – unless of course Oz win!

World Cup wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies the right final

I have no problem with that yellow card. There appeared no attempt to use arms and the tackle could even be regarded as dangerous. Many many worse YCs handed out this RWC.
One decision that I haven’t seen mentioned was the penalty 30 metres out in front of the sticks that got Argies within 7 I think. Firstly it came after a blatant “not straight” Argies line-out and secondly didn’t seem to be awarded anywhere near where the infringement (if there was one) occurred. And what about Simmons being pinged for attacking the line-out jumper in the air. How soft, or probably just wrong, was that one.
Not to worry, we won and live to fight another day!

Defence is the word for the four-try Wallabies

Allanthus, I like your rope-a-dope analogy. Meyer cops a huge amount of criticism, much of it deserved, but if it was he that came up with this defensive strategy then I take my hat off to him. I, along with most I imagine, expected the boks to adopt a rush, perhaps umbrella defensive pattern, turning the ABs back inside where their monster pack could smash them. The ABs have faced this style of defence regularly, particularly since Samoa made them look rather pedestrian earlier in the year. As you would expect, they have adjusted. A player sneaking in behind the rush defence, a half break and offload etc, the paddock opens up and no-one exploits this better than the ABs. The sit and wait, keep the line straight pattern adopted, worked brilliantly. To use another tennis analogy it was like slice returning a power hitters bombs, taking all the pace off and making him hit even harder in an attempt to penetrate.
In fact one of the most interesting aspects of this RWC to me has been observing the changing defensive patterns adopted by many teams depending on who they’re up against. This was just one of many well thought out defensive surprises that coaches have employed – Wales holding Wallaby players up off the ground to force the maul turnover was an example of another.
As for the rest of the Boks tactics there were no surprises and it would have been a shame to see such a negative game plan rewarded with victory..

World Cup wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies the right final

I actually thought he should have made that last conversion 5 or 10 metres easier than he did.

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over Argentina

If he’s fit he will start if he’s not he shouldn’t be on the bench. Hasn’t Horne got a shoulder problem?

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over Argentina

Surely spot on the field is significant in whether it was the right option or not. I mean a penalty goal would have been nice too but if you were to take a shot from your own 22 obviously it’s a wrong option. IMO Foley’s FG attempt was a bad option.

SPIRO: Joubert has been dudded by World Rugby for correct call

The aim has always been to bring back Bill. Cheik forfeited our chance to win the Bledisloe at Eden Park because he was still tweeking things with the World Cup the ultimate prize. Call it disrespect if you like but IMO Pockock and Folau MUST be rested, plus others. Of course we have to win this one to win the final, but to win the final we will need our best side fully fit come final night. Resting players is a risk but a risk worth taking. Personally I wouldn’t have a problem having our “best” starters that need a rest being chosen on the bench and let them stay there if the game is under control.

Selecting the best team for World Cup success

I’m with you Brett.

Wallabies win a triumph of guts, determination, and plenty of luck

So much tension interspersed with the comic relief of Biggar’s goal kicking preliminaries. From the edge of my seat to rolling around the floor laughing then back to the edge of the seat. Not the greatest exhibition of rugby but what a great game to watch. Amongst many defensive moments I loved McMahon’s crunch on Biggar. Also Foley’s covering tackle, tidied up by McCalman, in which Foley could have been excused had he not even laid a finger on his man. And of course “that ten minutes” will long remain in my memory.
