Where is the cut off along the sideline between a play the ball and a penalty when kicking off/drop outs?
Last night, Ponga kicked 2 kickoffs out on the full that both went the required 10m (one only just, one 5m out from the goal line). The longer kick resulted in a penalty at halfway, the short one was a play the ball.
Does it come down to referee discretion whether they believe the player was attempting a short kick or not?

NRL's kick restart rule helps bring back another genuine contest but what about scrums, it isn't fair

The Vegas games will saturate the NSW and QLD media, not only on that weekend, but also during the weeks leading up to it. A couple of AFL games in NSW and QLD at the same time might get a tiny mention at the end of the sports report, or a small article in the paper tucked away near the classifieds section…

AFL reveals new concept to kickstart 2024 season, with focus on NSW and Queensland

No they are going to Vegas because they are able to…

So in other words they’ve just copied the NRL’s idea of having a “Round 0”, the only difference being that the games are in Australia instead of Las Vegas.

Like they say, imitation is the biggest form of flattery…

I don’t understand why Aus v NZ in the men’s game wasn’t the series opener. Yes Samoa made the WC Final last year, but with the squad available to them now they were always going to struggle. Now we are left with a dead rubber Test Match with both teams resting players before they play each other again next week in the Final.
Seems like a waste of an opportunity where we could’ve had Samoa play this weekend, playing for a spot in the final.

Pongs and Walsh yes, but not Edwards, he’s a poor man’s Tedesco at best. Looks good in the Panthers team but like the Storm often do, they make players look a lot better than they actually are…

I think Eddie is onto something. If Rugby was more like Rugby League it might actually be watchable…

SPIRO ZAVOS: Eddie Jones' coaching flaw is his belief that rugby is the same game as league

You said his shoulders hit before his rear end, this is absolutely false.
Go back and look at the vision again, his lower back is what first makes contact with the ground, and you’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise…

Except that he landed on his lower back, he never went past the horizontal.
I’m sorry, but you can’t get a penalty just because a tackle hurt the player…

Why do you assume I’ve come here with an agenda?
What you have said actually backs up my comments. Call it a “defensive struggle” instead of pulsating (unless you actually think it was pulsating?).

The crowd was a great advertisement for women’s football, showing it on a main free to air channel was a great advertisement for women’s football, but the actual action on the pitch for this particular game wasn’t, why is it so taboo to say that?

The Women's World Cup will succeed in spite of mainstream media, not because of it

The main problem with journalism of the women’s game (or any women’s sport for that matter), is the inability of any journalist (that I’ve seen) to call a bad game a bad game, or be critical of performances.
The match against Ireland was a poor standard, and Australia didn’t even look like scoring in general play.
Reports like the one from Martin Gabor calling the game a “pulsating 1-0 win” and stating that “Steph Catley slotted a penalty to dethrone John Aloisi for the most famous 12 yard shot that he held for 18 years” does absolutely nothing to help the women’s game and actually borders on being condescending towards them.
Call a spade a spade, if the game is a stinker, report it that way…

I’m an NRL fan, but at the same time love watching AFL. Some of your points are valid Tim, however one thing you have failed to mention is that NRL is better to watch on TV, whilst AFL is better to watch live at the ground, this is reflected by the bigger AFL crowds and the larger NRL TV/streaming audience (your example about the AFL GF is an outlier, look at week to week games).
Furthermore, with the TV deals, you would expect the AFL, with it’s longer game times and more chances for advertisements, to have a bigger TV deal, it gives the broadcasters more of an opportunity to get money back on their investment.

Footy race: Well-run AFL is miles ahead of lumbering NRL - and here are six reasons why

The problem with the what happened during the last Test was it went up as a soft out, but the third umpire overturned the decision despite the evidence not being conclusive. At no stage could he see the ball hitting the ground, he was just guessing.

Such a great match and they decide it on penalties? What a crappy way to decide the title.
They should’ve gone into golden goal after extra time…

The Greatest Final: Argentina win World Cup on penalties after Messi & Mbappe combine for thriller

At an elite level, maybe so. But at an entry/beginners level, which is where new people get introduced to the game, it is by far the least technical. To play it at a very basic or entry level, you can get away with only needing to know how to kick a ball (and even then you don’t need great technique to be able to enjoy it).

What is Australia's most popular sport?

Passing, tackling, playing the ball are all more technical skills to learn than just kicking a ball…

What is Australia's most popular sport?

You can get away with only needing 3 fundamental skills, kick, run and catch (for keepers) to be able to play soccer at a basic level.
If you had a group of kids who had never played soccer, AFL or Rugby League, and you explained the basics of the game to them and then got them to attempt to play each of the sports, which one do you think would most closely resemble the actual sport?
Like I said before, it’s not an attack on soccer, it’s just a way to explain why soccer can be so popular. You need a certain type of mentality to play a sport with as much contact as AFL or League. Some people aren’t wired like that, so a sport like soccer becomes an option for them, so they get in at an entry level and discover a love and passion for it.

What is Australia's most popular sport?

I’m not trying to have a crack at soccer with my comment, it’s actually a positive. AFL and Rugby League have a lot more technical rules and skills, and while I’m not suggesting that people playing soccer should have the skills of Messi, it is a lot easier to kick a ball around and therefore a lot more appealing to more people, especially for people who have no background in either sport.

What is Australia's most popular sport?

The reason soccer is so popular worldwide is because it’s the most simple game and the easiest game to play…

Obviously the EPL is light years ahead of the NRL in pretty much every category, but you can compare them as they are both the premier competition of each code…
